I used to use Plus, but with the ridiculous gas prices now, I have resorted to Regular.

I put 89 in the EP from the time I bought the car in 05 until about 3 months ago when I switched to 87 exclusively for the EP.

Always used premium in all of my cars for as long as I can remember...maybe I'm wasting $$, but at approx. 20 cents more per gallon, 15k miles a year, 30mpg average...it works out to around $100/year, or like $8/month.
About the same $ as eating fast food once a month, which I hardly ever do...

    Question

I've heard it said on other car forums that using a higher octane gasoline can speed carbon formation in the motor. Anyone have any experience with this?

Here in germany we have the K20A3 engine in some 5 door civic, it has got in here the same power as you have it in your Ep3.

Gasoline stations here have got 91 octane, 95 octane and premium gas with 98 octanes.

Honda sys for gasoline: use 95 octane gasoline, 98 octane gasoline will not decrease or increase your engine power, gasoline which has lower octane could also used for "getting home", but engine would have full power and needs more gas...

I use plus because the owners manual states that 87 and higher is ideal for this car. I have tested many different gas types in my area and can now only put Shell's 87 gas in my EP. She's a picky gal.

The only time anything other than 87 has touched the nips of my injectors is during track days. Simply because by both tracks that I frequent only the Premium is non-Ethanol blend. The 87 and 89 are both E10.

Anyone who isn't running a FI setup or doesn't have a ECU flash specific for Premium and is running anything other than 87 is just wasting money. From the factory, your car is tuned, ready and wanting of 85-87 octane. It runs worse and gets less milage on higher octane fuel.
