So after driving my car on all seasons 2 winters ago and putting it away last winter ive decided to take it out for this winter, only to run into the issue of what winter tire setup to go with. I will be running stock rims at 205/55/16 size. Ive done some research and have come up with 3 tires. Recommendations ?

Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3
Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D
Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3

I wouldnt run any of those, I have run FireStone WinterForce with studs and without, 205/55/16 on steelies and they have been about the best.

You can eliminate the Dunlop M3's because they are discontinued and the 3D is their replacement... It also depends on what type of winter tire you're after. Dedicated snow/ice or winter performance. I just bought a pair of Pirelli Sottozeros 205/55/16 for my stock wheels from Tirerack. $90 each! With shipping they were $205 to my door. They are more like a burly all-season than a real snow tire, but they should be perfect for 98% of my winter needs. Good luck. You may need to do a little more research.

Bridgestone Blizzaks in the factory size. WS70s are the newest generation, but if you have a Firestone store around you might be able to get WS60s for less if they can still get some..

Do Bridgestone Blizzak Tires Live up to Their Reputation?
The Tire Rack has been the largest single source of Blizzak studless winter tires in the United States since their introduction in 1993. We have tested them on ice and in the snow, as well as driven on them through South Bend, Indiana's "mild" and "wild" winters. We have found that no All-Season tire or other winter tire has matched the Blizzak's confidence-inspiring combination of deep snow, packed snow and ice traction.

In one set of stopping distance tests in Alaska, studded, studless, and all-season tires performed nearly equally on snow, when averaged across several vehicles. On ice, stopping distances for studded tires were 15 percent shorter than for Blizzaks, which in turn were 8 percent shorter than for all-season tires.

In another set of tests in Alaska, studless Blizzak tires offered the best traction performance, especially for braking on both packed snow and ice in comparison to studded tires (which were second) and all-season tires (which were last).

I have run the Blizzacks and also the WinterForce without studs and in deep snow(anything over 2-3") the Winterforce wins hands down. Put the studs in the Winterforce and there isnt a tire that can keep up in the winter!

I have the 5s with studs on steelies. They're the best.

Just bought hakka 7`s for the front on mine, 215/45-17, They are pricey, but def worth it :)

They score a a little lower than contentinal contiice contact(those two are closest to each other and score almost the same in tests done for diffrent car owners organizations in scandinavia) on braking on wet asfalt and on noise. But the nokians are a little better on snow and ice. So it basicly is choosing between diffrent qualities. My cars exahaust is so noisy, so a little tire noise on top dosent make the big diffrence.. hehe Braking length on asfalt sucks, or is so much worse than summer tyres, anyways, so you have to change your driving style quite a bit anyways..
