The higher the number the harder the rubber and longer it will last. Most performance tires are rated at 300 or less.
Need info on treadwear?
420 Treadwear.
Is it the lower the # the better or is it worse?

420 is a little high (35,xxx-40,xxx miles) if you're going for grip and daily driving go 250-300, any lower they will wear quick
example. Kumho 712's tread 280, I got 22,xxx miles out of them and I drove pretty hard and didn't have a camber kit
420 is high for a performance tire, mebe not for like an all season tire.
There is only one long-life all-season tire I've ever heard good reviews of... Dunlop SP sport A2's ... they last forever, and have the best traction rating for thier treadlife.
The deal with tires is, the lower the number, the grippier they will be... but you have to look hard to find the ones that are cheap enough to justify the short life.
And that is precisely why Falken Azenis Sport RT (200treadwear) are the most popular ultra-high performance "summer" tire, and Yoko AV-ES100s are the most populare all-season ultra-high performance tires (280treadwear)
Azenis will last around 10-15K miles at ~$40 each for 15's.
They are CHEAPER than all the others with thier specs!
Note: an alignment will cost less than replacing a set of tires, and it will prolong the life of your tires.

Treadwear
The treadwear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear of a tire when tested carefully under controlled conditions. For example, a tire graded 400 should have its useful tread last twice as long as a tire graded 200. Another tire manufacturer, however, may grade a comparable design 300, so a grade of 150 would last half as long under their grading scheme. The lesson learned is to not use one manufacturer's grade versus the other, but instead to compare tire grades within a given brand.Actual treadwear performance can vary tremendously according to the tire's real-world use: variations in driving habits, service practices (most importantly air pressure maintenance) and road conditions and climate affect tire life.

Yoko AVS ES100s are summer tires too. I put my set on for summer and two days later it snowed and you can barely stay on the road. Plus, they have a directional and smooth tread. CLICKYOriginally posted by BlasTech

The stock Michelin's have a 300 treadware, but they have a normal nobbier tread.
Here's a good article on the UTQG ratings:

yep, 205/50/15 are the only 15" azenis rs size... and they are great for the money, but smallish.
EP3inRI, I'll take your word on the Yokes not being good for snow... I havent seen snow in something like uhhh, 7 years?
I run the 205/50/15s on the street as a daily driver and they work just fine. Sure I'll have to get a set every year but they're SO grippy. :DOriginally posted by nozomi

A few people on Club Si have them and have given great reviews for them as well...
