So who is interested in my other project?

Its 4 doors, Inline 6 engine, rear wheel drive, 4 wheel independent suspension and disc brakes and has electric everything......

Nissans are fun.

This project goes pretty far currently, and later involves turbos....

Anyone wanna see more?

It is a 1984 Nissan Maxima. Or in other countries it was sold as a Nissan Bluebird 910.

It comes with a 2.4 liter inline 6 engine, same type as a Datsun Z, (L series)

I am fully restoring the interior, then dropping an L28ET turbo engine, Borg Warner T5 trans, stand alone EFI, ect ect. Heres some project porn.

pic when I brought her home.

When I got the car the interior was quite ragged. Never really well taken care of by the PO or anything, had the wrong console in it, cracked everything, just gross in general. The sunroof didnt work at all, and the headliner was gross too. I have a 1 year old, and its Arizona, that means I need AC in me family sedan, and the ventilation system has to be clean and not full of god only knows what. So the interior tear down began, I tore out literally everything.

Very cool, I love classic cars. I feel as if all the innovation and creativity from the Japanese manufacturers has been left behind in the Golden Age of the 80's and early 90's. Now everything is safety and boring, nothing they produce now is as exciting as what they used to roll off of the assembly line.

BTW, does that engine have the intake and exhaust ports on the same side of the head?

I completely agree with you.

And yes it does, lolol, this design seems so ancient when I am reminded of that, haha. But they are still extremely capable engines. The motor I have sitting there will handle a reliable daily driver 300-350hp, and pretty damn similar torque, on a fairly normal sized turbo.

If you guys are into this, then stay tuned for some badass updates, I really put my skills to the test on this one.

What's that car weigh? 350 hp and real wheel drive..... nice.

I imagine there are crossflow heads available for a chunk of gold. I put one on an MGA motor and it transformed it. Eventually got it up to about 175whp, which was great as the car (not an MGA) weighed around 1400.

My brother had a Toyota wagon, 1980?, with a six and it was surprisingly fast. All stock but a real sleeper.

According to the documentation they are about 2745lb stock wth the manual trans. Which makes it almost the same weight as an EP3, hahaha.

Crossflow heads sort of exist, well they do exist actually, O.S. Giken is the worlds leading expert in this engine, they currently offer a package that turns the L series block into a 3.1 liter race engine. Crossflow heads, custom crank, pistons rods, ect ect. It puts out 420 HP, Naturally aspirated, and revs to over 9000 RPM. Cost: 45,000

One guy cut apart 3 KA24DE heads and dowel pinned them together in front, middle and rear halfs, then had custom cams made, the project is on Youtube. search L31DETT

Then there are the people that throw an RB25 head on it, that requires a lot of modification as well, but the bores and bolt holes line up identically, however the cooling passages do not, and the cams on RB are belt and not chain like the L series, so you have to make workarounds to run it.

I have the best flowing two cylinder heads available for this engine, the P90, and the MN47, both flow very very well for single sided interrupted flow.

I also like the vintage look of the L series and it has history. Its a true skyline engine. While Toyota was messing with DOHC, Nissan was perfecting DOHC and making this engine, which easily put out as much power as Toyotas DOHC I6 with its crossflow design. These motors put out stupid torque, even in NA form.

cleaned all the ducts, and the boxes, muultiple dishwasher and hand scrub runs
New heater core from 1997 Nissan pickup
New heater core lines (cabin side of firewall)
New sealing foam

When I got the car, the sunroof didnt work, you could hear the motor but it wasnt moving anything. It also had some minor rust, which I later found it had destroyed the sliding panel. the body rust was incredibly minimal, and only around this area of the car, so I had to strip everything and repaint the area and remove all the rust immediately, and find a new sliding lid

In these cars the headliner is an integral part, and by that I mean, once it comes down, its a hell of a thing to get back up, and it usually will be damaged in removing it. It isnt a simple drop out panel like in EP3 and most newer cars, there are rods that hold the fabric up and it is glued to the body. Another kicker is that it wraps around the rear window seal lip, so it has to be installed before the rear window. Which all ends up working out because removing the sunroof tub looked to be royal bitch if you went out any direction but out the back window. But in other words, after the sunroof tub, your headliner is the first thing to actually go back in the car, so it better be right.

this finisherpanel realistically needs to be installed before the tub goes in, even though the manual says otherwise

this is a very cool pic. it shows the corner drain after all paint/primer is stripped. This is done the very old fashioned way. Each tub has 4 of these and they have to be brazed in by a skilled technician, and kept at the lowest point and be leak free. A skilled Japanese guy at Nissan's Oppama plant, who is probably very old now, had to do this job. To me that is pretty cool, of course not any less cool if it was done anywhere else, just saying, things are not done like this anymore.

then I installed the roof. I found a good one in the junkyard and bondoed the tiny imperfections, and repainted it.

Newly cut foamz dawg!

And I started gluing the headliner in, lots of file clips are required to do this properly, essentially enough to have the entire car clipped at the edges where you see them with about 1/16 of an inch between them.

Then after a day or so of drying we installed all the edge trim, starting with the sunroof. Then we pulled the finisher plate forward to see the outcome

And this occurred

I fit all this carpet by myself, it was a pain in the ass.

and installed all the ducts and the control box for the HVAC system.

Intsalled new rear sound deadening and pads. that wheel arch sound deadening is what is under the carpet as well, its really great stuff.

Here are the new door panels, you can see some of the dash going together in this pic too.

And here is the dash fully assembled, sans steering wheel and center console, which I am waiting for to be shipped to me.

This is going in today probably, I just insured the car last night, and am getting it temporarily registered to take it to emissions.

I have been messing with the stand alone ECU that I am putting in the car after I emissions it. It is a Megasquirt I, If you ever have to use a standalone on a non OBD2 car, I recommend these, easy to use and easy to set up.
