I haven't checked in to ephatch in a few months (~six?). The site looks completely different than the last time I was here. In my nearly ten years here, I think this layout is my favorite iteration. Nice work, staff. :thumbu:

I did a quick scan around the "new posts" & saw some names I still recognize. That was nice. I hope everyone's well.

Should anyone care, I'm doing well. I'm turning 30 this year (I was 20 when I joined this site-- time flies), which should mean awesome parties & shit. I'm still driving the same Toyota 4Runner I've had for years & my Lancer Evolution I've had since 2011 (my autocross toy), working for The Man, cooking, & playing soccer as frequently as possible. "The more things change, the more they stay the same."

here are the obligatory car pictures:

I'm often asked, "Data SS? What does that mean?" Heh.

Get another EP!
Nah. Never go back. If I were to get another of any vehicle I've owned, it'd be another 350Z, but like I said.... I enjoyed my EP, but for the things I'm interested in doing, there are cars that I can use that are cheaper/ better. If I bought another hatch Honda, it'd be an AWD Civic Wagon.

I would buy another 4Runner-- the rule doesn't apply to daily drivers as the emotional connection is different.

It's nice to be missed; thanks for saying that. I'm working from home again, so I'll have a little more time to pop in more regularly.

I'm glad you posted that as it reminded me of my drive to my parents' last night.

My wife & I live about six hours away from where I grew up. We were driving to my hometown late last night & on one of the foresty stretches along the freeway, I saw what I'm pretty sure was a cougar or panther or something similar beside the road. As I got closer, it ran into the woods, so I didn't get a great look, but it was definitely feline & definitely big. That may not sound like a big deal, but I've lived in Louisiana my whole life & have never seen a big cat.

There's no point to this story, but you reminded me of it & I wanted to tell people.

By the by, was the bobcat at your house Hasbro?

That's cool to hear you saw one in La. They are cross breeding the Florida cats with the south west cats to build up their population.

Mtn. lions have been spotted on our street but I have not witnessed one in the wild. A couple of years ago one killed a javelina a couple of streets over, dragged it up the street to the side of a house similar to the pic, and jumped on the roof with it in it's jaws. Amazing.

That's pic is of a house up the street. Two female bobcats, probably mother and daughter, cross our yard every day so we are fortunate to see them often. In the summer the mother naps in my greenhouse in the back yard as it is soft and shady. I consider it a privilege to be around them. We have faced each other on our sidewalk, which is a narrow alleyway. I just turn around give her the right of way.

That's all awesome-- I'd probably turn around & cede the right-of-way exactly like you. By the way, I had to look up "javelina" as I'd never heard of them.

I live literally in the middle of my city, so I don't see much wildlife beyond the expected squirrels & occasional raccoon. I have seen a fox on occasion, though. I wish I could hang out with the fox & see what a fox does when it's not running across the street away from my headlights.

I'm interested in your greenhouse, both as a nerd & as one who's finally got the time & place to start a garden. I'd say PM some pictures to me, but this is my thread & I don't mind its content being off the original topic.

Let me see what photos I have. It's a rather unusual set up. The temps and UV here are seriously intense so I dug about 42" into the ground to escape high root temperatures. Filled it in with 24" top quality soil and planted directly into the soil, not pots. Covered with shade cloth the first year and it's now a hoop house.

Here's a pic for starters. All organic soil, made my own organic fertilizer, completely filtered water (15 ppm), etc. Made fertilizer teas with beneficial fungi and bacteria. Amazing results.

This is some of the soil that went in the hole. About $600.00 just in soil.

What do you grow in it? $600 in soil scares me!

Half the reason I'm looking to garden is I want to compost. It feels so wasteful to throw away banana peels, coffee grounds, etc when they could be fertilizing my flowers or veggies.

Haha, it does look that way. I dig the science and have a degree in horticulture and the best growers are, uh, those guys. And the best supplies are at the same places those guys shop. It's legal here so there are a bunch of stores that cater to high end growing. If you want to learn how to grow anything, get on their forums. In Europe, there are phds in microbiology and other fields developing their plants. Amazing info. Store bought supplies are very expensive, though. I bought all of that stuff a couple of years ago when I could swing it. Oh, and if I was growing that plant, I wouldn't be broke!

Good natural soils and composting is the best way to go, and the cheapest. I don't do composting here in the desert but it is really fun. It's an art and a science and you can get really hooked on making it. It's all about what you have to compost and timing. You can actually burn yourself from the biological activity in compost or even kill the process from too much heat (160 degrees plus).

Those sort of work but don't really allow for proper breakdown You said you are in the city, do you have a yard? Enough room for a pile of vegetation? I like a three stage set up where you start with fresh stuff, then move it to the next stage to complete, then to the finished stage. It depends on how much bio matter you can accumulate.

I have a decent-sized yard, about 75'x100' behind my house. I could probably get away with three stage, but I want to save as much space as possible for my two dogs to run around. The compost plus potential garden would really limit the amount of space since I'd be fencing it off to keep the dogs from digging.

Thoughts?
