Yeah I ran into that issue too, I considered an 8W7 for my rig but stuck with the dayton due to depth issues and enclosure size.

A ton of your weight is in wood, there are plenty of high-performance, no-frills drivers out there that don't weigh too much. My enclosure weighs in at 24Lbs un-loaded.

has anyone heard of DD? (Digital Design) they make amazing subs. you could get a DD 8 inch. it would pound real hard with the right setup.

Like now i have all alpine

Ima be upgrading to this

http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/products/product.php?model=iDA-X100

I have a single type R. Def enough bass. I think I need a cap though because I can only turn the sub up to about 8 or 9 and then it all shuts off. BTW it goes up to 15 and let me tell you, 9 BUMPS! So 15 will def bump hard!

currently have a 10" L7 in a kicker ported box. It takes up about half the trunk but it's fairly loud with 800w.

these are hella expensive, hit hard, and very lightweight.

I've seen where folks get an 8 and put it in a cardboard tube used for forming concrete. even if you fiberglassed it, it still wouldn't weigh shit!

Check out elemental designs subs. I switched from dual 12"s to a single 13Ov.2 and love it. These guys make high quality, affordable stuff. Box is only 1cf too.
