Purchased a TW 2004 w/ 70k and hail damage for 4K. Has a washed title, but I guess that's better than a salvage title. Carfax doesn't have many records. What's the best way to know if the mileage is accurate?

hard to say i'd just follow what the odometer says

Is it true that the odometer isn't paired to the ecu?

its partly true. the odometer is read from the vss sensor which sends the signal to the ecu which then is sent to your odometer which reads the miles.. so if someone really wanted to conserve miles and lie about having an ep thats barely driven they would just have to unplug their vss sensor.. and it'll stop reading the miles

Good to know. I see a lot of people swap clusters. Does the car's mileage switch over to the new cluster?

Make sure that you read and understand the issues that come with a swapped cluster. There are potential lighting issues, loss of your dimmer, and such. I decided it wasn't worth it once I knew the pros and cons.

Direct swap. Mileage is recorded and stored with the cluster.

IIRC only time you lose dimmer option is with a ep3r cluster swap. You only need to ground 1 wire for the ep3 cluster and it's not difficult to make it reversible.
