JDM knob w/stock shift boot
EDIT: Accomplished, see my post @ bottom of page for pics.
Heres the deal...
I bought a new shift knob at a local dealer. (type-r style) And it came w/nut. Dude at the counter says it'll work fine w/USDM boot, you pull the boot off, put the nut on the thing, put the boot back on, and tight the knob against the nut/top of boot, so it holds the top of the boot there. Sounds legit to me, even though everyone here seems to claim you need jdm boot for this???
Anyway my problem is that I can't get the boot piece of the console off. I already checked out the tutorial on k-series (http://www.k-series.com/tech_detail....=EP_HU_INSTALL)
I can pull the bottom out fine by sticking my fingers into the boot... but from there the piece won't budge. The rest of it won't move at ALL. Is there something I am missing??? please help!! :o Thanks

reach into the boot again from the 10 and 2 oclock positions with both hands and give it a good yank straight out after that, unplug the hazard button and unscrew the shifter boot bezel, remember how the bezel and boot go together and the insall new boot and reverse procedure when install back.
Ok so now pulling at 10 and 2 it comes mostly out, but the top corners are still not moving. Do I just pull this really hard or what? I'm afraid to break something, the plastic is bending an awful lot when I pull.
Run your fingers up the side (I find the drivers side was easier to get out first) and try and get the top clip out. Once one side is out the you can get your hand underneath and pop out the other side. DO NOT JUST YANK, you will break the corners. I'll try and find pics I had posted before.

Too late, I yanked. But luckily for me it came out and did not break. Those corner clips suck. I'm trying to find a washer right now cause the nut isn't quite big enough for the boot to fit against. I'll let you know how it turns out, maybe it will save a lot of people from buying jdm boots if this works fine!!
Ok I needed to use 2 washers to hold the boot up in addition to the supplied nut. So the overall effect of this is that the knob is kind of high up. It is noticeably higher than the oem knob, but there is no gap sice the shift boot is clamped right against it. And perhaps more importantly I didn't need to spend $50 for a JDM boot.
I will try to go get a couple pictures and post them, I don't know where my digi cam is at the moment.

Tenzo Type-R knob ($15), 2 miscellaneous washers, stock boot. It sits a little higher than the stock knob because of the nut and the 2 washers, but its not horrible, and it doesn't look all that bad. What do you think? Is it good enough to save us all from having to spend $50 on a JDM boot? Maybe I could make another thread w/a name like "DON'T BUY THE JDM BOOT!!!" and post pictures and see what people think... gimme some feedback, thanks. :smilem:

Yah I put the stock knob back on, it just wasn't doin it for me. It's a small knob and w/the boot right up to it like that I found myself grabbing rubber more often than not. Oh well.

I think maybe an inch higher than stock... yah it definitely feels longer. I put the stock knob back on. :sadm:
