Turns out powder coating aluminum wheels may be detrimental after all.
"... the heat range and duration of the powdercoating process overlaps with the heat treating and aging of 6061-T6 aluminum." 949 Racing will void the warranty on powder coated wheels.

Interesting info. This topic has been argued for many years. I personally think it is more of a liability concern for wheel makers. From what I've read, BBS and others use powder coat primer and clear coats. Personally I've got about 3 years on my RSX blades with no problems and many stress load/ heat cycles. With that said- these RSX wheels were $10. each. I would certainly think twice about powder coating high end exotic wheels.

Stock Honda wheels are alloy which is stronger than just aluminum..Quote:

not saying that there isnt some risk, but I havent ever seen it, or heard of it, and every time I go to the powder coater, theres a crap load of fresh rims waiting to be picked up.
interestingly it seems that the majority of good powdercoaters will bake at a lower temperature so as not to overlap the aging process, also, with non forged rims or thick stock rims, it shouldnt matter, at least thats what my limited research is saying.

I was rather surprised upon hearing it. This is specifically for 6061-T6 aluminum wheels. Maybe 949 Racing intentionally had them overheated to suggest that some treatments were not applied correctly? Dunno.
