View Full Version : Terrible Gas Mileage.....

I now have 3400mi on my '02 Si and I have been getting really crappy gas mileage. On a full tank, I usually get around 200-230 miles. Especially around town, this little EP gets really thirsty. I dont drive my car too hard, but usually shift at around 3500-4k. Ive heard that once you rev above 3k, your mileage gets pretty bad. Anyone else have this problem? Im hoping that it will improve alittle more after a few thousand more miles.:'(

200 miles seems pretty low, I usually get between 230-250 out of a full tank of gas. I have noticed as the car breaks in I get better gas mileage. When I first got the car I only got about 23 miles a gallon now I hit 25 with 5900+ miles on my car. Set your trip meter to 0 next time you fill up and when you refill the next time divide the amount of gallons by the amount of miles you drove on that tank of gas and that will give you your excact miles per gallon. Good luck! :)

your gas milage should improve. Esp. after your first oil change which should be coming up for you soon. My beast tank was somewhere around 330 miles, and that was mixed driving.

wow. that's pretty crappy.

the key to getting good mileage is to spend as much time in 5th gear as possible.

I get no worse than 280 miles to the tank. I usually fill up right when the red light comes on.

when I drive conservatively, I get as much as 310 miles to the tank. Kind of disappointing b/c I'd figure there to be a bigger savings by driving easy. oh well. just justifies driving like I stole it. :D

Chunky how many miles per gallon are you getting?

I don't have any hard numbers but I've noticed that since I started using 91 octane and having the Hondata tune, my mileage is much better.

well, I just got my first oil change about 200 miles ago (3400 now) and with my first fill up, im at about 120mi w/ half a tank left. Thats pretty shitty since this is only a 2.0 4-banger. so figure 250mi total on a 13 gallon tank. Thats less then 20mpg. I should be getting about 335+miles on a full tank. One thing to note, is that I do tach it up to 6k at least once a day, but for the most part, I drive pretty modestly. no racing, etc.

My gas mileage is way below what I expected. My 94 lude got way better gas milage. Hopefully it will improve after first oil change.

Why does everyone figure the mileage with a tank. That is a method that has no accuracy what so ever, it is all releative. Do the right thing and actually calculate MPG. This does not mean oh well... my tank is 13 gallons, and ah at 1/4 tank on the gauge I went 100 miles, well hot dam 33 mpg!!!

Fill the car. Set the trip to 0, drive the car, fill up at the same gas station, same gas pump, same position. Divide the trip number by the amount of gas needed to fill up. even better idea, record how many miles you go on 3 fill-ups then divide that by the total amount of gas used, this will reduce pump error.

Who's using all 13 gallons, anyway? To burn that much gasoline, you'll almost be left running on vapors. The light comes on with about 2 gallons to spare, at the least. I've never filled up with more than 10 or 11 gallons from the pump.

Well when i bough my car the sticker said 26 mpg city and 31 highway. Right now with 1,400 miles i am getting 25.8 mpg. and thats even with the winter sh*ty gas. I think by summer time with better gas i shld get 28-30 mpg

Posted this a while back, figured you might want to take a look at it. Unless you carefully document each fillup and log the mileage, you aren't going to be able to determine your mileage. Yeah, I do take it to the extreme, but I like precise figures...

Here's what the 2k2 Si has done in the first 8 months and 10k miles:

Total Fuel $: $644.52
Total Gallons: 411.26 Avg Fuel Cost/gal: $1.57
Total Miles: 10245
Avg MPG 12/15/2002: 25.130

Trips:
5/17 - 5/19/02 DAL to OKC 456
7/12 - 7/14/02 DAL to HOU 490.8
8/24 - 8/25/02 DAL to LRK 640
12/13 - 12/15/02 DAL to HOU 495

Total road miles: 2081.8
% of total miles: 20.32%

Best E/T: 16.007
Best Trap: 86.42 mph
Best MPG: 32.64

rev above 3k??? so what are you suggesting. that we shift at 3k? honda's recommended shift points for this car is 3.4-3.5k

On long steady road trips, I've noticed that the 2k2 Si seems to move off the full mark and down to 1/2 tank quickly, but then the 2nd half really lasts.

On pages 11-147 & 11-155 of the Helm manual, you will see that the tank is shaped funky as hell, not at all flat and regular. That would explain the rapid use of the first half of the tank.

The car loosens up considerably with mileage, but the most important part to remember that if mileage is a really key concern, then you bought the wrong model!!!!

I now have about 13k miles. I think after you hit 10k it will change.

you are essentially doing the same thing, only more quantitative.

but it's almost impossible to get any sort of exact numbers, so I prefer generalized figures.

but if you want my latest stats,

675 miles on 21.3 gallons or roughly 32 miles per gallon.

I always fill up at the same gas station on the same pump. just out of habit.

That includes a lot of highway driving, i'd say roughly 50% open freeway, 20% gridlock freeway traffic (stop and go like whoa) and 30% WOT ;)

I could do better, but WOT is too much fun.

It is possible, if you record ALL the fuel that you put into the car (up to 1/1000 of a gallon accuracy) since new and know the total miles on your car you can get pretty damn accurate.

After 8.5k My average is 27.8 MPG;)

well, my whole thing is, mileage varys depending on how hard you drive. I like to keep the per tank average in mind b/c it also lets me know how hard i've been driving.

Oh yes, very true. My old car "only" got 11 MPG racing around Thunderhill, still better than true race cars.

I don't drive that conservatively and average about 27.5 mpg. But on a recent trip to Vegas I got 30+ both ways.

6500 miles on my car?

I'm getting right at 30mpg so on a full tank I ride to about 350 miles and then fill up just to be safe (I've been doing this consistently since about 3000 miles on my car and now have 7500). I shift over 4k rpms most of the time. If you don't, you can't get anywhere (well you can, it's just that people will be all over your back bumper).

dang u guys are lucky.. i shift at like 3.5-4k and get only 26mpg.

about the post of 1/2 half goign fast then the 2nd half going slow.. i'm the total opposite...
i can get like 180miles until the half mark.. then the 2nd half i only get up to like 240... it's total BS.

hmmm... you guys suck. if i'm lucky (read: good) then i'll get 25 mpg on a 3 tank average. but in this car i can't be good for 3 tanks. Real world, i get 20 mpg. all city. She's a pig, but she has never failed me at the stop lights. I can do 30+ mpg and have on serveral occasions... i just get so bored doing 70 on cruise tho.

the key to getting good mileage is to spend as much time in 5th gear as possible.

when in town I usually stay in the highest gear possible and my gass milege is graet, but most of my drivng is highway,
90% highway, 10% in town. and the only time I really get over 3,5 rpms is when I'm getting on an on ramp, running late, or some annoying punk is doing 60mph in the fast lane.

after i had got my third ticket, i chilled out on drving, (shift early, stay out of vtec) and noticed my gas had to be filled alot less, now that all my friends got their cars back, and im in vtec alot, it seems like i can just see the gas bein sucked out of my baby.... i dont like how that works, but thats how honda made their engines! at high revs, you burn more gas, and get a mini "boost" and at low revs, you can ride for weeks :D not a bad trade -mike

exactly, I think my car burned more gas the first week I had it cause I was just having fun with the v-tech="mini boost" having never driven a honda before. Then after I figured out what she could do and i settled down she did great w/gas.

When the needle on your car says you have 1/2 tank, the tank is actually WAY MORE than half full. This is because the reserve tank is gargantuan. 120 miles-to-1/2 tank was not accurate, because the reserve is huge. I get about 220 miles when I go all the way down to the E tickmark. But at that point I still have 3-4 gallons of gas. I've gotten >300mi. on a tank, I just had to ride that needle way down into the E.

Thats exactly like mine - my tank is on E at the moment, and its like 243 miles....I dont even drive that crazy - I do like wot twice a week or something....I'm about 50/50 w/ freeway/cty so...who knows. It definantly drops off though, they need a accurate fuel gage, this one blows......When I usually fill up on E, I only get like 10 gallons into the thing.....so who knows

Is it the agressive transmission that makes a difference in an otherwise efficient engine? I think my avg of 26 mpg is acceptible, because I drive pretty aggressively....hey in Austin, you gotta keep up with Duly's and SUVs on every side... and they get on it, too.

I've been getting lower than expected mileage myself; I actually expected the mileage to be better than that of my '02 2.0L GLS Jetta that I traded for it. Sad part is that my Jetta would regularly return 305-315 miles to a tank full of gas, the low fuel indicator coming on at approximately 295-305 miles.

The alarming factor is that the 2.0L engine is almost twenty years old in it's design, only smog equipment, drive by wire and internals have been updated. This design largely takes a back seat in overall productivity and efficiency to more modern DOHC engines often aided by variable assisted timing.

My Si gets regularly between 230-240 miles to a tank full:'( I drive moderately spirited in this car, but is no different from how I drove my Volkswagen. My Si should be a lot lighter and more efficient in its design, and also more aerodynamic to boot.
