History - I bought this car used in Aug 06 with about 37k on the odo, Currently its got approx. 180k on the odo. It has been the most fun and reliable car I've ever owned. It's my DD, my auto-x racer, and my track day car.

Yeah, I run HP+ pads in the front and regular street pads in the back. I'm thinking about trying out some EBC Yellowtuff pads next time I do a track day.

I got the ITR header off of someone on clubrsx and needed to put some work into it. All of the gaskets are p/n's available in the US. The header and midpipe fit perfect, well because they are actually made for this platform. ;). I got the rsx-s mid pipe for 25 bucks on craigslist.

Two of the studs on the header were stripped, so i had to take them out (easier said than done) and re-tapped the threads that the studs came out of. I bought a couple of bolts, cut them to size and touched up the threads where i cut it. Then used those instead of studs.

Thanks for the love, and no prob. Ask away. It passed emissions with flying colors in california. I'm using an RSX-S primary O2 sensor and the ep3 secondary with an o2 extension. I was using the ep3 primary with an extension, but mine went bad. The RSX-S sensor doesn't need an extention, its the right length.

It basically a race header with a cat. I'm happy with it because it passes emissions. If I ever decide I want to delete the cat, spoon makes a catless 2-1 replacement piece that has no cat.

Been a while since I've done anything to my car, but I just got some new parts ordered.... RSX Hotchkis Camber Plates. Gonna use those to dial in as much negative camber as possible with the HFP suspension. Should be at least -1.5. Looking to pick up some more grip in turns. Also just got a set of Hankook Ventus V12 evo K110 in the 225/45-17 size, wider rubber = more grip. Also got a great deal on a LHD EDM CTR carpet... So that will be going in soon.

Ok, so change of plans. After reading that I need to take apart my HFP struts to install the camber plates (which I should have know already, lol) I decided I'm going to try out some crash bolts to get from front camber i want. I'll save the camber plates for when I get a set of Koni yellows and some ground control coil overs. I saved my OEM front struts just for that reason and I'd like to keep my HFP kit original as a backup.

Also looking to roll my rear fenders and dial out some of the negative camber from the HFP kit with the SPC adjustable control arms I picked up recently. I'll post my thoughts on the setup once i get it done and aligned... Should be by the next auto-x at the end of the month.

Made some progress over the weekend....
- Changed out the front lower support brace for the one off of the 05-06 RSX-S.... because its the same as the ITRs. Tube diameter is thicker and the part is pretty cheap. Hopefully it stiffens up the front end.
- Installed 05-06 RSX-X rear strut gussets because of the same reason above and installed the ITR rear strut bar that ties the gussets together.
- Installed SPC rear camber arms.

Man, if I ever meet the Honda Engineer that decided it was OK to make the top thermostat bolt impossible to reach with a socket..... Got-er done though. If anyone else does this make sure you get two gallons of coolant. The dumb ass at the parts counter told me I needed one. I read the coolant capacities again in the shop manual before I started and it needs 5.5 quarts (not 4), so I bought another gallon. Another fun fact, the fan switch needs a 24mm socket or wrench... make sure you have one of those.

If anyone is looking for a cost effective alternative to the Samco hoses I'd recommend the Gates hoses. They are not silicone, but they claim they perform better than the silicone hoses (http://www.gatesracing.com/hose.cfm), they are also blue in color and are way cheaper. Win, Win, Win... I got them for $28 bucks on Amazon (P/N: HK37RB).

I had already drained my coolant since it had to be replaced anyway, but yeah I can see how if you hadn't done that you've be covered in coolant.

The Neuspeed bar connects to the chassis behind the rear seats about half way up. I don't have any pictures of the back side right now, but you can look up the install instructions on their website for more detail. There is a 1 piece Mugen bar that does the same thing as the 3 piece Neuspeed bar.

it is pretty simple man. i bought extra door panels and did it on those, but i did it half assed and i'm looking forward to doing it again maybe a different fabric/color though. all you need is a drill and the DIY off of 8th gen. or better yet i have a friend that will do it probably for cheap

Got a set of race wheels finally. 16x7 +40 Rota Slipstreams. Super light. The guy I bought them off of told me they were +45, but when i mounted them up i noticed they stuck out a bit. Then i found the offset stamped on the inside. Doh! Well increased track width isn't bad for autocross, but I definitely have to get my rear fenders rolled now.

03civicdopejmd
08-31-2011, 06:07 AM
I wouldnt think you'd have to get the rear rolled for +40 offset.. seems like a waste of money, unless your going wider and bigger with the tires down the road.. I dont rub much with my 16x8+38 with 225/50's.. arent you on HFP's thats not much of a drop? A little negative camber in the rear will clear your fender...

I'm running 225/50-16's for auto-x and my goal is to have zero camber to -0.5 in the rear. I'll have to play with it, but I'd like to have no rubbing at all.

03civicdopejmd
08-31-2011, 08:45 AM
I honestly do think youll have any at all to begin with.. isnt hfp like a inch lower then stock? So in that case your rear camber wouldnt change much with just the drop... im also running the 225/50/16 direzza's which are more like 235's- and Im lowered to a finger gap. with negative 2.5-3 in the rear and hardly rub. you could also get some 215's and you wont rub at all!

My Fiance surprised me by getting me a new set of auto-x tires for my birthday. I've had a set of 16x7 +40 Rota Slips that I picked up used a few months back and hadn't had the money to pick up a set of tires yet, so this was a big surprise. I'm now very very very excited about this next auto-x season. Finally I'll get to race on some light weight wheels and sticky tires instead of the 06 Si boat anchors, I mean wheels.

Got my rear fenders rolled last weekend. Now I'll be able to get a proper alignment for auto-x. But first I need to tear down my suspension again a re-lube all the poly bushings. The squeaking makes it sound like my car sounds like it has a family of mice living in it. Thinking about replacing my tie-rod ends also just as a preventative maintenance.

Also on the to do list is to install my BCSS and my E.S.M.M. inserts.

Front right bearing took a shit on me and has been making an awful grinding noise. So decided it was time to give my car some love. Just picked her up from South Bay Honda. Had the clutch replaced and asked if they could replaced both wheel bearings at the same time since they had the knuckles off. They said no problem, bring in the parts and we'll do it at the same time for no extra charge. They also recommended replacing the rear main seal for the crankshaft since the transmission was off as preventative maintenance. These guys are really willing to work with you. Gave them my ESMM's to install since they were dropping the subframe anyway. They also re-lubed my front control arm poly bushings for no extra charge. Just had to supply the grease.

My car drives like new again. Clutch is really light, no suspension squeaks, and no grinding wheel bearing. WOOHOO!

Niice. how much did it cost all together?

I ordered all the parts from their website (www.hondapartscheap.com) so I got good pricing on those. The labor though was pretty hard to swallow, when i look at how much extra i squeezed in tough it isn't too bad. Just knowing its all OEM parts and that they right tools for the job gives me piece of mind. Labor cost was 1500 for the clutch job, rear main seal, esmm install, bushing lubing and bearing job were included for free. At least it came with a complimentary rental car and a free coffee and pastry from their cafe.

Yeah, I already have the DC5-S setup, spoon calipers would just be lighter and offer more even brake wear. It doesn't hurt that they look bad ass too, haha. I'll probably end up going for the kpro in the end. I was able to get a set of the dark silverish color CTR wheels. Not sure what the official color name is.

Got the brake lines done and the brake fluid exchanged. Was putting my wheels back on my car to wash it and found two nails in my tire. So decided to throw my auto-x wheels on for the time being and get my tire fixed. Ran out of time before the Superbowl for the wash and this morning the channel 2 weather guys says we have some rain foretasted for this week, so I'll be putting off the new pics until next Saturday.

As for the BCSS, I'll tackle that when I receive my new center console lid. From what I've read the BCSS easier to swap out if you take out the center console so I'll just kill two birds with one stone then.

Probably later this year. Since they dropped the price on the KPRO I think that will be my next upgrade. I'm also a little concerned that the koni's and the ground controls will be too harsh for a DD. I'll still get them, but it will probably not be during this auto-x season.

Just installed a set of JDM/EDM foglights last night (with the help of a USDM foglight kit for all the wiring) and it looks great. I also installed a new 04-05 Si grill and put the SiR badge back on the front. Ordered a new Red H as well. The new fogs and grill totally refreshes the look of the car. Now I just need to tackle those nasty hazy headlights. I'll buff them out one more time, but I really want to get a set of LHD EDM Type-R headlights, then I can officially call the exterior complete.

Weekend update - Since the fog light install I've been missing my sub and XM tuner. I had a 4 AWG power cable going through the grommet for the fog light harness to a power block for years, now that the fogs were installed I had to find a new way to get that wire through. I drilled a new hole and installed a 4 awg grommet above the fog light grommet to run the power cable through. Now I'm back in business. Also the new front H came in so that installed also.

To Do list for the next micro project:

Buy a ton of new clips, I've been finding them missing or damaged during projects.
Buy new door trim pieces for the exterior
Buy new trunk struts
Buy a new driver side sun visor (original won't stay in place anymore)

so, last thursday one of the spark plugs shot out of the engine and the coil pack is not in 3 pieces. Looks like it went through WW3. Cracked my JDM spark plug cover. I cleaned up the mess and it looks like the threads are still in the block, just a little damaged. Picked up a tap and am just waiting for my new extended tap handle to get in there and hopefully clean the threads up. If that doesn't work I'll be installing a time-sert insert in there. If neither work I might be in the market for a new car while I pull the engine and build the bottom end look for a k20a2 head to rebuild.

Sad to hear that bro. What are your build plans? You doing a frank?

If I can't fix the head then I'll probably pull the engine and build the bottom end with a k20a2 crank and forged pistons. Top end will probably be a rebuild k20a2 head with a valve job and port and polish and some cams. Since I'm in Cali a frank build is not going to pass inspection/smog if I get a tech that does the job right, lol. If it looks like the stock engine and has matching vin's then it only needs to pass the tail pipe test.

Was able figure out that the threads for the plug were pretty much toast. So wasting a week ordering different sized extended tap handles trying to find one that fint down that damn tube. I ended up with a tap extension and a regular tap handle. I cleaned up the threads with a tap and found only the last few threads were good. The plug threaded in but only a few turns, definitely not enough thread engagement to withstand combustion. I ended up ordering a TIME-SERT spark plug extended length kit from Amazon only to have them ship me the wrong kit. I had to send that back and order another one. One more week down the drain, but I finally got the kit today. I spent about 1 hour total with the kit and had the new larger diameter hole and threads cut and the insert installed. New plug and a new coil and she fired right up and was purring like a kitten. I installed 3 other new plugs just to be on the safe side and am considering replacing the other 3 coils now. She lives, that's all that maters now though.

Replaced a bunch of little miscellaneous parts this last weekend. Have some more parts on order. My car is starting to show its age, but with a little TLC it will be as good as new again.

Parts Replaced
Replaced 3 coil packs (1 replaced already)
Replaced both rear hatch struts (stays)
Replaced burned out bulb in gauge cluster (half of the speedo was dark at night)
Replaced burned out bulb in HVAC controls
Replaced two of the plastic clips that hold the hatch plastic on, at some point they went missing on their own
Replaced two of the clips (3 part assembly) that hold the rubber spoiler under the front bumper (have no idea how two of them went missing)
Replaced the plastic cap over the rear hatch window sprayer (broke off a few months ago, probably from car wash)

Parts On Order
Driver side sunvisor
Driver and Passenger lower window trim (the black stuff has almost all peeled of the OEM parts)
Driver and Passenger window sash's (one broke had a broken tab and was coming off, its now held on with double back tape. they are both discolored anyway)

Also new tires on the CTR wheels: Bridgestone Potenza RE970AS Pole Position in 215/45 - 17. So far they are a great improvement over the tires that come on the wheels when I bought them. I've usually only bought UHP summer tires and this is the first time I'm getting a set of UHP all season tires since I have a set of track wheels and tires for auto-x and track days. I've only driven on them for two days but so far the ride is a lot smoother and quieter. Grip feels just as good as it did before. I'm definitely impressed with them. If my opinion changes I'll post about them again, lol.

Replaced the sun visor in the parking lot at work after I picked the parts up from South Bay Honda (www.hondapartscheap.com). New one is kinda squishy unlike the hard old one. I guess at some point I'll be replacing the passenger one just to have a matching set. Kinda expensive though 78 bucks. I'll be replacing the door trim pieces this weekend probably. That takes care of most of the little issues on the car from 10 years of normal wear and tear. I need to order a dozen or so clips that have broken over the years still (splash shield, wheel well liners and for some reason the clips that hold the fenders on near the door hinges).

Ordered myself a Christmas/Birthday present as well, EDM CTR Door panels. The last parts I needed to complete my Type-R conversion. After that all that will need to be done is an engine build. Originally I wanted to swap in a k20a2, but I think i'm just going to build my k20a3 bottom end and build and install a k20a2 head and get a ctr 6 speed transmission with LSD. This will prevent me from having any issues with smog or having to deal with the state ref. Just need to buy another car first so I can have a DD while working on the engine... so this is still a ways out. Possibly a few more years.

Broke down and ordered them from speedstar. Expensive, but if Wayne comes through it will be worth it. Only have to buy them once and I don't plan on ever selling my car.

Interior
Type-R interior pretty much complete now. Just need a real airbag cover. I'm not going to do the Type-R rear seats because I don't want to lose the middle seat-belt option in the back.

Exterior
Exterior is complete minus the real headlights. I don't want to install RHD headlights, someday maybe I'll get a set of LHD headlights... but not right now.

Suspension & Brakes
Done. Wheels, check. Brakes, check. Swaybars, Check. Bracing, Check. The HFP kit is pretty close to the Type-R suspension, so that will do.

Engine & Transmission
Well pretty much nothing done here except for the spark plug cover, manifold cover and dip stick. LOL. Plan is to build the stock motor bottom end with an A2 crank and forged pistons and connecting rods. I'm planning on building an A2 head with a port and polish, valve job with dual springs and a set of cams. This will all mate to a rebuilt K20A2 transmission with an LSD. Should be putting out Type-R power by then.

After that is all done I'll get the car re-pained (staying VBP) and throw on the Type-R badges... but not until the engine lives up the Type-R name.

very nice! Hope my sway bar is doing you good at the auto x events. I am in the midst of a suspension upgrade myself and will repost my members ride again once done. (my last page was deleted from the crash)

Out of curiosity, how much did those door panels cost you?

For the pillar trim pieces there is a screw at the top hidden behind the rubber door seal. You take the screw out and just slide the trim piece up. Grab the top and the bottom and it should come off pretty easy. If your plastic are good you just slide the new one back on to them and fasten with the screw again. I popped out the clips because i had new clips going on.

Does anyone know the part numbers of those door sill trims? Is it #1 and #4 in the link below?

Long overdue update.

Ordered a set of Koni Yellow's today as part of their annual "Shock Value" sale from K-series parts. Already got the tracking number, can't wait. I'll be installing this in my old stock front struts. Will order a set of Ground Control Coil-overs next month and assemble them with my Hotchkis camber plates to finalize the new suspension setup. Then it will be off for an alignment.

Will most likely be getting a Kpro by the end of the year. Have really slowed on spending money on the car for fun things and have been doing or needing to do a lot more maintenance lately. I had the radiator crack on me last month and had to replace it. The weather stripping is starting to go and needs to be replaced as well. Seat belts aren't retracting so nicely anymore and need to be replaced. Car needs to be repainted in the worst way. After I get all that sorted out I'll be saving for my engine rebuild.

I'm going to have a few parts up for sale in the next few months. Possibly will let go of my DC sports TI top strut bar since it won't fit with the camber plates... haven't decided yet though. Will probably be selling my old track/autocross wheels as well once the tires are toast. 16x7 +40 Rota Slipstreams.

Going to redo my brakes after I get my suspension all put together and dialed in.

Brake Plans
- Rebuild and powder coat my DC5-s Brake Calipers
- Stoptech Cryo Slotted brake rotors all around
- EBC Yellowstuff pads all around
- Motul 600 Fluid

Might go from the EP3 master cylinder to the RSX-S master cylinder also... haven't decided yet.

Wheels and Tires will be after the brakes
- 17x7.5 +48 Enkei RPF1s with 225/45-17 Toyo Proxies R1Rs
or
- Powder coat my existing Rota Slipstreams Gold (16x7 +40) and fit them with 225/50-16 Toyo Proxies R1Rs

I'll be going to a track day at Laguna Seca next week, so I'm going to hold off on the suspension until after that. I don't want to learn the limits and handling characteristics of a new suspension on a track. I'll save that for auto-x.

Hooked on driving is a great way to experience trackdays, they make it really accessible for first timers. I'd recommend them for sure.

Car's coming together for sure, guess its time for an update. I've been slowly working on the suspension bits. I got the rear's GCs and KONIs assembled and am still working on the fronts. I got a little over zealous when gutting the front shocks for the KONI's and I accidentally cut the perch off the first strut. I needed to trim the perch for the GC sleeve... not cut it off, oops. I did it correctly for the second one. I ended up getting some help from my father in law welding the perch back on and am ready to assemble the fronts now. Got some recommendations that I shouldn't use the 440lb 6" springs from the GC kit, but get 8" springs instead or I'd end up blowing my Konis. So i have some 450lb 8" eibach springs coming today. Once its all put together and installed in the car it will be alignment time. I'll need some auto-x seat time with the new suspension to feel it out and get used to it before I hit the track again.

Next up will be a KPRO and tune...
