I'm gonna be needing one of these very bad come this winter guys! it was my first winter in my ep3 and lugging snowboards around ended up slicing my rear tints :(

how much am i looking at for a roof rack? 400?

I was looking at the Yakima racks, from the looks of it you have to buy the expensive base, which is like $400, and then pay more for the ski rack attachment. I didn't look at thule yet.
edit: wow, thule seems a bit more expensive....I'm confused about how the thule mounts, I can't see pictures in this thread, being at work. The yakima has a "stretch" base, which makes it possible to mount on a car with just 2 doors, but how does the thule work? something similar?

Good racks aren't cheap, but you can find stuff on ebay, craigslist etc for a good price...I had a Thule fit kit for the EP and the short roof adapter for sale on here for a while, but they ended up selling on ebay for cheap.

The short-roof adapter would be about the same thing as the Yakima stretch kit. you may or may not need it depending on what you're using it for.
I needed it...

Well, I'd just be needing it for skis, but eventually I'd like the flexibility to put a bike or two up there. So, it makes the price of the thule a little bit more. They both use ~48'' bars, do they stick out a lot? I've been noticing racks on cars lately that overhang by a few inches on each side of the car, pretty ugly.

you can kind of see on my pic that they do extend past the roof a bit on both sides, but not by too much

If you go with the 400XTR instead of the 400/400XT it uses a different bar and I think it's a bit shorter...a bit more expensive too though.

Do you guys notice a considerable drop in MPG?

I dont find a massive drop in MPG. It depends on if you have the fairing or not. The fairing does help alot.

I was always afraid to run my racks like how chuck has them. I always felt like I was gonna blow out the glass in the rear windows. I'd rather spend the $80 for the SRA, not $200 on a window.

As for pricing on the racks, my entire system, so fit kit, feet, bars, fairing, SRA, ski holders, bike rack, locks for the racks, locks for the bike holder all came in at about $1100CND. Mind you, i bought mine at just slightly higher than cost from my work. Retail would be around $1500CND brand new.

If you're worried about fuel economy and you're only using it for bikes you can get a hitch and run a hitch rack instead. Sure you can't get a ski or kayak rack for a hitch but a good hitch/hitch bikerack will only run you $500-600, and that is for the very best hitch rack. My combo was only half that price. I admit it doesn't look as good, but you don't have to take the wheels off the bike get it on the rack.

I only asked about the MPG because some douche at my work keeps nagging me about how a roof rack ruined his life... (He's just hatin)

I asked for a photo only because you mentioned possibly damaging the rear windows. I didn't even think about how & where it will clip to the car... On my Scion xB the Yakima kit connected to the back doors, but I don't understand how the Thule/Yakima will clip to nothing...

Thanks again!

see the pic i posted on page 1. You can see the Short roof adaptor in it. It uses a secondary mount where the rear bar should be mounted and a bar to move the rear loadbar back further on the roof.

Perfect, that will allow me to use the larger cargo basket too!

Now, does anybody know if this will interfere with the Honda vent visors?

Thanks!

a few people have run them like this on the ep3 for years and never had a problem... though i would get the SRA if i could afford it right now.

gas mileage went down a couple mpg's for me... if you normally do 80 on the highway you will see a huge decrease.

My Thule rack system:
http://i258.photobucket.com/albums/hh280/shanewdude/car_oliphant.jpg

My mileage is affected most when there is one bike on the rack... they suck the gas big time, plus make a lot of noise if you have the sun-roof open! The boards and box aren't too bad for that.

No change in MPG at all. But the boats full kevlar and around 25 pounds so other may have a different experience.

if you want to go with yakima you'll need
Q6 and Q116 clips
Q-towers
48" cross bars
44" fairing
and two bike trays,
they have different types of trays, if you want to remove the front wheel get something similar to the "steelhead" and a "front wheel fork"
if you don't want to remove the front wheel each time something along the lines of an "anklebiter" or "lockjaw Raptor"
just depends on what you want, that will cover your two bikes.

and as far as the front fairing is concerned i wouldnt think it would hinder your use of the sunroof

I have both, a roof rack and a hitch rack. Both are Yakima. Your gas mileage will drop about 3 less miles per gallon with the roof rack. That's a lot for some of us. If you have a choice, consider a hitch rack over a roof rack. If you do go for the roof rack, just remember your bikes are up their. People do tend to forget and bam, that's when you'll see your bikes crashing down. If you have a garage, always leave a chair in front of the garage so when you get off to move the chair, you'll end up seeing the bikes.

Is that a Yakima rack? Reason I'm asking is, I just pieced together the base rack... after looking at the pictures, it looks like all 4 Q towers are attached to the door jamb. What measurements are you guys using to clip onto the quarter window area?

Also, real quick... If you are using Yakima racks... what bike trays are you using? I'm hoping to find a cheap Viper on craigslist.

Btw, if anyone is wondering... I piece together everything via craigslist/ebay for under $300 (so far)

On the Canadian EP, maybe the US one too, there is actually little dents under the roofline to show you where to line them up. This is where they were designed to go. Secondly, if the foot spacing is not proper, your rack may not hold properly. Over-tighten, and you do damage to the roof line. Under-tighten, and you may come loose (imagine that with a canoe on the highway, I wouldn't want to be liable for hurting or killing someone). Why take a chance by not following the manufacturer's mounting instructions? Trust me, I sold roof racks for 5 years while working at an outdoor store, and have had training by both Thule and Yakima.

edit: Just looked at the previously posted pics. While it might be just fine and not come off, the angle of the clamp relative to the foot is probably not exactly how they were built. I say you're taking a slight risk, but to each his own. Personally, I'd install according to instructions.

I wasn't answering anything to do with your question. I was simply posting links and information for people that need it in order to further help them with their instals. And YES i know i had mine on the wrong way (or the non suggested way). I put mine on that way in order to be able to use the type of bike rack it came with. I didn't have enough money to buy the recommended rack and place it properly, so i tested out my method and it worked. The rack has been off for a while now anyways since its winter and i have no use for it, but as soon as i buy rails and it gets sunny again it will be back on the "correct" way.
