I have a nomad zen 20gig portable. I just hooked up a cable with a headphone jack on one end and two male RCA connectors on the other end to the Aux inputs on my deck (JVC). Then ran the cable through the unused blank hole next to the shifter. The setup works pretty well.
...i have my ipod hooked up to my stock headunit and i love it...

Have an older Creative Nomad 20gb Jukebox hooked into my Eclipse headunit. It hooks in via a 1/4" headphone jack. But that is just Eclipses way of doing it. I love it, but since I have gotten Satellite radio (Sirius) I don't listen to CDs or MP3s like I used to.
-=speck=-
you just gotta look at the head unit your going to buy. Make sure it has a line in for the ipod. Get a cable that can plug into the ipod and has the connectors for the head unit and run it through the dash
how did you hook it up to your stock head unit?
im glad u asked, :winkm:.Quote:

ever hear of an auxillary input converter? itz so awesome, itz this thing that plugs into ur stock headunit where the CD changer from honda WOULD go, and out of it 2 RCAs come out, i have those 2 RCAs connected to a RCA to headfonejack plug and that plug goin into my iPod (or laptop, or CD player, or ANYTHING... :smilem: )
coolest thing EVER, workz AWESOME.
This website ( http://shop.store.yahoo.com/logjam/index.html ) has two of them, one made by P.I.E. for 49.95 + shipping, and one made by Blitzsafe for 69.95 + shipping...
i bought the P.I.E. one-- i think the part number is: HONAUX. simple install, great quality piece.

PS-lemme know if u want to know or see anything else...
Yeah I wanna do this too. I used to have a lptop setup in my old jeep like this and plan on doing it with the IPod just don't feel like spending $400 on one

wow good info i didnt even notice you did it with the stock unit at first and I have never heard of that before. Now I kinda wish i wouldnt have bought a new cd player :( Oh well I will love my new deck and just have to save and hopefully find a cheap IPod
I just tried this tonight. I have a Pioneer deck with an aux input on the back, so I got a cord at Radio Shack that has two RCA connectors on one end, and a headphone jack on the other. I hooked up the iPod, but when I click "source" on the deck it only switches between Radio and CD :( .Quote:

Any suggestions?
you should have an aux selection on your head unit as well. Whats the point of RCA's if you cant switch to em.
that is too dope. show us pics.
Well, what I thought was an input was actually an RCA pre-out. My deck has 3 RCA pre-outs, actually. This is it if you want to take a look:Quote:

It has IP-Bus system control for connecting CD changers, so do you think there's a way I could use that connection?
You could rig up a FM transmitter, and tune to a blank radio station when you want to listen to your MP3 player, or change out your deck, if you got the cash and wanna upgrade.
uhm, those FM transmitters are good if you dont want wires. but you sacrifice the quality. It wass sound bad and you sometimes dont get a signal, at least thats what i hear about those things. never would get one. Rather connect it straight to the headunit. =)
As for now, no head unit for me. I asked my dad, who used to instal stereos and stuff, about using the stock cd player to use. And he said it was alright. All i have to do is get the converter that will have RCA outputs, a amp for the new speakers i will be buying. Use the amp and jl sub i have in my closet and a nice stereo system with the use of the ipod. My system will look stock so no one shuold want to steal that thing. heh heh.

Everyone with a Pioneer head unit, this is what you need!!!

It took me some time to figure it out, but when you get this cable, it's a snap. You connect it to the back where the changer would plug in (IP-Bus). Then connect a cable with two RCA jacks on one end and a headphone mini-plug on the other to your iPod.
IMPORTANT: Make sure AUX is turned on on your head unit by pressing "function" with the head unit off. It took me two days to figure this out
I found this, and I think you guys will be really interested:

Since Alpine makes the factory headunit (and I'm a cheapskate )- anyone know if one of these less expensive aux cables could be used?
Alpine KCA-121B $15

The factory radio does not have that type of plug, so it will not work. The only way to add aux in on stock head unit is to buy either the Blitzsafe or PIE adapter.
yup... it uses a clip (or harness...thing...)Quote:

i forgot this was a mod... i got so used to it...

Quick question -- how do you select the auxiliary input as a source?Quote:

I'll either go with one of those or with Denison's ICELink. I'd really like the track up/down function that the ICELink allows, but not sure whether it's worth an extra $150. I'd also like the Alpine iPod system due this summer, especially since you'd be able to browse the menu system from the head itself.
Don't bother with FM transmitters.
FM modulators may work well enough when you consider that the frequency range of compressed audio isn't much different from the best FM reception.
You simply hit the cd/changer button, the deck toggles between the cd changer(now aux in) and cd player. The display reads Disc:1 track:99 if I remember correctly.Quote:

I'M SO HAPPY... lol
I got my PIE adapter today, and hooked it up to the stock head. I plugged into the headphone output of my iPod, and it sounded okay. But, there was this "bzz.. bzz.." noise that just got annoying. So, I decided to get some more stuff at the Apple store.
I got a Belkin auto adapter and TuneDock, and plugged the same patch cable into the power adapter's line level output.
BINGO :D :D :D
Good sound, plenty loud enough for quiet stuff, and the Belkin's volume dial is good for making things reasonable. It's a tad noisy, but a ground loop isolator will probably help. At the moment, the audio coming from the Belkin adapter can be turned up loud enough to pretty much negate any noise problems.
No more annoying rhythmic buzzing, either, because the power adapter serves as a ground for the iPod. Without the adapter, and without using the PIE's blue ground wire, there wasn't a proper ground, and the buzzing was the resulting symptom.
I also got a Monster Cable miniplug-to-RCA cable, and in the car, it was noisier than an extra cable that also had a noise-reducing magnet. I was planning on using it at home anyway, but the extra noise surprised me.
The cable in the car also has a 90-degree miniplug, which is great for the tight space around the power adapter.
TEN DAYS of music in my car -- finally!
most hed units either have a soft aux in like some sonys
ot you have to use a cbr10 i think on pioneers or cbr20
converts ip bus to rca inputs
kenwoods have i think 5 wire to rca inputs
same for alpine
some jvcs have a mp3 input on the front of the unit mini phono jack
if its a honda
use a blitz safe adapter
most foriegn cars you can get a blitzsafe cable for
as long as the radio is changer capable
hoped this helped
:smilem: cool, now therez two of us (or three? does surprise have it?)Quote:

weird tho, i get the "Bzz... Bzz..." sound only when the iPod is UNPLUGGED... meh... w/e workz...
:winkm:

Yeah, that intermittent buzzing is probably coming from the lack of a ground connection. It won't matter whether the plug is connected to the iPod (without power adapter) or just hanging free. As long as a ground is somehow not being made, then it'll do that noise.
I'm going to pick up a ground loop isolator at some point, and reroute the audio cables through the inside part of the center console. For now, I just pushed them under the edge back to the cupholder area, and the miniplug end comes up for the connection.
I was wondering if you guys got the P.I.E Hon-Aux or P.I.E Hon98-Aux,
thanks!
:D Alpine is releasing a cable in September that will let you "Control" an Ipod with anyy 2004 and future Alpine revievers.
Not a cable, but a control box that rides on the Ai-Net data bus. Target price (if you can snag one!) is going to be $100. I hope to try one at a store to see how slick they really are.Quote:

I got mine before they split the adapter into two types. Judging from what they list now at Logjam Electronics, the HON98 version is the one to use on our EPs.

My PIE adapter, as I said, has a blue ground wire. If I'm going to use an audio device that's running on its own battery power, I should connect that blue ground. If I use an audio device that's running off of a 12V power adapter, I should NOT connect the PIE's ground, because the 12V adapter serves as a ground. Two ground connections will cause a loop, and therefore add noise.
My setup has the PIE adapter with an unconnected blue wire, the iPod running through the Belkin auto adapter, and a minijack-to-RCA cable.
So...
I thought that the little bit of noise while playing the iPod -- usually not noticeable, actually -- would be cleaned up by adding a ground loop isolator. I bought one at Radio Shack, inserted it between the Belkin's line out and the PIE adapter, and was quite shocked at the buzzing & intermittent audio signal. It simply wasn't the proper solution, and the problem probably isn't due to improper grounding anyway.
ANYWAY --
Maybe the Blitzsafe adapter sounds cleaner, but I don't know. For now, until the Alpine unit hits the streets, this is the best setup to use with the stock head unit. I did try the Monster Cable minijack-to-RCA cable, but as I posted earlier, it turned out to be noisy as hell (sounds fine in my home theater, however). I'd suggest a cable with a clip-on magnet noise filter, which in my case came with my Canon digital camera to use for analog output.
you need to have a Mac for the ipod right
Nope -- they've had iPod for Windows for maybe almost two years now.Quote:

no you can use a mac or pc with an ipod.
Yeah, my mistake, I should've said that you could use an iPod with both Mac and Windows. There aren't two different versions like I nearly said above.
There are things you can do with an iPod besides play music -- keep a contacts list, calendar, text notes, store images, etc etc. I've got my entire iBook backed up on my iPod (I can even boot off of it, too).
http://www.apple.com/ipod/behindthewheel.html
my concern with this is that if you use an ipod connector that bad boy will always be charging and messing up that battery of the ipod over time... i can say that my D-LO wireless transmitter has treated me well with my ipod nano but i know for a fact that the dang ipod just does not hold its charge very well anymore as a result of it...
i would prolly say if you can get an ipod connector AND aux...so you can just run the ipod through aux and when you need to recharge the connector is readily available... i mean if that wont fit back there you could always just get aux and buy a ipod charger they're really cheap if you look around
Most of the new mid range price head units $100-250 have built in ipod control that plug into the bottom of your ipod. This way instead of painstakingly looking at small words while holding your ipod (or pluged into an FM modulator) to change songs you just use the head unit. This means you can stash your ipod in the glove box or center console (with some slight fabrication), that way a theif can't tell in plain view if theres somthing worth $$ in the car.
ALSO, more awesome than an iBreak, some of the headunits come with usb inputs, so stealth latop hardrive +usb cable= major tunage. ok im done.
