ok so I messed up big time on this one guys.... I put to engine back together after putin a shim on the block side with some copper spray like it said in the instructions. then put the head gasket on top of that.. Put the engine back together started it up and nothing sealed at all... So what should I do? I needed to use the shim witch is .020 because we broke the service limit witch is .005 my buddy told me that I should just check the piston to valve clearence and if its not that bad then we dont even need to use the shim and it would give me a better compression ratio ..

NEVER use a shim on a head gasket, they will NEVER seal correctly on an aluminum block.

I have gone far past .005" to clean up a block, besides if you think about it for a moment, the mugen headgasket is .010 thinner than a stock gasket.........

If you have to regain that extra clearance then you simply call Cometic and order a thicker gasket.

You will need to get a new headgasket anyways, the one you used with the shim is worthless now.

Allright will do talon. Now how thick should the gasket im geting be??? I called cometic and they said that the smallest one they have is .027 Whats the thickness of our oem gasket? Its all turning into a huge math problem and I cant stand math. LOL He took .021 off the head can you give me a formula I can use to figure this out? Its drivin me crazy lol

ok so I think the stock head gasket 0.0025 SO should I take .0020 add that to .0025 and that should give me the thickness I need? If I get the gasket .0010 thinner to get better compression will that cause me a problem?

Off the shelf Cometic Gasket is 30 mils, Stock is about 28~27. You need to take what you took off the head. The 20mils or so. add that to the head gasket. and get yourself a 40-50 mil gasket. Cometic will be happy to make one for you.

.021"+ .028" OEM gasket = .049" so. Cometic makes a .036" a .045" and a .051" I wouldn't go thinner then a .045"

Now when I get this gasket Friday do I need to use any type of sealent spray or somthin? The guy said it depends on the surface finish on the block and the head... what do u think?

ABSOLUTELY NOT ! ! !

Non of those sealants actually seal and can actually cause leaks.

The mating surfaces must be absolutely flat and CLEAN.

EVERY time that the head and block are torqued together, the head gasket makes an impression into the aluminum. If the new gasket is slightly different in bore dia compared to a stockie, it may also allow a head gasket leak. I really hate to not deck an engine/head before bolting together.

Allright sounds good I geting the .045 head gasket friday from cosmetics. I made shure that the block and the head are clean. The head was cleaned and resurfaced. The guy did a good job so I hope that this project will be over as soon as I get this gasket in.. Thanks for all ur help ..

A lot of the time you can get away with just doing the head as the head gasket actually seals on the block side against the sleeve.
