which tires is better for 17X7.5 ? 215/45ZR17 or 205/40ZR17

Between those two sizes, I'd go with the 215/45's, although acceleration might be a tad slower than with the 205/40's.

205/40 is pretty small, though, and would be more than 3% off from stock (assuming 02-03's 195/60-15 wheels as stock).

I've got 205-width tires on my 7" wheels, and they seem fine. So, with a bit of extra width on yours, 215 should work well.

Go with the 45 series. Ride quality will be better, less chance of pounding a rim and the performance difference won't be that great.
