So, after the car sits for a while and I move it or if I turn the wheel too hard, occasionally I will get a popping noise and will get a feeling in the steering wheel much like you get when you pop a joint. My dad tells me that his Volvo 840 did this and it was caused by a CV joint going bad. I have jacked the front of the car up and felt around and nothing in the steering, drivetrain, or suspension felt loose. Something is loose somewhere, anyone else ever experienced this symptom?

check your control arm bushings.

Kinda sounds like the cv joint is going bad. You can also check the lca bushings.

Well, my dad were able to actually get the car up high enough to get under it (spare jack won't really do that and that's all I had earlier), and sure enough the right CV joint is sliding back forth about a quarter inch. Hoo boy.
