View Full Version : Where's the Beef?

So, there have been lots of Slammed, Fitted, hellaflush buzz out on the net lately. I think to each their own.... I like it but it's not for me. I think practically and having a Daily Driver EP I just can't (or Won't) compromise my ride quality, handling and overall comfort just for looks.
I like in between.

Plus my wallet share won't just go to buying tires that are unevenly worn due to excessive camber.

And I ride with a Baby in my backseat so having a super stretch Fail isn't really an option for her.

I would like to see what else people out there are doing to their EPs that "fit" within their ideals.

All Styles Welcome, but bring some BEEF to the table.

So here's my Beef:

17x8 +40 not rolled yet on HFP suspension.

I spy HFP Vs. OEM bumper for comparison (new HFP rear lip going on in a month or so)

17x8 +35 w/ 235/40 yokohama s-drives, front and rears are rolled with a nice buckle on the drivers side... the rear has been raised about an inch since these pictures (taken in july of '11 after leaving import alliance rice festival) they were rubbing like crazy. oh and the roof rack is gone, using that money for some RCAs

Nope. I wouldn't recommend running a higher offset then +42 though or you will more then likely rub the rear trailing arm. And u wouldn't b able to run a lot of negative Camber. I have +38 and am close to zero offset and have about 2 inches of clearance from the rear arm

I think my setup has been brought up in any thread with wheels in it lol.

17x9 +35 wheels
245/40 tires
F3.2 R2.8 Camber (last time i got an alignment this is what i had)
Dropped on straight arm Megan coilovers
Ebay dc5 camber plates
SPC front camber bolts and rear camber kit
Hardrace RCA's
Rolled rear fenders

I should be able to get some decent pics of my car soon. Running 225/50R16 Z1 Star Specs. What I love about running a beefier setup is that the tires fit right inside the fender at the top, but just outside of the fender on the bottom because of the EP3's aggressive turnunder on the doors and rockers (turnunder is the way that the sides of the car sweep inwards closer to the ground). It looks SO MUCH BETTER than this Hellaflush negative camber malarky, so aggressive and purposeful. Especially with my OEM splashguards. Almost like it was meant to be that way.

different circumference of the 225s compared to the oem size. changes the gearing.

going from a 215/45/17 back to my 2003 oem wheels with 205/55/15, the car felt noticably quicker. but thats due to a 3.1% difference. not sure what your set up is.

nope, that's part of today's agenda. thinking of doing a partial trim and then a roll so i don't have so much metal to fold over.

what do you guys think? should i go that route or just trim them all the way to flush?

edit: ended up trimming like 1/4" off the rears then rolling the rest. gonna try to roll them a bit further tomorrow along with rolling the fronts a bit if i have time before work.

worst case scenario, i can't roll either any more than they are and if necessary i just phonebook them after it's all said and done. i guess we'll see!

Right now I have 16x7 with 225/50/16 up front, and 205/55/16 in the rear. With a 2" drop front, and around 1.5" in the rear.
I'll probably roll my rears sometime soon, but I had to play around with my splash guard upfront to reduce some of the rubbing.

Definitely don't use the inverted tie rod ends. They over correct tie rod angle and increase bump steer. They are a gimmick product. You would have to be laying frame in order for them to effectively point the tie rod angle back to instant center.

Anyway, here is the BEEF!

Looking good as always.

What camber kit are you running up front?

I need to get one. I'm currently pushing the limits right now.

Post up soon.

You mean top hats? Im using Todd's adjustable caster plates

Definitely don't use the inverted tie rod ends. They over correct tie rod angle and increase bump steer. They are a gimmick product. You would have to be laying frame in order for them to effectively point the tie rod angle back to instant center.

Anyway, here is the BEEF!

17X9 +35 front with a 245/40/17 Z1, 17x7.5 +43 rear with a 225/45/17 Z1

Alignment angles are

Front -3.5 camber, .05 toe out, 6.4 deg caster
Rear -2.0 camber, 0 toe

How were the hotchkis plates you had before?

They were ok for what they were, didnt offer much adjustment range honestly. The one benefit of those is increased shock travel for those running stock or Koni/GC, but other than that if you have a full coilover there are much better options.

so im ordering up my wheels tonight just not sure on a tire size. im going with the 16x8 rpf1 thinking about either 225/45 or 225/50 what would be a better size to run. prob going with the advan AD08 tire as well. any input will help

I would do the 45's from both an appearance and performance standpoint. Smaller diameter will shorten up your gearing ever so slightly.

Any reason to not get 17s? Then you can run 225/45 or even 235/40 all around and not need much modifying if any.

But if you stick to 16s then a 50 profile will be closer to stock specs

o2ep3
07-23-2012, 12:59 PM
i figure 17s would be to big for the car. i am sick of swapping wheels after events and want all around great performance. i have been running a 15x7 wheel with hoosiers looking to go to a 16 with a good track and auto x tire that can still be run on the road.

45's are sportier- and 50's are large and comfortable-- with slight tire rolll Ive had both45's and 50 series 16's

Yeah i looked at your car thats what helped me make my choice. I ended up going with the 225/45 toyo R1R tires. Seeing as its not my daily car and i have spericals in the car i dont think comfort is a option at this point haha. Cant wait to track it with all my new suspension work and wheels.

Toyo RA1 245/45/16, Kosei 16x 8.5, 37 offset. These are the widest and stickiest street legal 16" tires under 25" available. 9.4" tread. There are 255/17s but they are at least 25" and are heavy. I think the perfect size would be 24" x 10" but no such thing for street. More pics when the fenders are finished.

This is before 10mm spacers all around. Front is pulled about 2" but are pretty subtle. Rears not sure, still pulling them, which is hell with the welded inner/outer fender but my mesquite branch works well, lol. Rear tires are 225/50/16s. I think the cambers in this pic were all under -2.5. Currently -2.5f/-2.6 r.

aw dam... well i at least wanna run 225's in the front lol and i do plan on getting the rears shaved (got hit on the driver side rear quarter panel so theres filler in the area) and the front pulled.
also is a smaller diameter better for the front? if so i guess my next set up will be f 225/40/17 r/ 215/45/17 and if not 45's all around lol

I'm currently running 245's all around.

Check which wheels you like and the offset that they come in.

Depending on the wheel offset (unless you run spacers) that should determine your tire width.

Or if you know which tire width, that can help with which offset on the wheels.

Also, do you want to be staggered(more track oriented) or run the same size all around(better for daily and tire rotation)

On the XXR wheels anything above a 215 will rub a lot.

I have that exact width/offset and ran 215/50 and they rubbed like crazy in the front (rolled rears). Went down to 205s and it fixed rubbing but decreased performance too much.

225 or 235 on the xxr wheels with the +35 offset works. But the +25 offset will limit you to 215 unless you run a detrimental amount of camber

I'm not mad. I'm crazy. And I'll gladly use my mesquite branch on anyone's fenders if they wish. The price is; you have to watch.

225s will be fine on your 8.25s. Even 245s will work but they won't handle as well. For handling the tread width should be about the same size as the wheel width, preferably with the wheel being slightly bigger, generally speaking. 225s should fit the wells with no problem. Maybe some slight adjusting but probably not. 245s will need some fitting.

Edit; Toyo RA1s can handle a narrower wheel but they don't last as long as other street tires.

I was trying to PM this but it wont allow me to PM anyone right now...

Here's a short chapter:

You might get away running the 225 in the front and 215 rear. The rear is the limiting factor on the ep3.

With proper off set you can run 245s. Im using Evo IX Enkei wheels ( 17x8 +38 ) and I get no rubbing what so ever on HFP suspension with 245/40. *** All stock alignment ***

On my xxr wheels (same specs as you) I rubbed a lot on the 215/50 (tires came off my girls TL-S so thats why I used them, free) but eventually went real skinny with 205/40 so I wouldn't rub and I was going lower anyways. But it was more experimental and for looks, not very functional. I will sell them for the right price (used only 3 months with new tires on them).

I still have them and my honest opinion about the XXR:
They are great for the money but at highway speeds I felt they vibrated slightly around 60-70mph (balanced according to the tire place). I had to drive 70mph+ on the highway to stop it(hub rings installed and proper seated lug nuts). I have the 530s in chromium black and get more compliments on them than any other wheel for style. But those who like function love the Evo IX with meaty tires (like myself) and they make the ep handle like a dream.

My question to you is:

What is your ultimate goal?

I learned from experience that trying to work with what you got, and not what you really want will only cause you to spend more $ in the long run.

Think of the look, function and future mods that you want and how it will all fit together. If one interferes or wont work then you need to rethink it.

Personally the +35 offset is perfect for our cars. I wish I had bought those but the whole Concave look of the +25 is what sold me on them. For looks and thats why I have them still. Might slap them on for a car show or meet but would daily/spirited driving on the Enkei wheels.

Hope this helps.

Ask away, Ive gone through about 6 sets of wheels with different tires and offsets all with stock alignment.

well tbh i was going for the hella flush look hoping that the coil overs (twin flex) i bought would make me slammed. but i did no research other than my friends RSX type S was slammed on some coil overs of the same brand. Figured id be slammed if i got them and found a $800 deal with just 7k on them... i love how they ride and how they handle the road but since I'm running these xxr's with 205/40/17's as you know its no fun :/ tried to rip it through a yellow light right off the block to my pad and it was pretty sketchy. Did not like that at all lol. Even though I get tons of compliments on the chromium black 531's id love to feel the handling everyones talking about xD

I'm pretty over the slammed look, well at least for my own car. So I've turned to the functional side rather than just looking slammed and angling dips and going through the middle of speed bumps to clear my exhaust since i feel that I've spent enough on that game.

So I've been reading up a lot on what i can do and been gathering parts slowly since I'm on deployment and got money to spend. So I'm looking to go with a build that would be nice for daily use yet if i wanted to hit the track id be ready with minimal adjustments. So with that I'm searching for a sexy set of 8ish/17 +3x rims that are sexy lol and get my beef on. just doing research on the tires i should run...

also I'm still running the 03 4 lug set up so evo enkei's are kinda not in the picture :/

For a 225 you'd probably want to run a 8 inch wide rim. You don't want to "balloon" your tires. You'll feel the sidewalks rolling through turns. Basically a 7 inch wide time would feel less stable on 225's versus a 8.

so your running a +27 offset basically... because with my current set up 17x8.25 +25 when you do the math i got (don't know the correct term for it) 79.8mm to the fender and 129.8mm into the wheel well and you got 81 mm to the fender and 135 mm into the wheel well and your wheels fit fine with 245/45? with that small difference can i just roll and pull my fenders and run 245/45 in the front and 225/45 in the rear with the rims i have now and be good?

A 9.5 can/will. I know there are DC5s with 10s. If they can, we can. It just takes more effort on our EPs.

You know how I love my 245s but I think they are the bare minimum for our chassis when it comes to traction, even with it being a track tire. But it's a pretty nice size and a good compromise for street. We weigh well over 2,000 lbs. and sit high for a corner carver. 255s are pretty sweet but they are heavier, less nimble, expensive, lower mpgs, and less practical for dd. Every size seems to have a trade off.

That said, I'd love to rock 275s front, 255s rear.:mtongue:

The hardest part for me is the diameter that has to be used for wide tread. I would kill for a 24" diameter with 10" tread. I would have sex with a very large hairy arm pitted women for a 24" diameter and 10" tread.

From Powers' thread;

245s will work fine up front but 225s will handle better with the 8.25" wheel size . 245s in the rear require some fender work.

I have 245/45s on 8.5", 37 offset wheels,10 mm spacers, and R lcas up front. Therefore they required about 1 3/4" to 2" of fender work. 225s rear. The reason I put 245s on 8.5s is because RA1s can handle well with a smaller width wheel. Extreme Summers, for this conversation, like a tread width equal to the wheel width, or close to it.

SHG also did some fender pulling.

just picked up some 05-06 RSX-S stockies for balls cheap with tires. they're mounted on 235/50/17 tires. im not to sure about the specs of the rims so anyone running this set up that could let me know if itll fit or if i need to get spacers to run them? any info would be great!

Eeww. Those tires will raise your EP almost 3/4" above stock and re gear the drive to a higher drive ratio.

Here's mine. Evo8 235/45. It's sitting a pinky gap between the fenders and tires which is perfect stance for me ;)

Nice! Curry Acura? $590 is how much I got mine for.... Just have to ask John. I looked yesterday and they have an HFP brake kit (4 Slotted Rotors and Pads) that would be sweet. Would just need some RSX calipers and maybe SS lines to ice the cake... They're pricey tho. Like $500!

Good thread, suspension hasn't settled yet since I just put them on. It normally sits a little lower in the back. I like the meatier look instead of the typical 205\40\16.

I just picked it up last week as a new daily, need to decide on a lip kit to give it a better stance.

It rubs slightly when I hit a large dip since I'm on the stock shocks.

I don't believe Falken makes a 245/40/17 615 any more. ZIIs and Rivals have the right sizes and are quite a bit more advanced in several ways. Stickier, much faster, much longer lasting tread, much better rain tires, don't get nearly as greasy when hot. I would kill for Rivals in my size.

None of the above, sir!

I call it the "not lower you car to the point of not enjoying driving" technique, lol. It's about an inch drop (maybe a slight less than an inch) and stiff spring and damper setup will keep the suspension from compressing to the point that the tires will hit the lip.

I will actually be rolling the inner lip soon and will be trying for a 1.5 inch drop (most I will go, no lower) so lower my center of gravity.

The most important thing is having the stiff enough damper+spring combo so it doesn't allow the rear tire to move up and down a lot. Yea it sucks driving around town like that because you'll be feeling the bumps and dips more but that's the sacrifice you make for getting the extra grip and handling.

Also, taller tires will raise your ride height by exactly however much taller they are compared to your old setup. Same thing goes if you're going to be installing shorter tires.

Currently 245/45/16f, 225/50/16r on 16x8.5, 25" diameter

Eventually 245/35/17f, 245/35/17r or 225/45/17r on 17x9.5f/17x9r, 23.8" diameter (reduces final drive to 4.9, reduces rotational mass, drops chassis 1/2" without lowering suspension, 9.4" tread)

There are also some nice 235/40/17 24.4" diameter tires. Right in between 245s and 225s, 8.8".

Nice. I like a taller tire but i'm afraid i wont be able to fit a 45 all to well. I thought about a 255 up front but that is just to much tire for me. It eats the way the wheel looks IMO. If Falken doesn't have those sizes i'll probably go for Rs3 or Z1s if i can get a 245 in them.

Nice choice. What size(s)?

MJ, you probably know all of this but for anyone else; Still is the fastest tire under certain conditions and is the most heat tolerant. A little wimpy in the wet, similar to Kumho XSes. Very good braking and in line traction. A little vague in steering feel but the times don't lie. For SCCA ST*, belongs in the same level as Rivals and ZIIs. All three of which are eligable this year (2013; UTQG of 180 or above) and next year (UTQG; 200 or above). If I autoxed seriously, these would be my choice as they are the last to fade from heat.

* for those that don't care about ST, Yokohama AD08s (180 UTQG), Nitto NT01s (best handler), Toyo RA1s and R1Rs, etc. fit in the same approximate performance category.

Here's what I can confirm on the Hankook R-S3 as of today. The tread pattern and sidewall of the tire will remain the same, only the compound is being revised for improved wet and low temp traction. We (Tire Rack) will identify the tire as R-S3 Version 2. Since the sidewall and tire label will not change, the key identifier will be the four digit build date on the sidewall of the tire. Any R-S3's produced in 2014 (XX14) are Version 2 tires with the enhanced compound.

Production is under way now and we expect a wide range of sizes to arrive via container shipments in April. Hankook is fully aware of the SCCA Solo requirements and we expect them to make the April 30th cut-off barring some unforeseen issue. The tires can be ordered currently by contacting us via phone and requesting the Version 2 or online after they appear later this week.

Yeah, a roll in the rear is a must. But in the front slight negative camber will sort out any rubbing.

I think that 17x9 +35 might be a better fitment for beefy tires.

You can always add a 5mm spacer, but its harder to shave 5mm off a hub

Check the dimensions of the Moog ep3 tie rod ends and see if those have more thread.

Found these for an awesome deal at Tire Rack. 225/45/17 Direzza ZII's. The mounted tires are 215/45/17 General Exclaims with very little to exclaim about. They came with the RPF1's when I bought them, so I wanted to use them up before buying new tires. I'm hoping the ZII's will fit the hatch with no issues. Car is lowered about 1.2 inches on Koni yellows and Neuspeed Sport springs. I'm not sure about the offset of my rims. Is it stamped on the wheel casting someplace? If someone could help a noob out I would appreciate it.

The wheel specs are usually stamped on the back side of the wheels. Look for markings around the hub and on the spokes.
You should see one stamping with the wheel size and witdh (ie 17x8) and the other stamp is the offset (ie 35 JJ) or something similar.

There are more factors than just diameter. Rolling resistance and tire/wheel weight will also play into that calculation as well.
Same diameter tire but wider would be heavier thus affecting the mass that needs to be rotated.

dirtyMETHOD
02-19-2015, 12:21 PM
That offset with 215/45 and 5mm spacers would look really nice IMO. Might have to roll rear quarters though if you dont want to add any camber
The HFP wheels are 17x7 +45 and left plenty of room so 5mm spacers should be nice.
You can even go 225/45 but that will increase diameter slightly and be heavier which will affect MPGs a tiny bit

Actually, I wouldn't even consider less that 225s for a performance oriented EP. 245s are close to perfect without lots of hp, however our wheel wells don't know this.:msmile:

Yes, although there are other factors such as structure, compound, weight, diameter, etc. My RA1s give up 2-4 mpgs, 34 mpgs compared to 37, but I also drive more aggressively.

The new tires going on the 17x7's are 225/45/17 Dunlop ZII's. Ive heard that they run wider than average 225's with beefier shoulders. So I might check fitment and then add spacers for that extra beef if I can. I'm guessing the 5mm spacer wont require extended wheel studs?

Are you still using the a3 motor or did you swap? Those are pretty decent mpg numbers. I think my best was 360 mi on a tank with summer blend gas. Which I believe is ~ <30 mpg.... And that was on 215/45/17's (shitty General brand summer tires)

Hasbro
02-19-2015, 08:23 PM
Still the A3 with Reflash. 34 mpg is with 30/32 psi and RA1s don't roll well, anyway (they are slower than other track tires on the straights by as much as 4-5 mph!) I've always gotten higher than average mpg and once did 42.5 on one tank when really trying and 60-70 psi and all stock. I don't launch hard and hardly use the brakes in corners, preferring to coast in and accelerate in the corners. Not something I'd recommend but lots of fun and easier on the motor, tranny, axles, brakes, etc. And only if by myself - it would scare the crap out of a passenger.

nhbpa3
02-19-2015, 09:58 PM
Is that the intake re flash for like 5-10 hp?Hold your speed in corners, can't agree more. There's a website called Eco modder; people get crazy about efficiency from proper driving to throttle de-dent springs to hideous but effective aero mods. There's a guy pulling 90 mpg with an eg hatch using aero, engine off coasting and a throttle spring. Not to go all vegan in a thread about beef, but efficiency is appealing. I'll take grip over a few mpg tho.

Yeah, I'm a member there. It's very interesting, especially the aero stuff. I've been playing with some street legal single seater layouts in the 800+ lb. range. 100 hp, mid engine, 10 lbs/hp, 42-45" height, 50-55" wide, 80-85" wheelbase, fairly softly sprung with 4" travel, skinny tires but handles great, terrific mpgs and very quick. A cross between a 30s racer, formula 600, and a Lotus Seven.:msmile:

Sorry to thread jack.

Playing with? Like you have a couple laying around?! lol. I wonder if the CTR wing has any mpg advantages, since it's similar to a "kammback" shape.

Back to tires, I'd like to try and compare the 225's to the 185 blizzaks I have on stock wheels right now and see the variance in mpg. Obviously a lot of variables to be considered. But just straight up look at how much + or - results. It's negative one million degrees right now though, so I'll painfully wait for summer tire weather.

Sadly emphasis has been on getting ready for my first year back to school since HS in 2007 and my audio install I've been updating on in Facebook.

Someone local posted some fresh powder coated evo VIII 17X8 for 450 but I don't have the cash for the tires... Just got new 205/55 Indy's for my stockies.

I'm still torn if I want the easy to clean evos or Konig Ultraform 7 spokers which are only 16-17 lbs... Either way, whatever I get will be 245/40 or 235/45. Just a matter of upgrading my income to the level of my project dreams haha

Currently running SSR MS3R's 4x100 17x8 +36 with 235/45 17 Yokohama S-Drives.
Rears are rolled, fronts are fine.
i will be downsizing maybe to a 225/40 as i want the car to sit a bit lower and to avoid rubbing as much as i do currently on my S**T roads.

will add a few more pictures to show clearances when i have time to take them.

***WILL BE SELLING SSR'S WHEN I MOVE TO 5 LUG SOMETIME NEXT SEASON***
