First start of the car on a cold winter morning, I get a metal noise before the car turns on. It only happens on the first start, after that it's fine. Anybody no what's the problem? I already bought a new battery.

Probably the starter.

Probably the starter, mines been doing this for years - apparently it's a pretty common thing. Is it right after the car turns on?

Correct, common thing? So do I need to change? It started last winter, but only happen twice because it warmed up. This year is brutual in the east coast, real feel negative degrees. I've had it two days in a row and I feel bad for my EP.

Nah IIRC it's a design problem with the starter. You should be fine.

Mine does the same thing on cold mornings. It is the starter gear hanging in the flywheel till it is spun out by the engine speed. The grease on the slip joint gets stiff in the cold and the return spring is not quick enough.

This is good to know. Mine has been doing this for a few months on really cold mornings.

A new starter will fix the problem (what I did), but I have also heard of people regreasing the mechanism. Quite a bit of work.

The sound of that grind does make you cringe though..:nervous:
