My front lower balljoints need replacing
I plan on renting the press from autozone, but I was wondering if I would have to take the whole knuckle off to use it? Really don't feel like fighting with a spindle nut
Thanks in advance

The boot on one is gone and has been for some time, it is worn, rusted, and creaky
the other one is ripped as well so i figured i'd replace them as a set while I have the tool handy

i didn't know that either. is it a free or paid rental? i know advance auto has free rental on tools. not sure if they have a press though.

i need to do this too so any other info would be great.

The knuckle doesnt have to be removed, BUT the spindle nut HAS to be removed as the axle has to come out, the ball joint will not clear the CV joint when it is being pressed in or out.

alot of places liek autozone or oreillys do loaner tool programs...u jus pay a deposit which is 100% refundable after ur done with the tool usually the deposit is the price for the tool

Main dealerships will only sell you a complete lower arm, knuckle and ball joint for the replacement of the lower ball joint,Is there somewhere else to buy separately?

Advance Auto will have the ball joints separately. I'm sure Autozone will too. If you want better quality, you can find them online.

Example: http://www.clubrsx.com/clubep3/BCS-BJP1-H004.html

There are other places, you just have to search.

That seperates the ball joint from the lower control arm, but doesn't remove the ball joint from the knuckle.
It's a weird C-Clamp looking tool that presses them in an out. (http://www.harborfreight.com/3-in-1-ball-joint-u-joint-c-frame-press-service-kit-38335.html)

I don't really know if the ball joints for the Si will work in the Type-R, and I wouldn't assume either. Maybe someone else can chime in who knows.

I just came back from the dealer after having my mechanic check a few things. Ball joints need replacing. Honda only sells the ball joint with the whole knuckle. You need to buy the the whole knuckle with ball joint if you want oem replacement.

Apparently, there is a TSP that applies to 2001-2005 Civic (except 3-Door) for Lower Ball Joint Replacement and now you can buy just the ball joint part #51220-S5A-305. What kind of bs is that, except 3-Door!!!! It was announced in 2004 though.

Has anyone figured out a solution to get that oem ball joint without the knuckle??

yeah, buy the knuckle. lol. I did my pass side last year, and I had to buy the whole damn knuckle from Honda. It was that or nothing. Then those damn bastards kept delivering a knuckle for a non-si, which has smaller bolt holes for the strut, which I learned when about finished with the job! 3 times they brought the wrong part. Hope your Honda dealership isn't as retarded as mine. LOL!!!
