I use scotch-brite pads for paint prep. works better than sand paper. also you can get the outside tire bead broken back for about $10 for all 4 wheels. that way you can get a better masking to protect the tires and have the paint go all the way around the rim lip. when you go to re-seat the bead, get a cloth and dip it in soapy water. rub that around the wheel and inflate. the bead will pop back on and you will have a professional looking paint job. ;)

I would suggest either powdercoating them or leaving them alone...unless you aren't going to paint the rim of the wheel. Once you paint the rim of the wheel, regardless of how much prep work you do, regular paint will just chip off. Especially when it comes time to get new tires mounted, it will chip off and will look like crap.

it doesnt have to be the wheel coating. i did mine with it n it turned out pretty well but my friend did his with just the high temp engine enamel n i must say it looks better than the wheel coating on mine. i now have 2 cans of semi-gloss engine enamel waiting to re-do them for winter rims

I painted mine black, then white, then gunmetal.

Stick index cards in the little gap between the tire and the wheel so you don't get any paint on the tire.

Putting a duplicolor clear coat will give it a glossy finish.

It does chip off kind of easily. I no longer use these wheels, they were a temporary thing.
