For anyone interested in learning a little bit about what makes a synthetic oil, synthetic, groups, and standards, here are a couple PDF's directly off of American Petroleum Institute (API) which sets the standards of the oils you buy at the auto store.

How to read the API Certification Mark (http://www.api.org/certification-programs/engine-oil-diesel-exhaust-fluid/~/media/Files/Certification/Engine-Oil-Diesel/Publications/MOM_GUIDE_ENGLISH_2013.pdf)
Group X base Stock (http://www.api.org/certification-programs/engine-oil-diesel-exhaust-fluid/~/media/files/certification/engine-oil-diesel/publications/appendix-e-rev-09-01-11.ashx)
Try looking for the API License for the "special" oils you purchase. (http://eolcs.api.org/companyInformation.aspx?id=226450)
From there, you can see if they are meeting today's service (http://eolcs.api.org/licenseAgreementService.aspx?id=995) and ILSAC (http://eolcs.api.org/licenseAgreementCertification.aspx?id=995) standards.
Here is the main search page. (http://eolcs.api.org/)

How Oils are tested based on service and ILSAC standards. (http://www.swri.org/4org/d08/Abstracts/GasEng.pdf)

I'm just using Amsoil as an example since I like to toot my horn about it. Now I'm going to ask my rep why SS oil doesn't have an API stamp, amongst other.
