View Full Version : how to gain extra power with stock A3?

I'm looking to gain about 210-220whp without supercharge or boost, basically I want all engine and most important RELIABILITY I don't want to swap either I only have 120,xxx miles I believe shes still young for a swap :) so far I have an Injen CAI (thank you SilverStar), KRRH stock axle back and Kpro, what else I should get to gain a little more power before I get it tuned?

k20a2 complete head and swap the guts from a k20a2 block into your a3. throw a RBC intake manifold on and get a 2.5in or larger exhaust. you will have OEM reliability and a solid 200+ whp. personally- total waste of time IMO.

thanks for the quick reply but personally I don't want to swap.. it's a DD car and I just want a little more power like 200whp would be fine.. any other options lol?

You can't get 200 whp with an a3 without a swap or boost.only way to get pass 170 are aftermarket cam and full exhaust catback,kpro,raceheader,cal,rbc and churches dyno .unless you have nitrous that shouldn't be a problem reaching your goal.I have tired and ended up with a swap.

An A3 has about 130 whp stock? So you want a 50% boost in power all motor and keep DD drivability? Not going to happen.

Boost or swap are your only 2 options. I would say get a JRSC racing kit, that should put you at right around 200whp

K20z1 cams, a3 exhaust rockers, 70mm bored prc mani, bored out throttle body, 2.25 mid pipe, and an ephatch sticker. You just might peak 200 whp.

and 200whp will get old real fast. for the money you are going to invest in making your a3 'quicker'... you could save yourself time and headaches by just doing a swap- or throwing a JRSC on it.

Hey now! It's not a shit motor. I'm going to be hitting 220-230 whp all motor with the a3 block.

I agree that the A3 is not a shit motor, but the block is not what makes it an A3. If you have swapped the head and internals as someone suggested above then you no longer have an A3.

But it still says k20a3 on the block. Shhhh... People will never know the difference. I'm also doing a a3 vs a2 vtec killer dyno comparison. I'm using the a3 cams to break in the engine build. I might as well have some fun with it.

K20a3 can never be an all motor monster and most likely grenade after 300 whp, but it will hold up nicely till then.

Yeah vtec killer head. I'm not too concerned. After the 24a1 head and set up goes on I'm going to buy a daily. I'm leaning towards a roadster an old Alfa TR-6 or a MG Midget, if not im buying a 1st gen Miata, and I will still be auto x'ing and hopefully start circuit racing next year maybe winter season in the ep3. This car is my track car.

Did you get 197-199 whp with the a1 head or full blown a3 long block. I'm hoping for 230 whp. I would be a happy parent.

Mine was a full blown a3 with the exception of a port n polished head 3 angle valve job n full head acc with state 2 bc cams on a cold day I peaked 199.8 n 176.5 tq. I had a mean Lil machine.

That's a quite a bit of money in an a3. Haha you were determined. I shouldn't be the one talking. I cringed after I added up my build and still growing.

I got you and onasty mixed up. He had a vtec killler build full blown a3 with 197 on the dyno.

Buddy just get k20z1, k20a2, k24a2 (any set) cams a3 exhaust rockers, open your a3 head put them in get a Vtec killer tune and start driving before going to the tuner. You'll be better off with some 310cc injectors, race header and a 2.5 inch exhaust. Otherwise if you can swap a little portion of your a3 head than get s2k valvetrain and call it a day. Rev it to 7k+ all day safely. If relaibility is your concern go oem mix and match stuff nad you'll be fine. Most importantly your tune should be reliable.

Just boost it... then later on when you swap you throw that power adder on whatever motor you have choosen.

I had alot of fun when my a3 made 254whp, and it would take the beatings all day every day... a3 you little whore hahaha

A good thought in mind for the list would be;

Chain tensioner
Timing chain
Z3 Upper chain guide

A a2/z1 oil pump assembly would be needed if you upgrade the valvetrain. You'll need to throw the rpms higher.

Ive put in $4k plus in my build which is all parts and machine work. No labor. Shit gets expensive!
