a 1989 SAAB 900 16v. this is by far the strangest and most entertaining car i have ever driven.

mother flippin' backwards! nevermind that its longitidunal and front wheel drive, that's somewhat common. but the transmission is up front! all the belts are against the firewall. to make it even weirder, the oilpan is the transmission itself. i'm not gonna question it. frickin these guys build fighter jets

i couldn't resist. it needed a new air filter anyway :tehehe:

its in very good condition. it only has 81000 original miles and was garage kept. the best part of it all, it was free! so i really can't complain. 2nd gear syncro is bad so i have to double-clutch like its a truck. lol.

it does have its quirks. the key ignition is in the center console behind the shifter. and i can't take the key out unless its in reverse. it has power door locks that operate with authority. and that same feature that old school volkswagens have that make it impossible for you to lock your keys inside the car. it has a funky shiftlight icon of the gearshift on the cluster. the glovebox and ashtray light up green, the cigarette lighter pops out of its socket to punish you, the temp for the climate control has one area for cold and the whole thing for hot. its got heated seats and zero cupholders. not bad for 1989.

i like it, my friends like it. it gets decent gas mileage and it corners flat :pump: but needs a tuneup for sure. too bad its not a turbo hatch. but since its for free, i really can't complain.

The greatest thing about Saabs is most parts such as alternator or power steering can be found on old GM vehicles in a junkyard. You can also borrow a FMIC from an old volvo and upgrade the turbo relatively easy.

Sweet find, dude. Take more pics of the interior. I find the interiors of older cars especially Saabs pretty neat.

That is an awesome free car. Old Saabs are cool as shit. Come to think of it. I kind of like new Saabs too.

saabs are strange....I always thought they were designed by people that had never really taken apart a car before...

lmao at the hood opening pics. i dig saabs though, volvos too. i dont think enough people consider them as viable alternatives to hondas and more mainstream european cars.

you're telling me. i was searching saab pics on flickr and the way this car is constructed is really something else. oh, and i hate how everything is torx.

parts for saabs are surprisingly not that expensive. a new water pump was $40. new cap and rotor doesn't even come out to $30

my mom's friend was moving out of her apartment, bought a new car, forgot she had the saab in the garage (its been that long) and my mom called dibs. funny how stuff works out sometimes.
