Anyone have any install pics of the autopower roll bar/cage?

In particular the mounting points and trimmed rear panels?

I dont have pictures, but i have the cage installed in my car. You have to cut a significant chunk of the plastuc rear quarter panel passanger area to gain access to the wheel wells where you drill through and mount the cage. The feet of those bars are curved to match the curvature of the wheel wells. As far as the main hoop mounting point, it sits flush against the step up to the rear seat bench.

Could you maybe snap a couple pictures of the 4 mounting points???? I would be GREATLY appreciative.

yes see in the first picture how much unnecessary cutting I did.. dont do that lol. The problem I had was I was installing this while not removing the rear black panels, which made it hard to not only drill the holes through the wells, but to even torque down the screws. I would suggest doing some precise measurements, take out the plastic panels, do the cutting with a dremmel, install the roll bar, then put back the panels to see how it fits (make the necessary cuts for the precise fitment you wish to obtain) then from there you can torque down the screws/install the panels back.

also ... the hardware that comes with the bars are good however over time (because I daily drive my car) the nuts became loose and some even lost. Buy some nut washer locks, never ran into the problem again.

does the foot come with the cage? hahahaha
can you take a pic with the seats down? I'm thinking of getting the Mugen rear bar and what to see it it'll hit it.

What color you powdercoat it? I hear the coat that comes from Autopower is CRAP! as you unwrap it, it takes the paint with it.

Ya that's my biggest worry, looks like you don't need to trim much to clear the cages back legs..... however to get the drill in there is going to be a pain ha. I have the entire rear interior out except for those panels and they don't seem that easy to remove.

Should be picking the cage up in the next day or so, I'll post pics of the color then. Should be fairly obvious with the 'look' of the car what color it's going to be haha.

The black finish that it came with actually really good. Had a couple minor scratches on the bar and the feet were kinda beat up but it was alright.

It was posted on his member page.

There is a friend of mine with a DC5 that got his from SafeDrives.

Day 1 of the install haha.....

Remove the driver side rear side panel to test fit where I need to cut. Also laid out where I need to cut the carpet. Fit is pretty damn good so far.

Tomorrow I'm pulling the other side panel, cutting the panels, test fit then drill. Should be done tomorrow.

After a solid 4 hours of work yesterday we got the majority of it done.

Carpet cut, got everything drilled and fitted, also got the rear panels trimmed all nice. Just need to put everything back in and bolt it all down. Might finish it tomorrow night. What a pain in the ass install haha, my back is killing me today lol.

in the wheel wells, did you remove some sound material or did you install it over it... kinda like a gasket?
How was the drilling? go pretty smoothly? you have to remove the wheel well cover inside to get access to it?

I didn't remove any of the sound material no.

Drilling was easy, I used a $10 3/8" titanium drill bit, went though the floor like butter.

Ye,s you have to remove the interior rear panels and the rear fender liners to get the bolt in.

I have two sets of the white willans..... white on white on white haha. Actually that just gave me another idea for door panels...... hmmmm.

I have lots of pics, just give me time to get them all sorted and posted up. Should be really easy for cutting the panels and stuff for future ephatch installs.

05-19-2010, 10:34 AM
Are you making the 6 point into a SCCA or NASA legal cage or just for use on the street? I was asking cause I was curious how you will run door bars and a dash bar thats all. I'll probably just sell my auto power race roll bar and upgrade to a custom cage but i was curious what youll be doing thats all.

88crx, for the plates that go in the wheel well and underneath the car DO NOT forget to seal the backing plates in some way. I forgot to and I had to make new ones. I used duplicolor rubberized undercoating, with about 4 coats. 1 year later it still looks and is holding up great.

88crx
05-19-2010, 11:12 AM
I have painted the plates already.... and I'm going to goop up the u/s of the plates with RTV sealer so that should seal out any water.

That was your problem right?

SiRCivic03
05-20-2010, 11:00 AM
I sealed them with that stuff too. I ment the outside of the plates that sit in the wheel well and the bottom of the car. I forgot to paint/ undercoat them. They are just going to get hit with stones, water and dirt outside of the car, so my first set rusted to shit because i did not protect them. I used rubberized undercoating on the second set and it works great.

88crx
05-20-2010, 04:17 PM
It would just be surface rust on the plates though, right? No big deal.

They're pretty thick to be rotting from rust!

get the rsx auto power cage with the drivers side 'relax' area. my seat is back and reclined a couple inches, im 6' so...

it has the same style drivers side as the second picture a couple posts down.

Sorry for the late reply..... but now that I've looked at the cage position some more I think I could have pushed it back even further which would have been nice. With the seating position the JDM CTR seat puts you in (higher than stock) it puts my head really close to the hoop haha.... not all that safe. If you get the 4 point without the cross support bar then you can put your seat all the way back and have no problems.

Still no one with better pics of the 6pt? I'm going back and forth between that and the race roll bar. From those pics I can't really tell what head clearance is going to be like, and I don't want an unsafe situation on the street.

I'm 6'2, but I have sparco sprints that sit pretty low. I'm not really that concerned about the top hoop clearance, mostly about the a-pillar bars. I have a dd, so I don't drive the car every day, but I don't want to have to throw the helmet on when I drive it on the street. lol

I think I may build a full cage similar to the 6pt that auto power offers. I know some say that fitment doesn't look that good, but to be honest, with it being a bolt on cage it's pretty damn good. Only way you're going to get better is if you do a full weld in cage and start cutting into your dash so the front bars that go toward the floor connect further up. I'll post some pics once I get this project underway.

There is a reason why cages like this are not allowed in racing. They are simply not safe! So unless your cage looks like this VVVVV you are wasting your time and money and adding weight to your car. I'm not hating on you guys just trying to give you some safety heads up.

That's all well and good if you're making a strictly race-only car, but frankly he wouldn't daily drive that car anywhere with that much modification. And how much weight do you think all that tube steel is adding? We're not talking about OMFGBBQ uber racecar roll cages here, just a little added protection in a rollover. BTW according to Autopower, their Race Roll Bar meets SCCA organization rules for "most" vehicles (see Appendix C of the SCCA rulebook).

lol when i think of a roll over i think a little past the "oh i simply just pushed my car over on its lid" type of sanario. You will be traveling at a great speed if your car was to roll over, so do you really honestly think that its really that safe? Yes SCCA has these autopower cages aproved but for what type of racing?? Are they weld in type or the bolt in type? All i know is if i wanted something safe in a roll over situation and still keep it as a daily car i would go the cheapest route and get a proper rear section welded in by a professional that meets all types of racing rules. Also if you decide to go even further and want to track only the car you can always weld in more.

You'll find the Autopower bolt in cages primarily in the showroom stock class cars. Where they meet the minimum requirements.

the Cusco cage with its bent forward bars do not meet SCCA or NASA specifications. (due to the bent bars)

gtolio
11-29-2010, 02:37 PM
I wouldn't put the Cusco in any car because it's not safe on or off track, but the autopower (even bolt in) is safe and will hold up in a roll over at speed. Obviously a full custom weld-in cage like the one shown on the last page is going to be better than a bolt in made to fit with a full interior, but the autopower bolt in is still a good cage and I would trust it. Plenty of people have shown rollover pics with that cage and it did what it needed to do.

The Autopower bar in this EG (http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=1495699) seemed to hold up well.
If I were to get a bolt in bar, I would think about adding some plate steel to where it bolts through the floor. Check out what happened to this Mustang (http://jalopnik.com/5390934/mustang-cover-boy-tries-to-corner-flips-over-tire-wall).

We can argue semantics all day long, but if NASA and SCCA (who have pretty stringent guidelines as far as racing safety) approve it for open road racing and club racing it's because it's safe for the track. You're not going to go any faster during a full blown racing event than you are during either of those, car for car.
