Charles: on 215/40s w/ 17", do you feel the heavy bumps especially @ 40 mph? In your opinion, can it handle small dips or bumps @ 40 mph?

GTImortFan: on 55 series w/ a 3" drop, how noticable are the bumps?

Do you guys get any noises coming from them?

charles

I feel pretty much every bump. But i have hit so many pot holes since i had them on, and they are still holding up fine. They can take some abuse. I have some noise coming from the driver front side when making 3 point turns, but i think my tie-rod is bad since i ripped the boot during installation.

quite honestly.. the thing rides like stock for me.. even when i was dumped.. i had SHG Easy E drive my car and he was like" wow.. these are really 250?" .. the best way i can describe them is that they feel like stock suspension no matter the height.. and the only noise i had was break in noise..

i went with my friend to San Bernardino in his CD5 on Tein Flex coils last nite (i drive to San Bernardino daily for school) and the Racelands felt the same as the Teins.

I wonder if these can handle pothole-ridden Toronto roads and the occasional track day (1-2x/year). I just want to lower it 1". The car is otherwise stock.

Anyone have spring rates handy?

Tire Size: . . .205/40/17 (soon to be 215/40/17)

you really can't beat the price....$$$$ 240 dammmm... what do you even have to loose... even if they did bust every 3000miles... its only $$$240...
and just throwing it out there, ive heard numerous of bad stories about top end coilovers such as tien, eibach..not even going to mention ksport..blah... so really if you are on a budget..
i would say that would be the best bang for your buck $240 you can ever spend... coming in close 2nd is kpro for $950

some of you are saying that you're getting the "strut mount bearing" noises from wear. don't these come with a set of tophats? thats what it says on the website

GeeBo
03-31-2010, 06:47 AM
I saw that the website said they come with tophats also, but they don't show any in the pic. I just want to make sure if they come with them, because I think my bearings are crap. And if they do, are they any good?

03Si757
03-31-2010, 02:48 PM
I did not get top hats, I recall when I recieved mine, in the directions it states that you need to re-use the exhisting top hats, which in any case, you should buy new ones anyways. It does state that it comes with 2x top hats, but it does not, in the installation hints it states:

Installation hints:

Before you lower your ride height, find out if you are allowed to lower it in your state. The installation of the coil over kit is to be done only by a licensed mechanic.
We recommend that you spray light oil on the threaded part of the coil over kit to prevent seizing of the spring seats.
Do not use pneumatic tools.
The upper insulator mounting with bearing that came with the car must be used. Aftermarket upper insulator mounts may not properly fit the Raceland coil over kit.
After you have installed the Raceland coil over kit, test it by driving it slowly and retighten all bolts to the specified torque value.
After the proper height has been determined, have your car professionally aligned.

i caved in and bought it today after so many positive remarks on raceland's customer service.

What else is recommended with this kit?
I am considering buying two new front suspension mounts (tophats/bearings).
At 1.5" drop, I probably need a rear camber kit? Will I need a roll center adjustment lower ball joint? Anything to prevent further noise from my steering rack?

I have a small update for you guys . . . not a very good one. I blew the rear coilovers driving on the 101. Let's just say everything is clunking, squeaking and grinding; it doesn't absorb any bumps as of right now, but I have yet to remove them to check them out (going 70 and hitting a pot hole/bump is not a good idea LOL).

alright i honestly feel like im about to get ripped apart for asking this.. but i have a question. you need to reuse the stock top hat because its not included with the racelands, as it is with means and such, so why do you not need a spring compressor? how will i remove the center bolt to free the spring and top hat with out a spring compressor? the shock will just spin when the bolt is turned. should that bolt be taken off before the three top hat bolts, and when the springs are under full load? i want to get everything straight so i can do this tomorrow. the racelands are sitting on my floor, along with my set of megans (one needs new lower mounts fabricated and a new pillowball mount)

krylonking
04-06-2010, 08:28 PM
The suspension is really not under that much pressure i used a spring compressor and i had to remove the compressor to get the shock out. When you go back with them on the racelands i just got the nuts started on the coilovers and put them on then tightend the strut all the way down. I was using a impact though so i know i will be a lot harder by hand.

hotwired_78
04-06-2010, 08:56 PM
if you must, just use a c-clamp

so take that bolt off before i jack the car up? i dont see how its possible without a spring compressor. the bolt would turn and the should cyl would just turn with it.

04-07-2010, 07:20 PM
Dude, get an allen wrench that fits into the head to hold the shaft from spinning, then use the close end of a wrench (it was either 17mm or 19mm or smaller I don't remember) and remove the nut that holds the top in place. Don't worry, the spring won't really pounce at you like the old Honda suspensions. If you are scared that it will pounce at you, loosen the nut until it gets close to coming off, then use a socket wrench that has a long handle (so you can get some distance from the spring), make sure the spring is pointed away from people and objects that it may harm, step on the bottom portion of the strut and loosen until the nut comes off.

Helped a member install a set of these last night. The rde and the quality where much higher than i expected for $200. The ride quality was even to my Mugen SS and the handling seemed a tad better or similar to my Mugen SS. You will reuse the top hat and the bearings as pictured below. They will fit perfectly within the spring and spacer piece Raceland provides.

hey everyone,

I have been following these coilovers for quite a while now and am considering switching my setup for these for one reason: to go a little bit lower. Currently i am on H&R race springs (yellow ones) with Tokico Dpec shocks. I am in debate if this would be a downgrade because it seems that the raceland shocks are giving everyone a pleasant ride, whereas my ride is a little bit more bumpy even though las vegas doesn't have much bumpy roads. IN your opinion, yay or nay on switching out suspension setups?

MODS: please let me know if i posted in the wrong thread. i figured this would be relevant enough to post here.

Thanks,
Myles

yeah.. i used my setup for a year but i think i want something a little more comfortable.. new setup is koni yellows on H&r springs.. much softer than the racelands.. and to be honest the car doesnt handle as good any more.. but the cruising is better.. if i ever get another car, i might throw the racelands on again

What is the minimum drop on these? around 1 inch?

Do they ride more comfortable if adjusted to minimum drop?

let me get this straight, the koni yellows/H&Rs are softer making it handle less or are you talking about the Racelands? becasue i was thinking of getting Racelands for a bit and save up for better coils in the long run for an easy quikc fix off of my stock shocks and H&Rs

You really can't beat these for the price. After installing them on 2004EP3HATCH's car and checking out the quality with a friend of mine who does all of the mechanical work at www.rjcars.com Mopar restoration shop (call the shop and ask for Justin if you want his unbiased opinon), we both agreed that you can't beat them for the price.

That said, 2004EP3HATCH spoke with a Raceland rep on the phone who said, "I DO NOT recommend these for autoX or racing, just street driving."

But, one of you could always get some Swift springs and try them out....

just go get an alignment.. you probably have nearings of over 5 degrees toe out. I didn't experience too much camber on the front, but the rear ended up with about -1.5 maybe -2 after alignment. fronts are at 0. somehow I'm fitting 225s on 17x7.5 +40 and only rub on really hard turns

from a handling perspective.. the racelands are alot better than the koni setup.. .. but for what i want right now.. the racelands are a bit too stiff.. so i got koni's with HnR's for 350 the whole set.. used for only like 3 months.. and im retiring the racelands.. they are fucking awesome and i would always recommend em for a good one year period setup type thing.. but after about 20k miles i have 1 blown strut and i didnt wanna buy a whole new setup.. so i just got the konis.. softer ride and also wasnt too expensive

did anyone have problems with these being extremely small? They are like 3 inches shorter than stock struts. I expected them to be a little smaller. but like, at the highest setting i can barely fit the wheel on with like 92375 degrees of neg camber. having major problems in the front of these. Its like i dont have enough shock travel

they are suppose to be shorter than stock both front and rear.. once u get them on ur gonna have to do a lil self alignment with the wheels.. just enough to get u to an alignment shop.. i dont see why u got bad camber .. its the toe that should get fucked up.. post a pic of the issues ur having..

You'll have to get a raised steering arm bracket from this guy from CLUBrsx if youre trying to go 3 inches. Im dropped 3 inches all around and I had horrible bump steer without the raised steering arm bracket. If anything knows how to mod the coils to go lower. The guys username is 0857. He's from Walnut, CA. He quoted me $120pickup and $130shipped anywhere if I remember right. He kinda lags on response nowadays from what my friend tells me because hes been busy. But when you place an order he ships it right away. Hes on point when shipping items. I dont really have any good pictures of it slammed all the way in the front.

Im only tucking the threads of the tire. my fender is exactly on the line where sidewall and thread seperates. I have about half an inch left in the rear and Im tucking 1/4 sidewall. I'll try to snap a shot when I drive today.

Slammed on racelands in front and I have about half an inch left in the rear. Rear tucks more than front but its an even drop. I had these since August 2009. I put around 10k+ miles since then. When I installed my suspension, I bought new top hat bearings, and new bolts (#9 and #13 in the pic, respectively), but ended up not needing them. I also bought the bolts for the rear shock and did end up using them. The ones I pulled out were rusted and the threads were rough. I would also recommend tie rod ends, or at least the rubber boots for them (neither are shown in this illustration); I completely destroyed the boot on one of them and the bearing inside was shot as well.

Then you'll probably hate the H&R/Tokico setup then. Stiffer spring rates. 30% stiffer than stock. Even when slammed on these, I still think my H&R/Tokico was a stiffer setup. Mosdef handles better. It made my car more tail happy than the Racelands...even when I raised it back to 2inches for the ride to SoCal.

EpThreeD
06-21-2010, 12:20 PM
Dont you need stiffer rates? Because when you lower it you lose a lot of suspension travel and a lot of the cheap coilovers just bottom out and hit the bumpstops right?

been on these for 3000 miles now. still ride great. just clunking and popping noises coming from the front right side during turning of the wheel at a stop or hard turns. Top hats were replaced with new ones as well. Another issue is on hard turns, i hear scraping... sounds..... =/

other than that, the ride is good.

i actually did. When i first got mine on, i was hearing noises from the passenger front strut and thought i was a faulty strut. So i told raceland about the problem and they sent a replacement strut right over after some troubleshooting to try to fix the problem. It turns out it was my fault, a loose bolt was to blame for the noise. So i have a spare front strut in my room because i got lazy to send it back. But raceland values their warranty

It turns out it was my fault, a loose bolt was to blame for the noise. So i have a spare front strut in my room because i got lazy to send it back. But raceland values their warranty

How do they know youre still under warranty? Because I threw aways my box and receipt...

So I just ordered mine last night :) After looking around at other coilovers at a much higher price, I decided to just give theses a try. I found some Progress coils that were $900, but $300 fit the bill. Besides, for a DD this spring set up doesn't seem all that bad either. 310 front 417 rear. A little soft, but compaired to the 340/650 of progress' more 'performance' springs, this should do just fine for me. Can't wait to get them!

For the most part, the only thing is is comes with 2 sets of top hat spacers to hold the spring and top at in the front. Bot front at rear use the factory top hats and went in pretty smooth. Still mad about my lower ring getting stuck so kinda stuck at slammed status. Still think its too soft but its pretty nice.

so true. There is always the raised steering arm bracket to help relieve some stress off the rack. Im planning on picking one up soon. So with raceland, or basically anything that you would want to excessively lower your car with, get the raised bracket. Other than that they are cool. Whether you dump your car on cheap raceland or expensive suspension, your car will still probably handle like shit. Minus well cheap out and handle like shit for less money. I know the durability factor of these coilovers was a big issue when no one had them, but i had them for a year, daily driven, and i have had no structural problems.

mine does that as well, i really don't like them but i don't need coilovers for any performance enhancing aspects yet so i'd rather destroy these 210 dollar coilovers from being 2 inches off the ground and then get something legitimate when im not broke and maybe get bored of the 'stance' movement.

Having my first real problem with them right now, i autoxed these a few times, they held up...but were noisy as hell. I took it pu in the air yesterday at the shop. found that the collar nut that holds the shock cartridge in actually is coming loose. It knocks like all hell on bumps and when i turn the wheel. If you guys want me to do a diy i will, i am halfway through it right now, just thought id ask if anyone wants pics. lmk!

About maybe 1,000 miles on my setup, little bouncy might buy some eibach coilover springs that are stiffer, but got me low and i still can go lower.

Wow. I don't think I have ever seen such an overwhelmingly good response to any product. Especially one that is so cheap in price. I am actually looking for suspension since mine has 100k on the factory stuff. This sounds like an extremely good option.

I'm looking at autoxing again. It's been several years since I had my S13 and I'm loving the way this EP3 feels so I would imagine any improvement in the suspension would make it even better for autox. How long have you been autoxing on these coilovers?

All this year, ive put like 4 or 5 track days on, so probably like 15 or 16 runs. I think thats why ive had a little bit of noise coming from them. I fixed a major problem last night. Other than that they are quiet as a church mouse. Ill put up pics of how my car sits on them once im home.

I've had a clunk come up on my Racelands. I've had them on since April I believe? It's not super annoying, just sometimes when turning at lower speeds it will clunk, and then when the steering wheel returns to a neutral position it will "clunk back". I had a really good garage take a look and listen to it when I was having my Moog endlinks put on and he said it's somewhat normal of the design, and not a safety issue which is all I really care about.

It only happens at low speeds, if I'm going over 50 km/h I can't hear any clunking, etc.

I just ordered a set of these babies. I plan on only dropping 1" all around because based on what mustclimbe and zzxxxyy have said going any lower than that without some sort of lower control arm modification negatively affects handling on our cars. That being said with a 1" drop on these babies will I need to get a camber kit or do I just need to get an alignment done after the install?

You'll definately need both front and rear camber kits. The shop i took itto for the alignment could on get the rear to -3 degrees on the stock camber arms. The front is still about -2 degrees on the stock bolts.

Just another vouch for Raceland.

I've had mine on for about 3 months now, one of my front struts was making some strange noise...we removed my wheel and noticed the strut was moving. I emailed Raceland and they had a replacement shipped to me the same day, no questions asked. Now thats customer service. As if that wasnt good enough, this experience blew me away:

When first got my coils, my friends couldnt believe the pricing for the quality...My best friend has a 08 WRX wagon. He was bummed they didnt carry a set for his car at the time, i suggested that he contact Raceland.

He emailed them and they replied that they hoped to release a kit for his car by the end of the year. He thought "oh, cool..." and just forgot about it. Two days ago he received an email that the coilovers had released and he could purchase them. He immediately ordered them and got a call back from the owner of the company. The owner congratulated him on being the first person who ordered a new set and told him that the company was going to HAND DELIVER his package over night.(from Reno, NV to Milpitas, CA) 24 hours later, the marketing director showed up at my boys work with the coils, a shirt, hat, and other stuff...

I just thought i'd share this story..the company continues to impress me.

Now im off to lower my car some more..lol

What's your alignment specs if you don't mind me asking? I originally read that camber kits were not required, but my the shop said they couldn't adjust it anymore. I'm lowered about 2.75", so I'm not that low.

i didn't get a performance alignment. but i had 1.6 degrees of negative camber in the rear, but then i replaced my lca with skunk2 and it seems to have gone back to +-0. other then that everything was set to stock and i have even tire wear. i need to get another alignment soon though, im going with a different tire size and will be adjusting the height slightly so i may get an aggressive corner balance alignment even though my coilovers are garbage.

this question has already been answered more than 100 times in here
but here we go again:
with racelands u need the stock upper mount (top hat) on both front and rear as well as a set of stock bearings for upper end front strut.

Edith : No mood is necessary, if u r slamming , do some negative camber in rear OR roll ur fender and for front, i suggest u to get the 0879's bracket for ur steering

I got my overnight and installed them this past weekend...it was a easy as pie...I'm completely in love with my car again..I bought new outer tie rods and had sears align the car...the car feels so much nicer now and looks way better than when it was lowered on Skunk2 springs...the toe was out like crazy...couldn't even drive it out of the driveway...had to think fast and adjusted the toe myself...when I got to sears, surprisingly, the toes wasn't off too bad...I need a camber kit for proper tire wear but, for now, RACELAND is the thumbs up in my book! Buy it through Facebook, 5 percent off...Yea Mannn!!

Just a heads up for us Canadians wanting to buy these, the shipping costs ($50 via UPS) do not include brokerage fees. When UPS came to my place they wanted $83.13 in brokerage fees. I emailed Raceland regarding this and suggested they put this info on their website or include it in their shipping costs I got this in reply:

"Thank you for the suggestion, the website team will look into this shortly and will make our site and eBay ads provide this information before purchase.

Sincerely,
Raceland USA"

Even if they don't in the end I'm impressed at the quick response to the suggestion.

Yea...on my old skunk2 springs and stock struts, I bottomed out when I hit a little bump on the road and with the racelands..same road that I've traveled through for years everytime I would bottom out but on the the racelands...it was kewl...no bottoming out...my car feels more solid and hugs the road now...best bang for the buck as far as suspension wise....I was considering buying some tokico shocks and using my skunk2 springs but the tokico shocks were about $400 so I bought these instead..no regrets yet!!...plus raceland warranty's is two years...can't beat that!

it does. raceland even said that the introductory price was to rope customers in and get the name out there. but it could also be the lack of the honda community using them as opposed to the vw scene.

it's time for me to purchase some coilovers. i'm debating over these or rokkors. leaning towards racelands, since many members are already satisfied with them. any advice?

go raceland for their customer service

alright. i'm about to order these, but i remember they had a promo code. the one posted here is expired.. so before i order, anyone have a promo/coupon code? thankss.

EDIT: i just called, and the promo code are always the same, except they change the last 3 letters for the month. so instead of "RUFB5SEP" it's "RUFB5OCT." +1 for customer service. saved me $15.

i am strongly considering these but i want to know why are they so damn cheap??? they are a german company wtf. im so dazzled by the price and the warranty but i'd be scared to take my car hard around turns unless i truly know the quality

i do not believe they are german... as mine say..... made in china. however they could be based out of germany...

I just ordered these, so far everything looks good, kinda bothers me a little that the "Made in China" stickers are slapped everywhere but nonetheless they still look promising... I can't install them yet since it could snow any day now

I installed my Racelands on my daily EP today, and the perch is all the way down on all 4 corners. I must say it's not a bad ride for the price and how low it is. I wouldn't mind if the front could go lower. The tires are rubbing the liners a bit but hell, it's LOW. Just in case you're wondering...16x7 +40 225/45 BFG KDW2
I will have some better pics later. +1 for Raceland

Great coilovers, just cannot STAND the clunking on mine. Driving me insane, to the point where I want to get rid of these and put some Progress or Megans on.
