View Full Version : Engine runs way too fast!

Anyone else notice this?
My engine RPM's are already at 4100 at only 80 m.ph. (at 60 its already at 3000). This can't be good for highway fuel economy! I understand its probably geared for decent acceleration even in 5th but sometimes I just want to cruise and let it sip instead of gulp:) . Comments?

Yea, I wish we had a six speed up in the Si's. I typically drive a lot faster than that on the highway, so it's even more a problem for me.

Like 22 mpg....half city, half highway. 32 mpg? Sounds a bit high. The sticker doesen't even have the estimate that high.

Maybe the stop and go of South Florida commuting is taking its toll. Or maybe its that I love that throttle a bit too much.

Ah, I get your name now! Much of my driving is city, so that's probably why....and like I said....S. Florida.... You can hear i-vtec engage with the CAI?

the crossover isnt as drastic as in my friends b16 del sol, but yeah you can hear it. it finally sounds like a vtec motor

Ok, I think we've lost sight of my original question - are these engines supposed to be running this fast at highway speeds or is it that mine has a problem? I mean none of my other cars were doing over 4000 RPM's at 80 m.p.h. - is anyone else experiencing this?

Yea man, my car is at that RPM at 80ish miles per hour. Your car is fine. ;)

I have had many Hondas..... but i noticed that my SI get terrible gas miliage.. its just geared differently... if they had a 6th gear it would probably get like 36-40 mpg....... but hey its fast and it sounds good...... all though i cant wait to get an intake....i heard they scream!!!!!!!!!1:o

I thought my car had a problem with it at first too with the car revving pretty fast but I guess according to you guys its normal, I wish there was a sixth gear so bad though.

Yeah, but if there was a sixth gear we'd be paying more for it. I'm happy with the close ratio 5-speed. I really like the in-gear acceleration that the low 5th gives. You can pass on the highway without downshifting. I'd rather the gears were so close than have them too far apart. :)

Heh I think instead of motor swaps, the thing for the si is gonna be tranmission swaps, import the 6speed typer tranny.

Now were talking. I think that and a JRSC would make our humble little Si's into Type R eaterz. :D

i have an 88 crx si and it sings at 3500 on the highway at 70mph and its lasted 13 years :) i'm sure your car will survive...

Just get a vtech controler and raise the rpm where the vtech kicks in. That way when you're on the freeway, you're not cruising in vtech and you'll get better gas mileage. :)

I get bad gas mileage. i gotta stop xlr8-ting (pun is intended).

i get like prob 20

Same here. I fear my gas mileage will get even worse once I get my AEM intake. :(

Hondas are cool cuz u can cruise at 4500 rpms and the engine will last 200,000 miles or more

Hey I love the gas mileage compared to last car got like 9 miles to gallon LMFAO about that... lookin for intake but seems to be nuthin out yet... Help needs to buy performance stuff

say did any one max out their car on the freeway?? cuz i hitted 130 at 6200......and it wont even go any fast it just slowly moves
and is reving up faster mean faster accel?? cuz fock my 1st gear max out at 30.and secon is 45 then 3rd is80 and fourth is 100... is that good.....?? cuz the old yrs si 1st gear go up to 40 right??

SiCivic2k2
07-02-2002, 05:28 AM
02CivicSI-VTEC: 2nd gear should go higher than 45mph. Mine goes to about 55-60. Mine also tops out at 130, so no problems there. Jesse02SI: AEM and IJEN both have a cold air intake out for our cars. Check out NOPI.com for the injen one and look around on e-bay for the AEM.

Dude. Slow down and take a breath before you type. I know I can hit 60 in second gear (did it last night) though it is basicly on the red line at that point. I'm sure the gear ratios are the same in all SIs released in the states. If you can't hit 60 or darn close then I'd have to guess that your clutch may be slipping or something else is wrong.

cuz i hitted 130 at 6200 The Stocker 2k2 Si is supposed to do 125 tops. I had it in the low 120's and that was about all it wanted to do. It *was* hot out, and it only had about 300 miles on it, so I'll take that into consideration. But the R&T guys can do anything they want and they got it to 125 radar'd. Hey 02CivicSI-VTEC, do you have any mods on your car?

Hondatech

Think about it this way. When you're in gear, there is a solid linkage between the engine and the ground. The ONLY two things that can slip in a manual drivetrain are the clutch and the wheels, So as long as your clutch is biting hard, and you're not smoking off your tires, everything is operating at the speed it should :) the 99-00 Si/SiR was geared even higher in fifth then ours were. (3500-3600 at 60 mph vs. 3100 for the EP)

Mechanic

Just a couple of thoughts: I wouldn't be a bit concerned about the (relatively) high RPM at highway speeds. As others have stated, all the Si's going back to the very first ones, were and are geared "short" (high transaxle ratio) for performance. If they were geared "long," like a LX or EX, it would add at least a full second to the 0-60 time and the car would feel really sluggish at higher speeds. Also, I seem to recall that my '90 and '91 Si's turned 3500 at 70, and I still consistently got 38 mpg, and cars performed flawlessly. The 2002 weighs a lot more than the earlier models, but unless you drive yours like you stole it, I can't imagine it won't get a least 30 mpg.

Finally, adding the 6th speed tranny from the Type R won't cut the RPM at speed. Stated differently, the additional gear is not an overdrive ratio. The 6th speed tranny exists not to improve mileage or adding a cruising gear, but rather to give the enthusiast more options (gears) to keep the engine in an optimum RPM range. That and an additional 40 horses make the Type R a particularly desirable piece. (And, boy, do I wish it were available now!)

but the 99-00 Si's had a 8k redline. We only have like a 6700 redline.

So proportionally its about the same. Either way this is a bit of a moot point. The only solution to get a lower rev is to do some work to the tranny and it'd most likely have to be custom.
