I just bought a 02 Honda civic Si(SIR in Canada)
I'm ready to re-sell it, taking some loses as I didn't know it was so TERRIBLE on gas.
City driving I get about 300-350km(190-220 miles) a tank,
Highway about 400-425(250-265 miles) a tank

This is with shifting in-between 2,500-3,000 rpm and if on the highway I drive 90km/h (56mph)

The car has 88,000 km on it (54,000miles) and its bone stock.
Got the air filter and brand new NGK IR plugs.
I even got one of those fuel injector cleaners for the gas tank.

Is the mileage really that bad? If there is a solution, please let me know or this thing is going on craigslist/kijiji.

Thanks!

How is the alignent? Tire condition?

Try resetting the ECU and doing a Idle relearn. Pull the ECU/FI fuse in the underhood fusebox for 1 minute, then start the engine and when at operating temps(easiest to warm up first before pulling the fuse), hold the revs at 3K for 3 minutes, turn ALL electrical off, that means heater fan to off, stereo off, doors closed and interior lights off, do not move the steering wheel, do not apply the brakes, etc. If during this 3 minutes the cooling fan turns on, just stop the 3 minute count and continue the count when the fan turns off.

Also with that age it couldnt hurt at all to have the injectors properly cleaned, and the stuff you add to the tank just doesnt cut it.

damn sorry to hear dude... i get around 350miles/tank (10 gallons or so)
check your tire pressure and try to get your injectors clean. (professionally)

are you lugging around alot of weight inside the car? i remember when I took my ep3 to job sites having all the power tools, my work bag and safety equipment... my mileage took a hit.

I'll look around to getting the injectors professionally cleaned and maybe I should change the ail filter, last I checked it had fucking bugs in it.
Thanks

So, out of all the cars out there, you bought an Ep3 for milage?? Why not go buy a Fit or hybrid. It's like your trying to slay a dragon with a dull kitchen knife. Not to say it couldn't be done, but there are way better tools for the job. Go put yourself on Craiglist. Or better yet, go buy an Insight, and put a pretty little pink "coexist" bumper sticker on it.

I get about 500km with 75% city, a/c on most of the time.

I get between 25 and 28mpg since I usually only drive 1-3 miles at a time and gun it more than I should. Im placing bets on low tire pressure or bad alignment as the cause of your mileage woes.

The left shock in the back squeeks I believe and how much should a alignment cost me in Canada?

i usually get between 23~28 with majority being around 25/6 a tank. though a friend of mine gets around 32 consistantly

What did you buy the EP for? Speed?
Sounds like your trying to cook a turkey with a bic lighter.

With my k20a2.5 i'm getting 28-29mpgs city

Wow, I thought I had it bad but I guess I was wrong. I average about 260 miles to the tank with full bolt ons. Hope you figure it out.

My EP3 is well modified, it is N/A and put down 248whp and gets 36-38mpg on the highway and 24-26 around town as long as I dont get on it, then the mileage drops significantly.

With the A3 the best mileage I got seldom exceeded 24mpg. It is not geared correctly to obtain optimum mileage at 65+, optimum mileage is obtained around 45-50mph.

I agree, Honda should have given the EP a different transmission. That chould have made the EP better on the Highway then the EX model.

I think the Si is fine the way it is. I bought the car for better performance on the road and not for MPG (though it is not that bad). It's not the fastest car on the street but I like it the way it is. It's a balance between the two.

But with just a change to a 02'-04' typeS trans you will gain in both areas, and produce less strain on the engine on the highway, and if you swap in the TSX 6th the highway manners get even better. Best to also add in Kpro and a LSD.

We did that on a base RSX and he gained almost 18% better fuel economy as well as a significantly lower 1/4 mile E.T., not too mention the reduction in revs at highway speed gets the exhaust out of the drone zone.

How much is that work?

talonXracer

That would depend on if you do the work or not, what you pay for a trans and parts, new or used Kpro etc.

I'ma sell my car for a $2,000 lost and call it a day and buy a shitbox.. I thought these things were suppose to get 30mpg on the highway, I get like 22mpg highway driving 90km/h I'm pissed

20 bucks in the tank on "E" will get be about 250miles with ease. I got a A3 with reflash,I/H/E and the LSD DC-R tranny...In sixth i sit roughly about 4k at 60mph

EDIT:It's 4k at 75mph not 60mph my bad..

I get 31mpg city/highway. I actually get less MPG on the freeway than driving in the main roads.

But for those with really shitty highway MPGs, you should get your car checked. Might need a tune up or something.

There are a lot of variables in your fuel economy. If it's that bad, are you due for a valve lash adjustment (about 100k miles), spark plugs, do you change your oil on time, air filter, check the air in your tires, have a decent alignment, balanced wheels, rotate your tires, drive through lots of stop and go traffic, use your a/c often, are those 14 miles one way or total? Short trips give you worse gas mileage since your engine is least efficient until it warms up. I used to drive 2 miles to work. On weeks where I worked a lot and didnt really drive around much my gas mileage would plummet to about 23 since the car was just barely getting warm and going into closed loop when I shut off the car.

I drove 16,000 miles in my 02 si this summer all over and around the country. I mostly filled up with 89 and was generally getting about 30 mpg when I stayed at about 70 or less. My mpg would go down to about 26 when I maintained 80 until I got to the parts of the country that have 93 pump gas for cheaper than 87 is here in CA. I was paying like $2.70 for 93 while my buddy was paying $3.13 for 87 octane. (God bless the South!) Then I was getting 30-34mpg while going between 80-100mph. I think these cars like the expensive stuff.

Did you first do any indepth reasearch into the vehicle? BUT for less than what you plan on loosing you could put that into the EP3 and get your better fuel economy

See, the gearing again is all wrong for highway mileage, with the 4.3fd (I would like to drop to 4.0fd) and the TSX 6th gear I sit under 3500rpm at 65mph, well out of the drone zone. Also I get better fuel economy in the winter with the snowtires205/65/16, vrs the summer 225/45/17.

i do 14miles total a day. not much of stop and go just your typical lights on a 35mph streets with barely any traffic. my car does have 112k miles on it. i do change my own oil and im due for another one so hopefully that helps. how do i do a valve lash adjustment? tires are new, never use ac, and i always warm up my car b4 i drive it. hopefully i can get better milage once i change my oil and get that valve lash adjustment done.

Im in the same boat...Seem's to me like city driving I am getting better fuel consumption than when I drive it on the highway. My ep3 has 120,000km and the oil gets changed regularly. Air filter is good, tires checked almost everyday, I drive about 15km one way to work so the engine has more than enough time to warm up. What are your recommendations for my situation? Also, I am due for an oil change next month, what brand of oil should I use?

I heard Mobil 1 is the most commonly used. I tried Napa Synthetic, I don't feel much of a difference with just normal oil (nonsynthetic).

I use Mobil 1, although it's not like I have anything against other oils. Except conventional penzoil, that stuff is awful.

Do EP3s have trip meter? I tried to reset by pressing the right knob on the cluster, but nothing happens. It only displays the mileage. Is mine broken?

His issue is that when he presses it, it won't change to "Trip A" or "B". No use of holding it down if it doesn't even switch out of the mileage.

If you are getting less then 25mpgs and are not driving like you stole the car, then there is something wrong with it. It's plan and simple. The K series motor is an amazing motor. You need to look at the Plugs

You're right, no need to hold down. I kept trying pressing and holding down, finally it worked, but not always. Took out the cluster and noticed that the back piece is not holding tight with all the clips. After I put it back and it worked. Now, the cluster looks dark at some areas because couple of the bulbs went out.
