I pulled this code, which means I need a new cat obviously. I took my car to a repair shop to get a quote for a replacement. They wanted 1300 to replace it. The mechanic told me I needed a California legal converter.. but I live in Arizona.. So is he bsing me or was he telling the truth. I really don't want to spend 1300 if I dont have to. please help!!

I say get a new mechanic.....and while your at it you can pick up a used cat converter here for about 150....I sold mine for 150 shipped.....or you can buy a raceheader and use the cel eliminator......or spend even less and get a test pipe with the cel eliminator.

i thought installing a used cat was "illegal?"

Say's who? If it functions fine, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to run a used cat.

correct me if im wrong but dont the vibrant race headers have a "cat" on them? if so that would be your best bet i would say....probably for half the price of what your mechanic would charge

I think CRSX was selling the vibrant racer header with a high flow cat combo.. I just tried searching on CRSX but I don't think they carry it anymore.

this should be in the engine section...youll get better response there. posting in the correct spot not only helps the mods cuase it stays organized..but to people searching for the issue.

please be conscience of where you post.

I think what the mechanic meant was to get a 50 state legal cat. But I don't know how the laws in Arizona are so you might want to check up on that. On the other hand, high flow cats are a 50/50 chance when it comes to passing smog.
