I obviously missed something becuz now it won't shut correctly

its truly not that difficult ... it literally only fits one way... just make sure its pressed into the groove completely

Probably hung up on the spark plug tube gaskets. If you dont line them up pretty much perfectly, the valve cover will just sit there and tilt back and forth.
