I own a 97 integra ls 4 door that's automatic. Its mainly our family car since we have a 2 yr old and one on the way. We bought this teg for dirt cheap and ran good for a while till now. We started having over heating issues with it and change thermostat and didn't work, we tried to diagnoss it and finally found out it was a bad headgasket. Well I changed the head gasket along with rebuilding it. Resurfaced it, pressure checked it and also changed the valve seals and so forth. Well got it together and ran good but water in the oil. So we find out the block is cracked so we are going thru a block build to.

So first start off with the motor removal out of the car.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20110915_190746.jpg

Got it hooked up to the hoist.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/100MEDIA36IMAG0016.jpg

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/100MEDIA36IMAG0018-1.jpg

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/100MEDIA36IMAG0025.jpg

Now I got to tearing the block apart and got it apart and started to clean all the parts. Put all bolts and parts in the parts cleaner and got them nice and clean looking brand new. Also got the pistons and sand blasted the tops of them and amazing results.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20110922_012502.jpg

Got pics of all the pistons cleaned and crank cleaned.

I have more to come here in a min, I have tons of pics and stuff so bare with me.

I have been hearing the newer ls motors are easily cracked and fall apart. I use to own a 1st gen integra with the first ls d16a1 and never had a problem out of it. It ran like a boss.

Would like to eventually convert this integra to manual and do lsv in the future and have alittle fun with it though.

So after I got all parts and brackets clean and everything I decided I want to paint some of the brackets and parts. I decided to paint them wrinkle black. Here are some of the parts.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20110925_141436.jpg

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20110925_141348.jpg

Went and picked up the new short block.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20110923_170933-1.jpg

And started the tearing apart of this one as well.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20110923_175715.jpg

Now this block was dirty as shit and so I got a lot of degreaser and a toothbrush to clean it and here is the end result.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20110925_141217.jpg

Got some parts from honda, picked up piston rings, oil pan gasket, oil pump, rear main seal, and oil filter. Also picked up more paint and thermostat with gasket.

Also got timing belt kit in the mail.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20111005_120034.jpg

Next I got to honing the new block, I started off and got some of it done but I was using a cordless drill and the battery died on me.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20110929_175215.jpg

After the battery died I went ahead and decided to take it to get decked and pressure checked before I got it completely done. I got the block back and honed it the rest of the way.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20111012_175715.jpg

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20111012_175657.jpg

After the hone I went and got carb cleaner and cleaned out all of the shavings out of all the cylinders. I also checked the final bore, ptw and piston ring end gap. The ptw spec was .002 and the piston ring end gap spec was .006-.014 and both checked out. Stay tooned for even more coming up.

Now I am at the point where I can start assembling everything so went and picked up new main bearings and rod bearings along with assembly lube and more carb cleaner. I started to use carb cleaner on the pistons, block, and crank to get ready for installation. I sprayed the blocks main bearing oil passages good and installed the main bearings and thrust bearings and lubed them up.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20111013_180455.jpg

Also lubed up the crankshaft.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20111013_180505.jpg

Now I got to put the crankshaft in and checked the crank end play, the spec was .004-.014 and was .006 so it checked ok.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20111013_180724.jpg

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20111013_180719.jpg

Grabbed the main bearing caps and put the bearings on them and lubed them up and also lubed up the bolts and installed them torqueing them down to its specs and also in correct order. Torque specs was 24 ft lbs then 58 ft lbs.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20111013_185901.jpg

Now I got to the pistons but only had time to install one. I got tranni fluid and lubed up the first cylinder really good. I then put the rings on the first piston and positioned them right on the piston and lubed them up with tranni fluid. Got the ring compressor and tightened it down. Put the rod bearing on it and lubed it up. Grapped the connecting rod cap and installed the bearing on it with lube. Then put the rod down through the cylinder with the arrow facing the side of the block the timing belt goes on. Then knocked it down into the cylinder with a rubber mallet. Put the connecting rod cap on and torqued it down to spec. Torque spec was 15 ft lbs then 24 ft lbs.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20111013_194830.jpg

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20111013_194836.jpg

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20111013_195200.jpg

And the wife being crazy lol.

Update on the progress today, I got all pistons in, crank baffle, oil pump and water pump on. First started out with piston 2 and did the same process as the first one, put the rings in order and lubed up with tranni fluid. Put the spring compressor on it and put the bearing on the rod and lubed it up with engine assembly lube. Put tranni fluid in the cylinder and put the rod down into it and hammered it in place and put the rod cap on with the bearing and torqued down to 24 ft lbs. Pics are started with piston 3.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/100MEDIA36IMAG0108.jpg

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/100MEDIA36IMAG0110.jpg

And the finish product of all pistons in.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20111017_184333.jpg

After all pistons where in I got the cranke baffle and put it on and torqued it down to the specs which is 98 in lbs.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/100MEDIA36IMAG0111_2.jpg

Now comes the oil pump, sadly honda didn't provide me with the o ring or the gasket for the oil pump screen. I found a new o ring round the shop so I got to put on the oil pump on. Got the rtv gasket maker and put it on the block and the oil pump and mounted it on. Put all the bolts in and torqued it down to specs. The smaller 10 mm bolts are torqued down to 96 in lbs and the bigger 12 mm bolts are torqued to 17 ft lbs.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20111017_180719.jpg

Next came the water pump, put the rtv gasket maker on the block and the water pump and put the o ring on. Mounted it on and torqued the bolts down to specs which where 106 in lbs.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/teg%20build/IMG_20111017_183959.jpg

And now the finished product for today.

Update for today, went and ordered the oil pick up gasket. Will be here tomorrow. Got the head on today and cams in. Today I put the head in the parts washer and got it clean and air hoses it dry. Got the head basket put it on along with the dial pins. Last time seeing it just the block.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/IMAG0001.jpg

Got the head on after that and lubed up the head bolts and torque them down to specs, 22 ft lbs then 63 foot lbs.

Next came installing the rocker arms and cams. Lubed up the rocker arms and put them in as well as lubing the cam bearing journals. Lubed up the cams and put them on. Grabbed the cam bearing caps and lubed them up and put them on torque to specs which is 88 in lbs. And as you seen got the wife doing some work today haha.

Vtec is nice especially in the b series since it has the biggest kick cross over, from experience since I owned a em1 about 2 years ago but right now this block would be great for it since ls's have low compression pistons and also its been rebuilt fully. It would really be able to hold that boost very well

K20wagon

Some more progress for today, got oil pan on and also the timing belt. The timing belt was being a pain in the ass, it kept slipping as I was rotating the crank 2 full rotations but finally got it. First thing I did though was putting the oil pick up on since I got the gasket today. I first poured oil in the pump so it will be primed. Then put the gasket on and bolted the pick up to its specs 98 in lbs.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/IMAG0023.jpg

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/IMAG0024.jpg

Next I put on the rear main seal so I can put the oil pan on. Got rtv and placed it on. I couldn't torque it down since the stand was in the way but tightened to he good and snug since don't have to be torque much. Got the oil pan gasket and then the oil pan and torque bolts to spec 106 in lbs.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/IMAG0026.jpg

Now the timing belt which I finally got perfect, I lined up the crank timing pulley lined the line up to the dot on the oil pump and lined up the cams with the holes and put pins in the holes so it wouldn't move. Put the belt on and tightened the tensioner and turned the crank full two turns counter clockwise and still checked out.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/IMAG0028.jpg

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/IMAG0029.jpg

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/IMAG0033.jpg

And now finished product today. I also put on some brackets and other things to get that out of the way.

you are right vtec used to kick hard on my integra da lsvtec and in my em1 also

Alright guys got little bit done today. The engine stand got screwed up today so that's the reason why I got it leaned so its balanced. But I put the intake mani on, timing cover, driverside mount, alternate brackets along with the alternater, filled up the oil filter with oil and put it on and a couple of other things.

I also got the valve cover today and started to clean it. I put it in the parts washer and got it nice and clean. I still need to sand blast it but gonna wait to paint the valve cover till the motor is in the car.

I/rh/e, skunk 2 springs, red h emblems, ctr spoiler,Volvo lip, buddyclub short shifter, ctr shiftboot, replica 5 speed ctr shift knob, red h steering wheel vinyl, own floor mats, powers rotors, hawk hps pads. That's it for now for what I have done to the ep. But plans to swap, boost and get coilovers and rims.

I will be building the a3 whenever I swap it out so I can swap it in a ej or eg later on lol. I definitely do good work. And seriously man block work isn't that bad. I have rebuilt a couple of motors and the first one I ever built thought was gonna be a pain but it was pretty easy. After I get done with this build and get it in I am goin to help this guy build his zc that is in the background in my pics lol.

Ahh yesss... the inexpensive B series. Dont let it go man... its nice to have a backup car that is cheap to repair if some catastrophic shit goes down with your k. Even though k parts are at the 10 year mark (2002-2012), you cant really go to a local parts store and get a rebuild kit. Even remanned engines are expensive. Im still holding on to a 94 Accord with an f22b SOHC VTEC... 250k miles and it pisses oil and dribbles antifreeze... but it STILL pulls on Eclipses with fart cans. lol

Keep it up... and i look forward to your work on your EP. :thumbu:

Haha ya the b series is so much cheaper to deal with than the k. I can't wait till the k becomes this cheap. Definitely gonna hold on to this though. I am into looking for a real daily like a old school ef so the teg and ep can be the projects.

I am thinking of doing the ep build next with buying a k24a1 and rebuilding it like this but building it for boost. Gonna see how the funds will look like and start saving for that.

Just alittle update on the teg. I am putting coilovers on it and I get to the rear and every bolt on the rear hub, struts, lcas where seized up and wouldn't come loose with even a impact gun. All the bushings are shot as well. I had to heat up the bolts and use pb blaster since it works better when it gets hot. The bolt for the lca and the hub broke off so got to drill that out.

The struts are crap to, the top nut won't come off cause they stripped, I dunno why cause I had no problem with the front. So now I gotta buy some struts. I would just replace the bushings on the lcas but I am just gonna go ahead and buy some gold blox lcas and get that out of the way.

So while I replace the struts and lcas I will be removing the hole hub and cleaning it and get rid of most of the rust and stuff and coat them. Going to put anti seize on all the bolts as well so that the bolts seizing up will not happen in the future.

Update. So been trying to get these rear coilovers on but these seized up bolts are making it tough. The bolt from the hub to the lca broke off so I had to take the hole hub off and that was a hassle cause everything was rust so I used a impact gun on most bolts. The e drake cable finally came off. Got the hub and cut the bolt from the lca bushing and heated up the bolt and got it out and knocked the bolt stuck in the bushing out.

While I was at it I turned my rotors cause they was awful. I only got one done but here is a before and after pic.

Before
http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/IMAG0169.jpg

After
http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/IMAG0166.jpg

So much better. Now I was goin to remove the driver strut and the bolt that for a thru the lca and the strut broke as well.

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac172/graylin89/IMAG0161.jpg

Fuck northern cars. So I cut some more and got the strut out and need to knock that bolt out to. Now I am gonna antiseize everything when I put it together. I pick up struts tomorrow and bolts.
