So my rear view mirror fell off yesterday. OK, that happens a lot in the summer...but mine came off with the glass still attached. About a 1/4 inch of glass was removed from the windshield and remained on the rear view. Apparently the previous owner used superglue at some point to reattach the rear view, this is why you don't do that.

might have not been superglue as most places sell glue just for this reason....but im sure its pretty much the same stuff

The glue used to attach the metal lug is in fact SUPERGLUE ! ! !

I have NEVER, EVER seen a rear view mirror fall off because it is summer or due to heat, LOL, try again!

More than likely the previous owner had been horsing around yanking on the mirror and it broke off a smaller section of glass and he glued it back in.

Set the mirror one time and leave it the f@ck alone!

same thing happened to my dad's Golf; told em to try glue, JB Weld, and double sided tape (all for the lulz) to fix it

JB weld held it---till he made a left turn out of our block; you're never gonna get the mirror back unless:

1. buy a new windshield
2. get a Wink mirror
or
3. get used to not using a rear view mirror

he chose the latter

The mirror glue is different than superglue. I'm replying from my phone so I don't have research to show how exactly. I believe it has to do with the rearview glue having a UV protection that allows minor expansion/contraction due to hot/cold weather. That expansion and contraction over time does cause the adhesive to eventually fail.

The previous owner could have broken it, but there is no way for me tell at this point.
