DIY Volvo Lip (1990-1994 VOLVO 740 N 940)

I did this a while ago but it got lost in the crash... I didn't think this would get as popular as it did, but here it is for people that haven't done it yet :msmile:

Tools Needed:

Screw gun
Screw Driver
Utility Knife
Sharpie
Heat Gun
3/4" Self Tapping Screws
Jack and Jack stands
Volvo Lip

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g248/k20ep3/IMG_1610.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g248/k20ep3/IMG_1621.jpg

Step 1: By using the two original holes in the lip center on the bumper and mark with arrows.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g248/k20ep3/IMG_1617.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g248/k20ep3/IMG_1613.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g248/k20ep3/IMG_1614.jpg

Step 2:

Cut off all the tabs and cut some slits so the lip will fit flush and bend easier.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g248/k20ep3/IMG_1611.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g248/k20ep3/IMG_1612.jpg

Step 3:

Use the two original holes in the lip and line it up with your marks. At this point you want to put a screw in each hole.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g248/k20ep3/IMG_1618.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g248/k20ep3/IMG_1619.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g248/k20ep3/IMG_1620.jpg

Step 4:

Now that the lip is centered slowly work your way down each side and screw off the lip (I did one side first then the other). Make sure the lip is even along the bumper before you screw it off. Also using a heat gun helps make the lip more flexible and easier to move around. You can use as many screws as you feel necessary.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g248/k20ep3/IMG_1623.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g248/k20ep3/IMG_1624.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g248/k20ep3/IMG_1625.jpg

Step 5:

At this point the lip should all be screwed off and on the bumper. By using a sharpie, draw a line to your liking as a guide to cut along. Again using the heat gun here will make the cut go much more smoothly and easier.

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g248/k20ep3/IMG_1626.jpg
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g248/k20ep3/IMG_1628.jpg

Step 6:

You are all done and this was a piece of cake. It took me about 45 min all by myself so if you have a friend help it can go a lot faster.

No prob dude!
All my buddies seem to find 10 volvo lips everytime they go to Pick-A-Part and junkyards around here.
I go, and it seems like Volvo's are banned haha
You can also get them off eBay, around 50 US dollars plus another 30 for shipping.
Maybe see if they can ship to Canada for less than the website I sent you.

Look up "Lower Valence" instead of "Front Lip"

Make sure you send a PM of your ride with the lip!
and post it up here for everyone to see!

try this, they mention a list of places they don't ship, and Canada isn't on the list.
Email them and ask'em for a shipping quote!
let me know how that goes.

Yeah I went to the Pick-A-Part yesterday. I found ONE volvo lip, bad condition though. But I examined some other lips. Looks like theyed work
They just need to not hold it's structural integretiy so well.
The volvo lip, keeps it's shape good, but its really flimsy, which is why it's so easy to work with.
Other volvos in the same time frame, had different lips that were a MUCH stiffer plastic. Probably would have been really hard to fit on a Honda.
But I walked in n out of all the different cars, trying to find other lips.
The volvo seems to be the only one.
The others I saw, had too much "shape" to them, which made them model specific, in my opinion.

ep3chris, any luck on the lip in canada?

pics of the new lip.
Dropped on skunk2's 2.5 front, 2.25 rear.
No paint, I dig the oe plastic uneven flat grey/black look :)

ep3chris, I might be going to a different Pick-A-Part within this week or next week.
If you want, I can ship it out to you at no additional cost.
I'll find out how much it is to ship through my Pop's work.
The lip will most likely cost $9.95 US dollars plus 9.75% CA taxes.
And I doubt you'd ask but no I will not go less than that. That is how much the Pick-A-Part will most likely charge me.

The one in Ontario, CA charged me that.
I'll be going to Monrovia, CA, which will probably charge me the same if I can find one.

Oh haha my friend put it as a joke.
Just cause it doesn't really add aerodynamics, like the other kits
ctr, mugen, hfp, etc
And I don't have any mods so its already slow, and the lip just adds 4 pounds :D
hahhha

But in reality it probably keep less air from traveling under the car, which would mean aero wise, its improved

Less air under the car is good, but you also want whatever goes under there to get out asap! :mwink:

I meant the front lips won't look good on my ep3, but that volvo valence would just look jdm with a sticker lol. Pretty awesome. It was funny how I saw your car and I started looking for skunk2 front lips. How ignorant of me haha.

Hah
Nahh I actually don't go there
I go to Citrus Community College about 5 miles North of it.
But I'm a member of CPP's car club
So I'm around once a week.
We stopped meeting for the summer
but during the semester we meet every week.
You should hang with us
Theres an In N Out, Chipotle, and El Pollo Loco where we meet
We'll feast!
And it'll be sick to have another ep roll in with me :D

You dorming or living around CPP when it starts up this semester?

if you do, try to find a volvo lip in SD before you come up
the 2 local junkyards didn't have any last time I went, a month or 2 ago.
I found just one.
They might have another though
we can hit one up if you can't get one from SD

Does this work best with specifically the 90-94 940 or 740 lips? Or do other Volvo lips work? What about VW or BMW?

27rocks
11-13-2011, 07:23 PM
As far as Volvo's go this is the only only one that will pretty much work. I haven't experimented with anything else like VW or BMW so i can't say they fit or don't. Give it a shot... If you go to a junk yard i suggest taking a tape measure with you to to make sure its wide and deep enough to fit our bumpers. That's how i found out about this lol. I was just curious so i checked and when i finally got it under the bumper i knew i could make it work with a little tlc.

Yeah the first time i did it i had it almost flush with the edge of the bumper and i didn't really like the way it looked. It kinda almost gave it a little angle that pointed up in a way, so i bought a new one and mounted it just a little further back to have it flatten out.

As far as the pictures go in the DIY they are all from the same day...

It wasn't that bad. If your getting it from the junkyard, crowbar will help. Bring a screwdriver, there was like 4 screws I had to take out. I think it's easier getting it from the junkyard, you don't have to worry about the rest of the car. We had to smash out a headlight to get down into the inside of the bumper.

i went to a junkyard to find one and the only 740 already had it removed. i was going to attempt to fit up a 760 turbo lip (looked about the same). and hopefully post here but the lady wanted $23.00 and it was not exactly prime condition. however im pretty sure the 760 lip will fit it looks the same and was very flimsy i think it could have been easily manipulated to fit. wish i could be positive tho.

$23 is pretty ridiculous for a junked piece of plastic haha. Apparently alot of people use an Accord (CD5) lip too

just installed mine and i was able to fit it perfectly without cutting the ends at all. My opinion is to start with on end and work your way to the other side. i found mine for $28... i also used 10 nuts, bolts and washers on mine.
