My heat shield began rattling 2 days ago. Today, the check engine light threw code P0135 which is "Oxygen Sensor Heater Bank 1 Sensor 1". I religiously maintain the vehicle so i find it odd that it threw a code 2 days after the rattle so I'm going check the wire/connections tomorrow. Anyhow, checked the code at advance and I'm tryiing to verify which sensor it is. Is it referring too the Primary or Secondary? At advance the denso part # is 234-9004 ($180) but I found the dc5 denso #234-9005 ($97-$120) for cheaper. I wanted to be use it's the primay o2 sensor i need to change and online its called denso 234-9005 air and fuel ratio sensor. What step do i take to clear the code after installing it? Disconnect battery etc..?

Is this common, i had a 95 ej and never had any issues with o2 sensors. I've had 4 tune-up and the ep3 is at 100k. oem is pretty expensive so will the denso hold-up fine?

Bank 1 sensor 1 is upstream. heater code means either there is a fucked up wire to the O2 sensor or the actual heater inside the sensor is shit. look at your harness before buying a new sensor.

oh yeah, denso makes the OE sensor, so get a denso

Right-on going to have a look in the morning. I compared some part #'s and it seems like the denso 234-9005 is for the dc5-type s and 234-9004 is for ep3 and dc5-base. I'm assuming I shouldn't use the type s sensor? The cheapest i can find the denso 234-9004 is at rockauto for $148.89. oem cost is $211.44 (36531-PND-A11). I might just hollar at the dealer unless i find it cheaper.

I've been reading about these all day. The general consensus is if your primary o2 isn't stressed and you don't have a need for extra length, get the 9004 ep3/base sensor. But if you plan a race header the 9005 (02-04)type-s sensor will work fine.

if they cost the same get the dc-5 one. it plugs in and the ecu will read it. apparently it has better resolution than the ep3 one. they use the same one in the 1.7l em2 for some reason.

No plans for race header, I'm completely stock. The 9005 is significantly cheaper @ $97 while the 9004 is expensive
@ $148. I don't want any issues (DTC) so probably going with the 9004. However, I am curious, and have read that the ep3 and DC5 base/type s have a wide-band sensor. Is the 9005 sensor the same as the 9004 sensor with the exception of the length of the wire being the only difference? I'm assuming the type s sensor is specific to the PRB ECU/K20a2 motor but not completely sure of that.

Well, I had a look at the original o2 sensor today. Everything seems to look in good nature wires etc so proceeded to remove it. Pic below. No black carbon build up, I'm guessing engine is running perfect just seems the sensor/heater went bad.

from what I read, they are the same, other than length. I'm going with a 9005. I've heard people only have problems switching to the 9005 after getting tuned with kpro on stock ep3 sensor.

when do you plan to install it? Let me know how it works for you!

I just read the reviews on amazon about the denso 234-9005 and ep3 owners are saying it works perfectly fine instead of 9004. My ep is bone stock, has anyone had success with the 9005 on stock cat/exhaust?

installed my new denso o2 sensor. I used the type s 234-9005 part and it cleared my check engine light, issue resolved.

btw - purchased from rockauto for $97 shipped!

I've got a failed primary O2 sensor and am about to order the 9005 since it's about $50 cheaper - did it end up working for you?

Edit: nevermind, just read the rest of the thread. Good to know this one works!!

What does the O2 sensor even do? It's in the exhaust so how does it even affect anything? Also, will running a testpipe burn it out faster?
