View Full Version : DIY: Idle Air Assist Valve Delete

Decided to delete my broken Idle Air Assist Valve. Broke this stupid thing 6 years ago trying to change my air filter, bent the intake arm downwards and snap! I had no intentions of replacing it after reading it wasn't needed, and the thing was just taking up space in the engine bay and looking ugly!

Found this on JHPUSA, sweet! Wait a minute, 20 bucks for this thing? No thanks!

Here's how to do it on the cheap:

What you need to go buy. 3/8" NPT plug and some 3/8" vacuum caps. NPT thread is tapered, unlike regular metric or english thread which is straight. All this means is when you install the plug, you can never crank it down all the way. This is important when asking for the part, it has to be NPT. All these bits cost me 5 bucks at NAPA.

Picture of the part in question - the broken valve. Unclamp the hose from the top of the valve and pull it off the IM and the valve. Next, use a box end wrench to remove the valve. It'll take some muscle to break it loose. It's tight in and around the valve, only a box end wrench will work.

Recycle the clamp to use on capping the port on the IM

Cap this port on the intake arm as well, no clamp is needed.

Plug installed. Use some thread locker for extra insurance. Note half the plug threads are still exposed. This is because it has tapered threads.

Not to be a dick, but that's not the IACV. The IACV is on the bottom of the throttle body. That is the AAV. I had capped everything off, but had read you didn't need to do anything with the valve itself. That it could just be left. Just FYI.

I do like how it looks cleaner in the bay. I will be replacing my valve shortly though as I am chasing a vac leak and this is on my list of things to do to unbypass in the engine bay.

Finally, sorry for the thread jack. Nice DIY.

No it's cool, thanks for the information - but I never called it the IACV

Sorry. That's what I get for reading the shit on my phone. I guess I saw Idle Air and assumed the next word was gonna be Control or Assist. Sorry for the confusion.

So what exactly is the functional purpose of the valve?

I know it helps on cold starts and settling out the idle. I did the delete, broke my valve in the process, and ordered a new one cause my cold starts suffer. Going to the hardware store is a much better option than the K-Tuned kit.

Great DIY

I take it back, the idle air assist arrived and the part that connected to thhe intake was snapped off! So I will be keeping it deleted but it will look WAY better than the one I have on. Not the best picture but you can see the paint job I did.

Very nice. I'm going to have to do this. I'm deleting cruise control as well. Would deleting the iavc be a bad idea? How well would it clean up the engine bay if I did do it?

If you delete the IACV you will have to keep you foot on the throttle until the car achieves some type of warm startup. Also, on top of keeping your foot in to warm up the engine, you will have to play with the throttle plate stay which is a small set screw on the side of the throttle body which adjusts the opening of the throttle plate. You will have to play with it until it leaks the desired amount of air to keep an idle after warm up.

Keep in mind without the IACV you will not be able to run accessories that put a load onto the engine without having a severe drop in idle RPM. you will have to compensate at idle with throttle input with your foot.

All said and done, if you plan on dailying, don't delete it.

Exactly why I bought a new one and didn't delete it like everyone said.
