taping front end

so i've seen people tape their bumpers with painters tape when auto xing or when going on long trips. is this ok to do? i'm going on a 300 mile trip and the last time i did it i got bugs and stuff on my car so this would be the cheaper alternative to a full bra. any input on whether i should do this or not?

yea, it should be fine... i taped up my front end a month after my paint job when i had to go back to school (approx. 300miles as well) and i even left it on for almost a week after i got up there.

but as long as it's not really strong... mine was the delicate surfaces one (could be left up to 60 days)

just taped my ep, i put "madd v-tak yo!!" on the driver's side door :mbiggrin:i might put more on before i leave.. and i got the delicate surface tape :mwink:

dude the best thing for the front of your car is a 3m clear bra you can barely see it and you can throw rocksa at it at 150 mph and it wont do a damn thing to the paint. I used to detail cars and the dude I worked with put them on. and plus the normal bras people put on actually are bad for your paint, it collects dust and dirt in between the car and the bra and when it get moister i there its even worse. I detailed a 2006 lexus with a standard bra on it and took it off to put wax on it and the paint was like a like a faded color.

It will protect the ride from road debris and bugs, but if left on in the sun for too long it will transfer the adhesive to the paint, it also looks very trashie to me.

Just go to any auto parts store and get some Dupli-Color spray-on clear bug shield. http://www.autobarn.net/duplicolor-spray-on-bra.html so now there is no big hassles removing it, a highpressure hose and or soap and water remove it, rain and snow do not affect the spray-on bra.

Has anyone thought to try Saran wrap? It's clear and it should stick fairly well...no? If not, only a few pieces of tape would be all it takes to secure it.

my car came with the 3m bra. my fender got hit, so the body shop removed it, once the bra was gone the paint peeled a few weeks later...

I've seen a lot of guys at the track tape up their new cars. It's always been RWD muscle cars though. They tape the rear 1/4 panels so that the rubber from staging comes right off. If anyone has ever tried removing track rubber they can appreciate it.

If you go through the trouble of taping the whole front end then why not take some kinda clear film to cover/protect the headlights?

hey, just got back.. it only took like a roll and a half.. the funny thing is that when i took the tape off, the car was all dusty in the places that didn't hae tape so i still have the "mad v-tak yo!!" on the side of my car in dust :mbiggrin:
