Ok this is my repost of my old How To that when down the crash. I thought It was lost but I found it in my Netbook. Just to let you all know code P1298 never reappeared after and I scan my car once a week.

I had engine code P1298 on for awhile. This code stand for :
P1298 (20) Electrical Load Detector(ELD) Circuit Hiqh voltage
wich mean that your ELD went wrong and needs to be replaced. If anyone want to schime on this and tell us what exactly it does and why it goes bad feel free to do so, I’ll add your comment to my How To.

Tools needed : Philips screw driver… that’s it
Aprox. Time : 20 mins

ELD Part number : 38255-S5A-003 (thanks to Mugen_TaffyEP)
ELD Cost : Between 29,99$ and 39,99$ I guess. Got mine for 35$
Where to Buy : Honda Dealer
Notes : This ELD could be listed under CRV but I garrantee you it works!

This is actually what the ELD looks like. Bigger than I thought it was!
http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv26/sirjmage/ELD.jpg

1st Step :
Open your fuse box and with your screw driver unscrew the 4 screws of the 80A Battery fuse and the 50A AR fuse. Remove both the screws and fuses and put them somwhere you won’t lose them.
http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv26/sirjmage/Fusebox.jpg

2nd Step :
To access the ELD plug you must slide down the down cover of the fuse box. To do so just pull it down gently and nicely and it will eventually come down.

This is what the cover looks like.

Once you have it out. Go under the fuse box with your hand and pull the plug out by holding the little « clamp » on it and pull up the ELD with your other hand.

3rd Step :
Now that you go the ELD removed, you must reassemble everything back together in reverse order.
Put the new ELD in
Insert the plug in
Put back the undercover
Put back the 80A and 50A fuse and screw them.
Reset your ECU/Code by unplugging the 15A ECU fuse for 1 to 10 minutes then put it back in and start your car and do the Idle Relearn process.

So as you can see it’s pretty simple and shouldn’t take you more than 20 minutes.
Have Fun!

Just remembered someone as said you can get the ELD for cheaper online at handaaccessories or something like that. Also, you should unplug your battery before doing things in the fusebox.

I hope you didn't have your entire Fusebox replaced? Most stealership and mechanic will want to replace the entire fusebox wich is like 500$ so guys be sure to read the code before acknoledging the repair :)

No, but stupid me did a "learn as I go" job and it took forever for a simple job. Very frustrating.

I think there is (was) a thread about this last year. As I stated there: Learn from my mistake and do NOT replace your entire fusebox assembly (the one under the hood) no matter how much your mechanic tells you to. It is not necessary, unless theres something up with it of course, in doing so.

ah. Missed this when I posted. Yes it gets expensive. Mine wasn't $500 but it was pretty outrageous.

You mean you ordered the ELD on EBAY? How much did you get it for? Also if you can post pics of the "plugs" so we can see what you're talking about it would be nice

I can't believe people will actually try to rip customer like this. I just hope you were the only one on EPHatch to get ripped and no one else will be.

holy crap dude. I really think (for those of us who take our EP's to dealerships/untrustworthy mechanics) this oughta be stickied or something just so no one else, with strong emphasis, gets raped. I think mine was around the $200-$400 range I can't remember but no where near $800.. :whoa: Sorry man

OMG 800$ !?!? I hope they changed something else like the timing chain or whatever? loll Poor you, should've ask a dealer before just to see how much it would cost then tell them to order the piece(ELD) and I'll isntall it myself :P

Here is the TSB for this issue. You can see in the notes
NOTE: Previously, if an ELD required replacement, you had to replace the under-hood fuse/relay box. To reduce repair costs, replacement ELDs are now available.4993

That's some really nice info you found there! The way I replaced it is wayyyy more easier and faster than this guide lol

If I understand the PDF correctly it seems like the ELD that were shipped with our car "might" have a faulty solder. And the replacement part# isn't the same one as the ELD that came with our cars. Good to know!

Did this DIY the other was sweet. Don't let the stealership try to swindle you out of 500 for a new fusebox. The ELD is the same one from an 03 CRV.

Only problem i had was the "unclipping of the ELD." I just pulled up hard and got it out.

And I guess your P1298 went away? It was hard for me describing how to "unclip" the ELD and didn't took picture of the actual clip/fastener.

Glad it helped you!

Yea that was the only part that was tricky. I couldn't "unclip" from the bottom so just pulled fucking hard and it popped out. Yea I had CEL about my Catalytic converter too and bought one but now that's gone away so now I have a brand new cat in my closet IDK what to do with. I'm gonna need a new battery too I believe. But ya thanks for the DIY! Saved 500 bucks not listening to them thieves at the stealership

YAAAYY!!!

I just rescanned the other day to verify I only had the P1298 code, and was telling my buddy that I didn't want to fork over all the $$$ to get a new fuse box to make that CEL go away.

I'm ordering that ELD on Monday. Hellz yeah.

Hi, I replaced it with a new ELD from Honda, but the code keep coming back - p1298.

I reset it with my OBDII, drove around for a bit and it came right back. Tried it twice.

Anything else to try?

check the voltage going to it. down load the repair manual for it and look up the code it has a step by step on how to diagnose and repair this. Mine also just crapped out and it had a good 5 volts to it so i changed the ELD and its all fixed now. good luck.

Ok. Thanks. I will follow the diagnostic per service manual. Was really hoping swapping out with a new ELD will take care of it.

Happy to report it is no longer throwing a p1298 code. Was going to check the voltage per service manual and as I was taking out the plug at the back of the ELD, I noticed it just came out without even pinching on the clip. So, it turns out I made 2 mistakes. One was I plugged it into the slot rather than the hole opening which is next to it. And I flipped the ELD 180deg around :(

So, the connector never did plug into the ELD. So turning it around 180, now the female part is showing in the hole opening rather than the slot opening. Plug it in, reset the code, drove around for 10mins and code never back. Happy camper now.... though still have to fix a grinding/clicking steering wheel/column. But that's another story.

when mine went bad, it would cause my alternator to either stop charging, or produce too much voltage, which in turn made the sensors show false readings. luckily my mechanic didn't gouge me even though he replaced the complete fuse box assembly. only paid 126.00 for it plus labor
