To start I have NOT done this but I have seen a few pictures on EPhatch that have been done.

I would guess take the wheels off the car and I would guess it would be best to take the tires off also but not necessary.
I would buff off or sand off the clear finish on the stock wheels
and clean them with a paint thinner after the sanding.
I would pick a FLAT black finish as opposed to a Gloss black finish
but that is just my oponion. I hope this helps...

Here's the LINK that someone posted a long long time ago. If your car is black, I think a gloss black looks better than a flat black.
This is mine but done with powdercoating. I think using spray paint would be cheaper and easier to repair if you chip it.

yeah, my rig is black and i was thinking that a gloss would look good. i still dont know if im gonna use a clear coat. i probably wont since i might have to touch them up every once in a while.

they were glossy when i first got them powdercoated. Now there seems to be some stuff on it that I can't seem to get rid of that are making them look flat black. Maybe i need to buy some rim cleaner.
Out of 4 rims only 1 stayed in good condition. Other ones are cracking and chipping. That's why I recommend spray paint.

a good powder coating place should be able to acid dip or media blast the wheel before powder coating AND clearcoating. if you chose to paint get some fine scotch brite pads and scuff the finish dull. then go to a paint supply store and get primer and paint and just follow instructions. some paint places can custom mix paints in cans so that you dont have to own a compressor and paint gun etc.. to do this, also just before you paint CLEAN the wheel exeptionally well you can get cleaner at the paint supply. good luck.

I have painted two sets of stock wheels. Came out great both times: Rough the hell out of the surface with fairly rough sandpaper for 15 or 20 minutes. Do light coats over and over, cycling between wheels to give each some time to dry. I used high-temp paint for engines. Then I did a coat of clear coat designed for wheels. All this stuff was like $25 at Advance auto.

They have been gold, which looks awesome on nhbp, and obnoxious green. Take your time with prepping and painting lightly in long strokes and it looks awesome for very cheap.
