Buddy has an ep and he bought it from a guy who was the 2nd owner. He knew it had an aem v2 intake, then later saw it had a comptech header and he put in an exedy clutch and light fly wheel set up. I drove it last night and it sounds like it has vtec cross over around 5500rpms. It only revs to about 7100 however. I did 2 test runs but in the same spot going up a slight slope I couldnt hear a crossover. Externals look the same, block is k20a3, there is no kpro but seems a lot quicker then my old i/rh/e/kpro'd a3 that I last drove a year ago. Anybody have any ideas? I told him to take it to a dyno and we could see if his numbers are up there or about the same as mine. Also, how do i change the forum set up back to how it used to be? I dislike the new format. Thanks.

This is not uncommon with the A3. There is a natural resonance at around 5500 that does change the sound, and you do pick up a little acceleration, but you don't have VTEC or anything like it.

thats the thing, I was skeptical myself when he told me. We unhooked the ecu, no taps or signs of kpro/reflash. Block says k20a3 and still is a 5 speed tranny with the 02 3rd gear grind. I don't have a clue whats up with it.

Oh, and you aren't really revving to 7100. The EP's tachometer is notoriously inaccurate at higher revs. So even though you see 7100 or so on the tach the motor is just spinning to 6800

Yea I was aware of the rpm's being a little off, just mentioned it because of where the "vtec" occured and where I stopped revving according to the gauge. I will let him know what you guys said about the sound because sometimes it did it and sometimes it didnt. I don't daily drive his car or anyting , only had a few minutes with it. Thanks guys! Lightweight flywheels ftw i suppose

For the "Crossover" sound at 5500rpm I do get the same thing on my stock A3 with AEMv2, pretty sweet sound makes me feel like I have Vtec, but I don't :(

Edit: Maybe it has Reflash in it? That would explain the power with i/rh/e...

Take the valve cover off and see if it has 3 lobe cams?

Sounds about right. What is visible to know it has reflash? Still revs to stock rev limit though but feels quicker then my a3.

Call or send an email to hondata. Give them the ECU serial and they will let you know.

Open up the VC to look, check the ECU for a USB port, and most of all take it out for a second impression ;]

U shouldn't have an issue telling if there's a crossover. An a3 and any real vtec engine the sound is like apples and oranges. Besides if that thing had a vtec head there's no way it would run properly on a stock ecu. And since u said it don't have kpro pretty obvious is a a3. And on a reflash the a3 reflash brings up the revs to 7700 I believe and a type s reflash goes to 8600 I think. U said ur at 7100. Stock tac read higher. Mine read 7100 too when I had an a3... sorry but its just a plain a3

Daaaaamn. He took the whole motor out just to see if the cams had 3 lobe? Someone put some serious wrench time in lol

Maybe that slight pull you are hearing and pulling is the peak torque?

i've been told that small rims and a lightweight fly makes cars feel like a whole new car.

Haha, check BOTH cams......and if you ask, YES that is a factory head. Most likely an impossible scenario for this car, but K-series with these heads had a 6800rpm limit which on our tach would read 7100-7200.

What is that motor? K20? K24?

It's an odd ball first gen K-series. They supposedly came in some of the first gen Honda Streams, and were also available in the Australian Integra Type S.

They put out decent power if you can find one. With tuning one put out over 200whp with CAI/RH/E in an EM2 .

Couple of more pics...

Here's the dynosheet, 201whp with CAI/RH/E along with Kpro....

Notice if you will on the dyno sheet the VTEC crossover at 5500rpms.

After some searching around I tracked down the list that Sport Compact Car published.

4913

So it MAY be possible, but it's HIGHLY improbable.

Wow a K20a that made only 160hp!
