i have a 2002 civic si

just have to do valve adjustment, and fill fluids and i might finally have this car back on the road...

There are several ways to go about filling the trans. Using a piece of tubing and a funnel usually ends up making a mess, LOL I have found several different pump designs that work. that way you can be right there and keep the short hose in the fill hole on the drivers end of the trans. I have also removed the VSS and filled it there.

Vehicle speed sensor, it is located on the rear of the trans on top of the diff.

^this! i prefer this method bc theres less of a mess and i dont have to replace the crush washers as often

yeah, it is a far larger opening and is on top. It is open from there right down to the bottom of the trans right next to the differential. Just make sure to really clean the area before pulling the VSS. The backside of the engine/trans sees alot of debris.

What size socket would one need to remove that?

I think it's a twist clip.

But how high do you fill it? From the fill bolt, it's until the fluid is level with the hole. Just put less that 2 quarts in?

1.7 quarts per the manual I do believe.

Whenever the fill hole is used, almost EVERY time the trans is improperly filled, this occurs because the majority of time the front end has to be jacked up to access the drain/fill plugs and the improper level is maintained.

^ This. DON'T FORGET to lower the jacks to level out the car while the drain plug is off. I even tried jacking my rear end up, but I don't think anything but a few extra drops drained.

The last time I did mine, I was on Skunk2's lift and at a measured 1.6L, it started to pour out of the fill hole. IDK exactly why, but I think it's because, no matter what, you can't get every drop to drain. I wanted to use their bent nozzles to run compressed air throughout, buy I was in a hurry...

If you're going to fill it from the VSS port, it's probably be a good idea to leave the fill plug unscrewed so you can just fill it to the drain plugs hole. It's the easiest, most effective way to know when to "say when."

The last time I changed the tranny oil in my old car, I used a huge plastic pitcher from the dollar store to measure how much fluid came out so I know how much to put back in!

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but I am getting ready to do this and just want to clairfy.

-Drain fluid from normal drain plug.
-Put plug back in.
-Remove fill plug
-Remove VSS
-Fill tranny fluid (1.7 Quarts) through VSS hole with long funnel
-Fill till it starts to barely drip out of fill plug
-Replace fill plug
-Put VSS back in
-Done?

Thanks in advance, first time I will be chaging tranny fluid on a honda, done it a couple times on my MR2, but a little more accessible in that car.

^^ Thanks,

now I currently have a bottle of amsoil synchromesh, I believe its 75w-90 I will check in a few, from when I had bought it for an ex's 06' civic si. I was going to mix that with Honda MTF, basically do half and half, is this a good idea? Either way I would like to do half synchromesh of some type, as that's what I run in my MR2 and its perfect.

Thanks guys!

Ehhh, I don't know about mixing. I'd either go Honda MTF or Penzoil/GM Synchromesh. I think that Amsoil is a little too thick for our trans, but don't quote me on that.

Honda MTF is the best.
