....we all know how popular these filters but are they as good as it's claimed to be?

last week I use for the first time a Hamp filter after an oil change. I have a good oil pressure gauge with good readings and never had any readings problems with it. anyway, when I first start the car the oil pressure go mad over the scale and even when the engine was getting a lot of fluctuations  everything from 4 to 10+ bar.

I took the car for a short 1km test and I was still got crazy oil pressure readings
First I blamed the oil pressure gauge which worked perfectly until then.....even so I checked all electrical connections and eveything was ok.

...so I remove the Hamp filter and put another one  Same problem AGAIN! crazy oil pressure fluctuations...

...so I remove this one too and put an OEM Honda one. Surprize , the readings turned to NORMAL. no fluctuations just good readings!

so we know that the Hamp filter use a softer spring rate for the relief valve and a "different" shape filter element. I found that the Hamp relief valve spring is soo soft that will open (and bypass the filter) at a minimal pressure raise in the system. (vtec and before vtec point with a racing oil, could start etc)
This is good cause it will provide a good oil flow but will create pressure fluctuations....

IMHO, the Hamp filter element is designed that way to work with the relief valve open...

what about the filter element? the filter is loosing particules....remeber it was used just 1km!

is this ok? how this filter will look after 4000km?

here is the filter of an french (Purflux) top quality OEM Honda filter which was used for cca 5000 km. (I had to break it appart to see how is on the inside)
no filter element disintegration....

the Hamp that I cut is a H1540-RTA-505 - MADE IN USA (not a H1540-PLC-505 - MADE IN JAPAN).

the manufacture claims that the Hamp filters are using a unique release valve that dynamically adjusts to the conditions within the filter to keep the flow and pressure constant.
On my system (46.000 km perfect condition K20A2, oil changes very 5000 km with only double ester Motul V300 power 5W 40) was certainly not constant...

the manufacture also claim that the filter element is high performance with unique carbon chemistry to provide excellent filtration effeciency....

This?

an oil filter is supposed to retain the particules not to generate them....

In the end, please I have two questions?

The Hamp filter is well built and YES will provide a lot more pressure and flow that a normal one but will generate a lot of pressure fluctuations:

How good are those pressure fluctuation for the engine?

What do you think about the filter element?

....and by the way...found any similarities with the Honda OEM 15400-PLM-A01? (left side)

i just think they are over priced for what they are....unless your engine is some crazy hardcore shit then id look into "better filters". ive always used another brand which makes filters for honda (made in japan stuff). Its identical to hondas oem filters. Same shape, color, ridges, even text. Except hondas have a "H" logo on them. Its a fraction of what honda would charge. I think my cost is about $3-4cad vs honda would be around $8-10cad
