View Full Version : DIY: Floating Hood?

Unknownally

How do you customize your hood to "float?"

I know they sell universal kits for alot of money but damn too pricey.
Is there a way to do it without an expensive kit or pricey labor?

Floating Hood - the hood is slightly lifted from the back but the front stays snug. This causes a slanted look.

uneekazn1 (http://www.ephatch.com/forum/member.php?u=6252) has done it.

Thank you and good night!

yeah its to let out hot air... all i did to mine was pull the rubber seal. The gap is plenty big to escape the hot ait out especialy when the car is moving and fresh air is coming from the front

Hood Spacer Bushings. Yea, from what I've heard, it's used to add space under the hood for a swapped motor or for heat relief. But this is usually, from what I've seen, the older EGs and such. Also, usually a turbo is involved, but yea.

IMO, it doesn't look as clean or "floating", but that's just me. And yea, they sell a "kit" for this, but its just a few oversized washers.

Here's a couple pics:

Good thinking. That could be very true unless it was barely lifted.

Not sure if this is bullshit but someone once told me that in Nascar, I think it was a Dodge or some shit, they added vents above the fenders and it improved cooling dramatically.

If that works, this works.

If you spend more the $3 on this mod your a dumb ass. Go to auto zone and get 4 spacers and 4 longer bolts.

This mod will help keep the engine bay cooler

I tried it the corners of the hood will scrape on your fenders every time you open or close your hood taking paint off both. If I used smaller spacers it might have cleared but you would have no gap and defeat the purpose of venting the hood.

So I recomend not doing this mod on the ep.

That's why EG's and EK's go after it... They already usually have seen 100,000+ miles and "broken" is what they look like already, lol. But that's not to say those cars off the lot didn't look something fierce. The EG, IMO, is the sexiest Civic ever built.

Twisted-X

I've heard that this mod doesn't cause hardly any paint scrape issues with aftermarket hoods, but then again most AM hoods come with some kind of vent anyways...

Exactly! Joe(Jpax) has his FIT hood spaced like an inch + or so and it works well for the supercharger heat and looks sweet with the carbon hood all jacked up :mcool:. he used some nice large spacers similar to to the other posted ones. I tried to use them and almost smashed my fenders also :meek: . the hinges are different styles(the way they pivot) is the reason I think it doesn't work on the ep. Sucked cause I would have done it quicklike, anything to cool it more:vtec:.

Nope, not just you.

Do you have overheating problems to begin with? If it's for looks then it just looks silly. I agree, it looks "broken."

Just the newest rice fad imho. If you have a huge turbo and need to vent heat that's one thing, but otherwise what's the point.

^ domestics have been using this for many years, its the entire idea behind a cowl hood, low to high air pressure areas at the front of the car

worked well getting rid of heat, the corsportusa ones work, but it still messes up the edge of the hood

blehhhh!!!! i hate the way those spaces look, makes you look like you've been in a wreck and didn't go to a decent body shop, i know it's supposed to vent heat better but i couldnt' stand looking at that esp if it was a daily driver. but to each his own i guess...

I know what it is and I know that's it's been around for a long time. My personal definition of rice is taking something that is functional in some cases and just doing it because it looks cool. Huge ass aluminum wings are functional on some cars, but that doesn't mean it belongs on a Kia with I/H/E.

Like I said, if you feel you need to do it for venting heat then go for it, but if you're just doing it for mad JDM factor then I still say it's rice.

My friend told me that the whole purpose of this is air goes in and hot air goes out.

Not exactly. That setup doesn't drop under hood temps any more than stock. A better, functional version that's R&D* tested would deliver a significant advantage over stock or "for looks only" mod.

Sure this may help during idling but thats it . If its just a look you like then go for it.

*Companies producing a exterior modification and are involved in a racing series you can count on the product is involved.

This is can be backed up by tests done by members of many other forums. Its due to air pressure pockets created interrupting the air pressure under the hood. (search these places for more info - supraforums, 240sxforums, rx7club, etc)
