Is one horsepower equal to the power of one horse? Or is that just a myth? And if its true then why did they make it like that?

in simple terms, one horsepower is equivalent to the amount of weight that is lifted one foot in one second. If my memory serves me correctly that sentence is correct. But i could be mistaken, it's been a long time since i had to try to explain this to anyone.
