Here's a pic so you get the idea. The light on the bottom is oem from a 5 series BMW.

I wouldn't get anything higer than 5K. The higher the K, the more purple the light. Also the higher the K, the less light you'll get.

i've been lookin up some H4 HID conversions too
some good brands to look at:
Hella
G-garage (formerly mcchullan (sp?) or some shit)
Phillips (autolamps.com)
SuperVision (found on ebay... but friend of mine had good results with them)

5000k or 5100k whatever is listed is the brightest avaiable. It is also the whitest. output is about 3200 luminens (whatever the f*** that means...)
6000k (or similar) is white/blue... rated at ~3000 luminens (again.. no idea.. but just for comparison)
7000k is more of a purplish look.. rated at ~2800 luminens

no car company i know of uses the 5000k (or similar) HID temperature simply because it is really bright... I remember reading somewhere that someone uses the 7000k temp as their OEM hids.. but forgot which car make... other than that 6000k is the most popular and widely used... pretty sure audi and bmw use them..

BTW: that 5 series in the pic above isnt equip with OEM HIDS, they're comparing their simulated "HID" bulbs..

Here's the page where I got the pic from
http://www.mccullochhid.com/index2.htm
The description describes it as being "Factory 4300K D2S"

I believe that's a factory hid, but then it should be 4100K instead of 4300K. I think they mislabeled it.

Anyway, all oem hid bulbs are rated 4100K.

I saw some ad for an hid kit that was 12000k. Anybody see what kinda color that hot of a bulb gives off?
