Well yesterday a buddy stopped by from out of town. I was in the process of cleaning the shed out and had tossed the T28 turbo from my old Talon out in the lawn. He picked it up and suggested we build a jet engine out of it. 2 hours later the turbo was spinning under it's own power.

My camera is on the fritz at the moment so no pics, but the turbo was bolted to a sawhorse, PVC pipe was attached to the outlet of the compressor snail, the pipe travelled downwards about 6 inches and then reduced down two sizes of pipe and then a 90 degree elbow of steel pipe, then a 4" length of steel pipe with 4 holes drilled and tapped for R/C engine glowplugs, this is the combustion chamber. Then the steel pipe necked down and then back out to the dia of the combustion chamber, makes another 90 degree bend and connects to the inlet of the turbine exhaust section. A small electric pump supplies oil pressure and the fuel is Propane.

Shop air is used to get the compressor wheel spinning and then the glowplugs are turned on and the propane valve opened, viola a radial jet engine is created.

DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!

It probably wouldnt hurt to build some type of scatter shield for when the blades break off, LOL

This is the same design as the original US/UK jet engines(the Whittle jet engine) but on a smaller DIY scale, they were of the radial flow design type and are still very prevalent in modern applications as APU's(Aux Power Units). The Germans used the axial flow design that the average person thinks of when you say a jet engine.

ok I kind of have an idea of how you did it, like where you placed the glow plugs at. Talon I need to see a vid of this haha ... How hot does it get???

Here is a setup with a little more thought into it, and alot more power, without a properly constructed combustion chamber you can just get it to run, which is what our abortion did, just barely run. Jet engines are very simple in operation. They can be very cheap and light weight. Just add a planetary gearbox and you could power a vehicle or generator or whatever. To get the most out of it with any sort of reliability, the fuel management will need to be concocted.

Yeah the T28 is a rather smallish.

I was contemplating a small turbine like those meant for APU's, spinning a ducted fan through a planetary gear drive. This would work great on the glider for a self-launch option. Adding a ducted fan or a prop actually greatly improves the power output and fuel economy.

That is definitely cool, but an afterburner would make it epic.

Seriously though, do you think you might exceed the recommended rpm for the turbo? That could be deadly...
