i have gotten this too on cold mornings, sounds like my starter doesnt engage properly from time to time.

I have heard other members experience this with their starter. My grinding however was caused by a faulty compressor clutch.

It sounds like its revving at me. Damn hondas and their parts always revving at people..so is there a solution to this or no? Is it bad or just something that happens?

Had the same problem during colder weather. Then it progressed to a majority of start ups. Then I replaced the starter and no more grinding :)

Ok I have the same issue as well but once the car has been turned on there is a squeaking sound as the car starts to move. I assume this means the starter is getting ready to go. So should i just replace it or should I just wait for the day my car doesn't start?? Lol

put in it gear before turning engine off, leave it gear overnight and start it in morning while it`s in gear. Work just fine for me.

This has begun to happen to me as well. Just another EP common thing then. Funny thing is this occurs less when I leave it out of gear and turn the key before ignition. But the safety has been cut from a previous user as they had a Viper auto start alarm.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you guys better be looking and listening closely to your timing belt tensioners when that noise is happening. 10-1 it's the tensioner. It'll only do it after the vehicle sits for an extended period of time. The tensioner is pressured by engine oil via the oil pump. Typically that pressure it supposed to stay contained within the tensioner. However with time and mileage the tensioner loses it's ability to contain the oil pressure and bleeds it out. This seems to be a very common problem on K series engines. So please, before you seriously damage something, check the tensioner. I had the exact same noise last year. I narrowed it down to the tensioner and replaced it with an OEM honda one and the noise is gone. It's acutally very easy to replace too.

Hmmm that is a possibility as well! I was talking to a buddy about the squeaking rubbing noise and he suggested that it could be my wheel bearing on the front passenger side. So I need to check all that. As of right now though my starter no longer makes that grinding noise anymore the car starts up fine with no hesitation.

So is this starter or tensioner

gammarus

While my car is at idle there is no noise coming from the motor, except for the obvious noise lol. So since the motor is on and the tensioner is working, there would have to be noise coming from it of it were going bad. But the noise I have now is when the car is moving and once I am at freeway speeds you no longer hear anything. So in my situation I think my starter is fine but from what I can tell my wheel bearing is going out I'll be taking a look at it this weekend though.

like the bendix on the starter stays engaged to the flywheel to long (sticky starter)... right? does that sound like what everyone is talking about? if so, my starter is doing this during cold weather also... no sound when the weather is warm... no matter how long it sits

The grinding sound is the starter. I have been through a couple. I figured it's cheaper to replace the starter than losing teeth on the flywheel. Just FYI a new napa starter drew more amps than my 3 year old Honda reman starter.

does anyone know why the starter stays engaged too long? would it be the electronics of the solenoid, or a stickey gear drives? get a new starter, or replace just the solenoid?
