View Full Version : My first K swap/Build

USAF EP3

Hi all, I'm building my first K motor here coming from a background of D and B series motors. First I do have to mention that what I previously knew had to be thrown out since the newer K series engine is a whole different ballgame. So I bought the EP back in November of 2009 and since then I've been contemplating to do a swap and/or build. Okay now to the nitty gritty, here are the parts I've bought so far.

NOTE: New pictures and updates to the build will be edited into this original post

Head:
2003 Type S K20A2 cylinder head
Stock cams, springs, valves, etc

Block:
Bare CR-V K24A1 block
K24A1 Crankshaft
Type S K20A2 oil pump

Now for the goodies list of parts I got so far:
PRC Intake Manifold with 65mm throttle plate
Blueprint K20 35mm/30mm flat type valves standard size
Blueprint dual valve springs and retainers
Blueprint valve spring keepers/seals/seats
Blueprint Pro Series I-beam forged rods
Wiseco's 11.1:1 87.5mm
Blueprint head studs package

Parts planned to buy for the setup:
Blueprint Stage 2+ Billet Cams
OEM Honda Main/Rod bearings
Hybrid Racing timing chain tensioner upgrade
DC5R Flywheel 11lb-ish (or equivalent)
Innovative 75A mounts
Adding more parts to the list as they come to mind...

Is this gonna be all motor or boosted? That should help you determine what pistons you need.

Why do you want a new crank?

he is very indecisive. but as of now it's a n/a build. that he is tryin to be cheap in certain area's of it.

sounds pretty good. you keeping the 5 speed?

Sorry, I mean the crank I have is going to be machined by blueprint. My bad.
I personally had supercharger in mind with somewhat high compression but after doing some research I found that the Kraftwerks SC efficiently produces power better than the JRSC. The drawback is that the Kraftwerks takes the place of your A/C and considering I live in Florida, that's a no can do. So I'm sorta in a bind as to which way I want to go. I'm definitely putting a power adder but it just seems everyone and their grandmother is going turbo and even then I love to autocross so a big high HP turbo setup would hurt my times than help. Right now I'm heavily thinking about supercharging it but want to get the best bang for my buck.

Yes, I'm keeping the 5 speed

are u sure about the Junk2 cams? Maybe the new versions are corrected but nothing good about them were heard of. Don't forget about the CRV bracket n KPRO. And you have to pay me tax cuz I'll be protecting you from bad guys. J/K.

Kpro and the bracket have already been taken care of. As for the cams, I feel I'll be fine since the valvetrain will be strong enough to handle it. And also any other brand of stage 2/3 cams are WAY out of my price range.

i think it wasn't about the valvetrain. It was that the flaw of the cam design or lot of cams were faulty causing chain slap(when rotating the crank, the chain becomes loose and jumps) watch it on youtube for a clear explaination. I do like the junk2 fuel rail and 74mm throttle body, but I said to myself that 100% no junk2.

The new skunk2 stage 3 cams are fine as long as he buys the skunk2 tensioner or the hybrid. Get higher compression. With stage 3 cams and flat face valves its an all motor build. You can do nitrous though. 12.1:1 compression would be ideal.

I thought about doing the really high compression, but I don't want to risk it with such aggressive cams and the high domed pistons and if I were to ever have valve lash that I could potentially risk bending valves from piston to valve contact. Also, I've had my fun with nitrous and turbo before, but never had a supercharged car, and I've seen the videos and was really stoked about possibly experiencing that with this build.

I thought about havin the crank machined but then decided to go with the TSX crank instead but that crank looks pretty new not something with 40k miles on it.

With stage 3 cams you need lots of compression for them to make power. If you are doing some type of fi do not even bother with the stage 3 cams. Tsx pistons and rods would not be a bad idea. You would have oem reliability with beefier parts than stock K24A1 and 10.5:1 compression.

I feel you with the OEM reliability setup, but I'm one for not using used OEM parts. Did it before and nothing good ever came from it. And the money I'd be spending on buying new pistons and rods from the dealership, I can buy aftermarket forged rods and pistons. As far as compression, I did some more research and decided to go with the 12.5 Wiseco's instead.

you can boost on 12.5 youll just need to run either e85 or some type of high octane fuel ie 100oct, 105, etc.

great build, putting that head on the motor alone would make great power n/a, but built would be insane.

i hope your going to get a full cnc job on the head, but i think a basic 3 angle valve job would suffice.

looks promising. dont forget kpro. wouldnt do all of that and forget. keep us updated

I've had K-Pro for almost a year now, it was the second mod I bought.

As far as the cylinder head goes, I'm potentially looking towards a local shop cleaning the head up, checking it for any type of damage/warped areas, etc. If the price difference between them and Blueprint is negligible, I'm just going to spend the little extra coin and ship it off to them.

Most likely before the end of next year, I'll be purchasing the Kraftwerks Rotrex kit and wait it out until they release the bracket to mount where the idler pulley goes instead of the A/C compressor. Planning to run the C38-61 charger.

Everyone say Bye-Bye to my cylinder head...off it goes to the Blueprint Racing Boot camp to join all the other little cylinder heads to train and be badass. I'm going to be such a proud dad (lol...)

I packed it a little more. What do you guys think? Can it handle the abuse of UPS/FedEx employees? I protected it like a tank, lol. And yes, that is a pillow. I'm covering its ASSets , literally.
