Hi, looking to add plus one sized rims to my ep3 now. OEM offset is 45, I've found a set I like Drag DR-9's in gold but the offset is 40. I've already been out to the car and can't quite get myself to pull the trigger on if they'll fit correctly or not, strut rubbing etc. Tires will be the 205/55/17's. Think I'll have a problem with these, either with rubbing on the strut or fenders? I haven't lowered the car yet and will likely do so afterwards 1 to 1.5 inches that's all. I'm hoping they won't stick out past the fenders either ;)

Thanks for reading and yes I did search on this and couldn't get a straight answer. Probably doesn't matter much as I've seen offsets from 38 to 45 on tirerack for my car but wanted to double check.

You're fine. Don't get a 205/55 tire. Get a 215/45 or a 225/45. For future reference there is an entire thread dedicated to wheel and tire fitment.

they won't stick out side of the fenders. My car came with 18x7.5 rims with offset of 45 and they were still flush

205/45 will look pretty nice with a 40 offset
should tuck enough to not need a fender roll
shouldn't have problem with strut rub either
This also is the closest option you have to keeping the stock diameter.

205/40 will give you a little better acceleration and reduce rotational weight. Also, less worries about rubbing.

205/40? That's going to look terrible unless he slams his car. Also whats the point of getting wider wheels if you're not getting wider tires? He needs a 215/45 minimum or a 225/45 if he wants some extra tire.

Well it's been years since I have ever larger tires/rims on a car. I went to tirerack.com and picked the wheel size the tire options for 17" rims were 205/50/17

I just went back again and by just choosing tires I see the 215/45/17 option now. Now I'm confused, wider tire, shorter sidewall.

I just ordered them with the 205/50/17 tires.

Colin where is this thread? Is it a organized chart that lists wheel sizes and tire sizes? Also why not a 205/50/17?

I live in New England so I'm not going to be "slamming" my car it's just not functional at all up here.

Called the tire shop back and basically got talked over at every turn to explain that the 205/50/17's are the wrong ones and I need 215/45/17. I tried to get in touch with the person I ordered from who seemed to know his stuff but I got stuck with el'douce salesguy who said I'm getting 225/45/17's and that's as close to factory height as they could get.

Now I know why I stopped messing with cars/modifying, the BS you have to put up with, and the ego's on some people... I wanted to say to him, it's OE, just put on 215/45/17 and call it a day, he just couldn't get it through his head apparently.

So when they come in and they're the wrong size tire, I reject the order, lol. Good thing we're not trying to cure cancer huh ;)

205/45/17 is the closest to factory tire diameter
if you're only dropping moderately do as colin. recommended. 225/45 is gonna be the best option

Ok that's what the sales guy was saying I am going to be getting, so hope all goes well in the coming weeks when they finally arrive. Thanks all for the help and solid info! Better to go into battle with some ammo than none at all!

http://www.ephatch.com/forum/showthread.php?53564-New-Wheel-Tire-Size-thread/page36.

Also, here is a nifty wheel / tire calculator - http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp, and according to this whatsvtec is wrong and does not know what he's talking about. 205/45 is NOT the closest to stock.

Stock : 205/55/16 - 24.9" diameter x 8.1" section width

205/40/17 - 23.5" diameter x 8.1" section width
205/45/17 - 24.3" diameter x 8.1" section width
215/45/17 - 24.6" diameter x 8.5" section width
225/45/17 - 25" diameter x 8.9" section width

You're getting wider wheels, get a wider tire. Also, getting a smaller diameter tire is going to look rediculous with your mild drop. You want to fill the wheel well the best you can, and with the options above your best bet is a 225/45.

If he's 02/03 stock is 195/60-15

The OD between 02/03 and 04/05 is different...for an 02/03 running 16s you run a 205/50/16 to maintain stock OD

For an 02/03 stock OD is 24.2
and a 205/45-17 is 24.3

so colin, if he's 02/03 you're wrong, if he's 04/05 you're right :mwink:

I always use this tire calculator
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

And this wheel/ tire comparison
http://www.willtheyfit.com/

Also, with 225s and a +40 offset he WILL rub in the rear on bumps if hes lowered 1.5" or more without a fender roll or camber

he said he's plus sizing his wheels, so I assumed he has an 04/05 lol

i had 205/40's on 17x7. and imo, far from terrible looking.http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs762.ash1/165384_495116184525_633069525_5850830_4779320_n.jp g

Don't worry
It's not functional anywhere.

You'll rub when you drop without camber and/or a roll

Ah now I like this rig ----^ Sorry not trying to sidetrack the post. Just waiting now for the call saying that my rims/tires have arrived and then go from there.

And even though I said I wouldn't, I'll be damned if I did not start looking at tokico blues and their spring combos for a modest drop. It's like a disease that never leaves you even after 10 years or so of not doing anything ;)

All done. The tires I ordered got shipped to the wrong shop and they offered me a set of Toyo proxies instead and I went with those as I have had them in the past.

They were all confused on tire size still, stating their calculator did not give them the correct size. I told them 225/45/17, so far so good. Seems sad that the tire shop couldn't get it together and ended up going with what I said rather than the opposite. Either way everyone was nice and helpful. Since I'm going with Tokico blue struts and their 1" lowering springs I should be fine in the rear with rubbing, if not, I'll burn off the rubber I have now then go for a less wide tire.

1 inch drop you should be good without a roll. Maybe on serious bumps.

kaotik78

Is rolling the inner fender basically due to the little bit of metal in the fender like this ---> L

Hammer it up and you get this ---> |

Negative camber in the arse end would eliminate the rubbing if I go over some serious bumps. I've gotta go out in the garage and take another look to see what if any issue I could have if lowering it now.

Yeah 1" drop will be max for the 225's. I wonder how even 205's let alone 215's can fit under there without rolling the rear fenders. We'll see, but I have to say thanks to everyone who chimed in to help me!
