Hello,
I'm Brandon and i recently found out what all the fuss was about. First off I have never been a fan of honda products, say for the del sol (mainly because I had a good friend of mine in my old neighborhood that had his V-tec delsol that was featured in import magazine and was modded to the hills and could eat about anything on the road!) and the S-2000 (when all I ever thought could be fun only came in rwd). From there I began my long exhausting search for a vehicle that went well with my personality and my budget. I went through two cars one was a Tacoma and the other a mazda6. Once the basically new mazda6 shot up to a ridiculous amount of insurance money, I had two options.. Eat water or sell that bi**h and get myself a new ride that would fit the budget. I looked at miatas, trans am's, G8's, wrx's, mustangs, infinitis... The list goes on and on. Eventually I found a 2002 honda civic si, with 69,892 miles on the clock and the original owner! I always wanted a hatchback and a manual car (yes this is my first manual, since my family believed i was seriously incapable of owning one..) I instantly loved the shape of it and that shifter was something else! That thing just had something peculiar about it, so I did my homework and discovered that this was almost the type r that was exclusively released to European and Asian markets, (minus the exciting styling and the Hp!) plus it was one of the only civic to have independent rear suspension, onto of that it was a honda so it would have excellent reliability and be easy on my budget!

So I started to talk to the fellow and eventually picked her up for $6500. Instantly I fell in love with the seats, the driving dynamics, and gear box (except for the occasional 3rd gear grinds..). Plus she packs an arsenal of after market part availability, styling options, and most of all tuning and performance potential. However, now I'm at a cross road of what to start doing.

My budget is decent but I want the best bang for my buck, and I have a good friend who is a master honda technician. So I have to raise the question of what I can get away with in the socialist Nazi state of California. Feedback is very much appreciated and I would like to thank you for taking the time to read all of my crap!

Welcome to the honda community. Much like you- I never favored Hondas in the past. I wanted a big truck with an even bigger power plant. But my first car was my first love in the end- I've owned my 03 hatch since birth 12ish years ago. 3 motors, 2 transmissions, 2 superchargers, 4 suspensions, etc. later, I still can't imagine another car sitting in my garage.
As far as your budget- all I can say is think about what you really want from the car- your final vision. Then put your budget together and how your going to get there. If your realistic you should have no problem getting there. This is the same guidance that I share to everyone that's getting into the game.
In the end- it's a passion that you just have to roll with. Enjoy it- the good, the bad, everything. If your not breaking things and progressing then your not doing it right. Check out my build some time if you like- might give you a better idea of what im talking about... Or not- it's a personal thing- you'll see [emoji16]

Thanks different! I certainly want a car that's a daily of now. But the ultimate goal would be turning her into a weekend track car, but still streetable and still reliable. My only issue I keep running into is being smog compliant in California, and from what I hear it's impossible to hit 200hp on the stock block without being illegal .Then I would have to swap to a k20a2 and or a k24 and I would have to bar the car and certify that the engine won't fall out of it on the road ,problem with that is I would need to buy a temporary car for the swap to be passed by the bar association.
