I have an 02 SI. When I'm cruising at 70mph my rpm are around 4k. Does that sound right? At 60mph around 3,500k. If these are right, thats gotta be killing gas mileage right? What can I do get a longer 5th? What would it take to go 6sp? I know probably a lot. Any knowledge is appreciated, thanks nick. Btw I'm loving this forum compared to others.

Your RPM's are about the same as mine, but thats not saying its normal. I have an RSX engine also. I have noticed gas mileage does go down at the higher speeds, and is best around the 50mph range. It your interstates MPH isn't 70, I'd just suggest doing the speed limit and not worrying about it. I try to avoid going over 65 as much as I can.

I see. Limit goes from 55 to 70 here on the interstate. I wish I had a 6sp now.

Same here. If I go 70 on a 65 I get bad mpg but 60-65 good.

you guys must drive very inefficiently, i can get 30-35 mpg driving mostly highway on a tank...

I get like 11-15. But thats my car, so we won't even go there.

Ha i just got my car so I havent figured out mpg yet. Most of the time i shift at 3k or less and coast. Just at 70mph seems like at 4k owuld kill my gas.?

lol are you being serious?

And i am pretty sure honda designed our engines to do well in mpg at high rpms

Mine sits at 3.5k at 70mph. Does this present an overheating problem when going long distance like 500mi or more? I have a road trip in 2 weeks and just asking if it's safe to rev so high for so long.

I doubt it. I have driven the ep to san francisco from san diego (about 500 miles) and it's been fine. I just try to not leave my AC on for long periods of time since it's an extra load on an already hard working engine.

After about 40-45 mph the EP's mpg drops exponentially due to many variables; aerodynamics, gearing, motor design, etc. You can get over 40 mpg on the highway stock but you really have to want it. My Ep's best was 42.5 but with different gearing, pulse and glide, narrow tires with high psi, aero mods, scan gauge, etc., you can go way higher.
Check out ecomodder.com for some tips.
Or just get one of these:

no because there will be constant airflow into the radiator and around the engine :mwink:

No you will not overheat when driving at 3.5K rpms, thats why the radiator sits in the front of the car to cool off the coolent.

Mine also sits at 3.5K at 70mph, 7.6K at 152mph, time for another gear lol.

Overheating at interstate speeds? You really think Honda would have made a car that can't handle a sustained highway drive?

Fuel efficiency will go down somewhat at 70 vs. 50 or so, but it won't drop a whole lot. Just drive according to speed limits and traffic conditions and don't sweat 2mpg or so.

I've driven about 1000-2000 miles in one day... about 5 times. in MY ep... which is amazing. Never overheated once.

1500 miles in one day? Wow at an average of 70mph thats 21.5 hours!!

im planning my first trip from SF to LA on the EP, and this is actually what deters me from hitting the "faster" highways

i just dont feel too comfortable cruising at such high RPM's (around 3.8k at ~75mph), or even higher because on I-5 the cars seem to go 80 or above

but then again, why WOULD Honda make a car that cant handle highways?

so whatever, i'll keep her at 4k RPM and cruise from there

you people are so weird haha

the car is absolutely fine driving for sustained periods of time at 4k rpms

rpms wont hurt your car sheesh...

i mean shit, you all should see how i drive...im a road racer so i have nasty (or call it awesome fun) habit of driving in the powerband, did it with my old 86si and do it with the ep...i dont give a fuck ill drive around town at 4-5k instead of upshifting i do a lot of city driving in 2nd and 3rd...thank god i have my twin loop exhaust or the thing would be loud as shit...

to put it into perspective, in my old 86si i drove in highschool and first 2 years of college i would redline basically every shift and rang its neck (kept the rpms up) every day all day, and that thing had some work done (was putting down 115whp over the 91hp to the crank stock) and it had 365k on it and i never had one single problem with the engine...i did stop doing this as much with the 86 the last 6 months i drove it because i had replaced my exhaust with a header and a 4" muffler where the cat used to go and then just dumped the exhaust out the side...so if i didnt stay off it, the car was wicked loud

I've never heard of a car made, that you couldn't cruise on the highway with lol.

DC5 base tranny ftw! The lower fd does help a lot with fuel economy.

i thought the base rsx tranny was the same as the ep's. and that the type s 6th gear is the same as the ep's 5th.

you'll be fine. i went from LA to SF and back a couple of times with my ep and it had about 165k miles on it at the time. not a single problem. my car now have over 180k miles and still runs like a champ.

I got that Type R 6six speed tranny. $20 bucks for a 200 mile drive and still have a day of driving around when i'm there before gas light turns on :tehe:

For sureee....unless your not moving lol streetfire.net has a vid of a rx-7 high reving not moving for like 10min. Poor motor was so fucked, he even caught his rear bumper on fire lol

if its not moving and the engine is working id expect that would be the clutch/tranny went

The Ep's 5 speed should be 60Mph at 3k, 70Mph 3.5K, and 80Mph should be at 4K or at least thats what mine does and I can still get 30-35MPG.

No, the base DC5 has a lower final drive but it is a 5 speed tranny just like the ep3.
