I'm finally gonna install some drop in cams this weekend and figured to replace the chain tensioner. Gonna stick with oem and remember reading about the TSX tensioner being revised. I cant seem to find the thread on K20a. Anybody have some input or should I just stick with an oem Type S replacement?
The engine is an A2 out of a 2003 model with dual valve springs if that makes a difference.

The hybrid racing one is overbuilt should be good insurance for your cams

Too much tensioner for this engine at this stage I think.

You'd rather have too little?

Id stick with oem- drop in cams are slightly more aggressive than oem so it shouldnt be an issue.

Oem is best, you can buy 7 oem tensioners for the same price as a hybrid tct

I honestly have no reason to think the stocker is "not enough". I am adding the equivalent of a Type R cam with more mid-range and a slight bump up top.
I can be easily convinced otherwise with good reason, but honestly, as of yet, for what I'm doing I dont see a reason for a $300 tensioner.

The Hybrid tensioner may well be the best way, but at this stage I dont think it's more right than oem.

I agree, was just joshing. If your future plans don't involve anything crazy there's no reason.

Future plans are on the crazy side.
They also involve the K24 shortblock sitting on a stand in my brothers garage.
Next to a Z3 head.
And some Drag Cartels.
Ductile iron sleeves...

If I remember correctly the beefier OEM tensioners are the later models with an orange locking tab.
I think kseriesparts sells them.

I also just found a thread on k20a suggesting that the 09+ TSX TCT is the way to go.
So there's that lulz.

Thank you sir. I do believe that is the info I was looking for. I've been doing a lot of reading late at night and am just so exhausted from work I honestly am finding it difficult to remember things. I've taken to jotting stuff down. I am getting old.
I appreciate the input.

I wouldn't be so sure on that...

I just recently read through that entire thread before this thread popped up and it would seem that the K24Z's TCT has a different 'body' shape that it does not fit through the little window on the older K20A/Z+K24A's timing chain covers. To swap to the newer TCT's you would need to swap the timer chain cover as well.

tinman5, I recommend OEM replacement from the K20Z3 engine. I have aftermarket camshafts right now with a USED TCT and I do not have any chain slap issues.

I have a spare k20a2 tct with less than 20 miles. I went with a k24a1. My K20a2 had a coolant leak after I did the trans swap. So I gave up.

Why do you recommend the K20Z3 USAF?

It's cheaper than the Acura part equivalent for the Type-S engines.

Funny how that works, just because it says 'Acura' it HAS to cost more, lol.

LOL nice!
Same part I'm assuming? Specs wise, all good?

K20Z3 part:

K20A2/Z1 part:

Same part, $10 difference. I guess you're paying for the 'Acura' name on the baggy the TCT comes in LOL!
